It was already the 30th day when my husband came back from God knows where. Not that I was curious. I had already made a decision to divorce and continue to write novels after getting immense motivation from Vampire.
When I thought about how we had spent a few days at the beach, I couldn’t help but feel giddy at the thought.
This was the exact scene that my husband saw. I was looking at the computer, giggling out of the blue. There was a warm smile on my face that could make anyone’s heartbeat faster. My husband paused for a while before ignoring me completely.
He treated me like air, but I didn’t care. At this moment, I was fully immersed in Vampire to think about where and why my husband was gone. But I didn’t even have to think about it. Lewis soon walked over and tapped gently on the table.
I didn’t look up since my mood went down again when I saw Lewis approaching me like this. I squinted my eyes and gave him a cold shoulder. Then I heard a frustrated sigh. “I just wanted to say that I instantly went out to the business meeting in another city after dinner time that day. Forgot to tell you.”
Did he mean that day when he had suddenly shut himself in his study room? I tilted my head and when I thought about it, I realized that perhaps that day my husband wasn’t even at home. Wasn’t it why he hadn’t eaten his food that night that I had kept in the refrigerator?
I slowly glanced up and averted my eyes to read through the Chapter I was writing.
I didn’t even want to think about my husband at all!
When Lewis saw how I ignored him, his frustration grew even worse. He left the area and didn’t come before my eyes anymore.
But the entire time, I was feeling uncomfortable. The relationship between me and my husband had turned colder. Even I felt like we were strangers who had been living together as paying guests rather than husband and wife.
Wouldn’t it be better to just take a divorce than to depend on my husband at this time? He always looked at me with his cold sharp eyes that would pierce my body and go straight to my soul. I hated the feeling of being seen through. It made me feel that I was rather sitting naked before Lewis.
My determination to be separated from my husband became stronger, and I instantly picked up the phone, calling a lawyer. I went outside to the balcony and talked.
“I want to get a divorce.” And after this, I explained my situation.
The lawyer was silent for a long time and said, “Your reason is strong, but the case isn’t. Your plea might even get rejected. So you should at least provide me with actual evidence of why you want to get a divorce.”
“But, I really don’t love him anymore. Isn’t that a good reason?” I was frustrated by his words.
“Mrs. Elise, let me speak bluntly. Many couples face this problem, but not every single one of them gets a divorce. If the case isn’t strong, you will have to fill the penalty. And if they find that ‘love’ is the only problem, then the court will allot you a marriage counsellor.”
I pursed my lips, thinking deep about my situation. After contemplating, I said, “Then I’ll file a rape case. He had raped me against my will.”
“Now that’s a good reason, but do you have any evidence?”
I thought hard and said, “No. That’s why I wasn’t telling you about it.”
The lawyer was silent again and then he said, “Can I ask you something if you don’t mind?”
“Sure.”
“Why did you say he raped you?”
“Actually, we had not been talking to each other for over a year, and suddenly, he got drunk that day and raped me. He hadn’t even touched me or glanced at me for a year! How could he do this to me?”
“Ma’am, can you write this in a file?” The lawyer’s voice suddenly sounded excited. “The case where husbands ignore wives was considered in the past. Maybe you’ll get divorce. So do one thing. Write all of these things you just told me and I’ll send you a form. Get your husband to do a signature on it, and send it to me immediately.”
I instantly got excited and hung up the phone. After this, I got busy writing my novel inna good mood. I even replied to Vampire happily with a lot of emojis. Even he could tell that my mood had suddenly improved and asked what had happened.
Just as I was about to text him about divorce, I received an email from the Lawyer. He finally sent the document! I instantly printed it out and rushed towards my husband’s study room.
He was on the call when I entered the room. His cold glance made me frozen at the door for a moment before I walked over and placed the divorce files before him. I had already signed it before entering the room.
“What is this?” He asked, frowning.
I suddenly felt nervous, but it was my decision to get a divorce. So I had to be strong for me and Vampire! “I want to ge a divorce.”
My husband’s face remained expressionless for a long time as he kept glancing at the papers placed before his eyes. It even felt like he had somehow become a statue out of the blue.
After a long time, he picked up the file and read the entire thing, even the reasons mentioned in the second page. His eyes squinted for a moment, but he still didn’t say anything.
My anxiety grew even more. So I blabbered. “Well, you see, we don’t love each other anymore. I know that already. Our relationship has already turned into something bitter, and I’m exhausted. I really don’t want to do this anymore. I’ve tried fixing it, but you don’t listen to me! Who would be able to keep himself from touching his wife for a year? Huh? What do you have to say about that?!” My breath was fast as I stared at him with reddened eyes. “I even suspect that you’re perhaps having an affair with someone. Otherwise why would you treat me like this? I-”
Then he suddenly let out a dark chuckle. “You say, I don’t touch you, then tell me, who was the person who tried to give you jewelry and kiss you that day? Who was the one who would prepare food every single day without fail when you were busy writing? And who was the one taking care of you when you were sick two months ago?!” He glared at me as his grip tightened, making the corner of the paper crumble. “You want me to go on?”
“I… It’s not…” I didn’t know what to say anymore. But I also had something to refute his words. I glared at Lewis and said, “And who was the person to rape me that day?! Did you think I forgot about it?”
“I was drunk, Elise!” He took several breaths and glanced at the paper as his eyes turned icy. “It’s because of your editor, isn’t it?”
I froze, and pursed my lips. I suddenly felt like I should just tell him everything truthfully. After all, we were getting s divorce, and he should know that there was someone out there who cared for me, loved me more than he ever did! So I nodded. “Yes, it is him!”
Lewis’s eyes dulled as he glanced at the paper and threw it on the table. After that, he grabbed the coat behind his chair and left the study room. In a while, I even heard the voice of the front door slamming.
