CHAPTER 18 HENRY’S BIRTHDAY

Book:My Sassy Boss Published:2024-5-1

Sunny’s POV
Here I am again, standing awkwardly in the middle of the crowd while holding a glass of champagne in my hand which I kept on drinking whenever someone passes my way. Oh God, if it isn’t my first love’s birthday I would probably think even of the most awkward excuses I could say just for me not to be able to attend.
I’ve been clutching the blue paper bag to my chest, I’m so nervous to give it to him yet. And if you’re thinking where my beautiful sister is, she’s there in the kitchen, laughing with her and Henry’s friends as usual. “Hey Sunny! Is that you, Sunny?”
I almost choke from my champagne when I suddenly heard a voice of a woman beside me. I tilted my head beside me and saw Henry’s mom, smiling at me. “Auntie Margaret!”
“Oh Sunny, I already knew it was you! You’re the only one wearing such thick round glasses here.” She said, not knowing if that’s an insult or a compliment. “Why don’t you mingle with others? Have you seen Henry already? Why don’t you talk to him?”
“N-No, Auntie. I don’t actually have any friends here that’s why I’m alone here. But, I’m actually enjoying it, hehehe…”
“Oh, my Sunny, you never really changed. By the way, how have you been? How’s your mom?”
“Well, she’s okay, still working as a college professor at Kingsley University.”
She smiled, “I see, being smart as ever.”
“Sunny?”
We both stopped talking and saw Henry already standing there, looking at us. “H-Henry..”
“Why are you here? Why don’t you join us there in the kitchen?”
“N-No, I’m fine here.”
Henry chuckled, then he sat next to me. “Okay then let me just stay with you here.”
My heart started beating so fast when he said that. He’s been like this ever since, he always makes sure that I don’t feel alone, he always talks to me, making sure that I don’t feel bored and out-of-place. Oh Henry, why are you so perfect?
“So, what’s your gift?” he suddenly asked, looking at the paper bag that I was holding.
“Err…”
“Henry! Come here!” one of his friends suddenly called him. “Huh? What is it, Daniel?”
“Let’s see what your girlfriend brought for you!” his friend replied.
Henry looked at me and I just nodded at him and smiled. He stood up and walked towards his kitchen then I just heard them laughing and teasing my sister with him. “Why don’t we go there and look what’s happening?” his mom suddenly said to me.
“O-Okay…”
Maybe I’ll just give this gift to Henry and then I’ll leave.
The moment that we stepped inside the kitchen, I saw Henry showing the pink knitted sweatshirt that Mira gave him. “This is so cute, babe! Thank you so much!” he said, then he hugged her.
“I’m so sorry babe, I know it’s not your favorite color…”
“No, actually I find pink really masculine. I think from now on, this is my favorite color already. I no longer want blue.” Henry said which made all of their friends laugh.
I looked at the paper bag that I was holding. It’s blue. “I-I’m sorry Auntie, but I need to go home now.”
“Huh? But you haven’t—
“Thank you so much.”
I was trying to hold back my tears as I ran outside Henry’s pad. I went downstairs with my head lowered and I was biting my lip. When my emotions built up and my feet finally felt weak, I had no choice but to sit on the stairs as I covered my face with my palm. I burst into tears.
Oh well, of course, Henry would love everything that my sister would give him. Because he loves her, while me, he just treats me as his younger sister. No matter how hard I try, I know he wouldn’t love me back. Who would even love an introverted, ugly, and idiot woman like me?
“Want some tissue?”
My ugly crying session halted when I suddenly heard someone’s voice. I raised my head, wiped my tears, and looked up, only to see Damon standing in front of me, holding a tissue in his hand. “W-What are you doing here?”
“I should be the one asking you that. Why are you here outside? Are you talking with your ghost friends again?”
I frowned at him then I grabbed the tissue in his hand, “Shut up, I’m going home now. Your girl is upstairs, you can go there.” I stood up then I started walking, “By the way, thanks for the tissue.”
Maybe I’ll just lock myself inside my room again and write new drafts for my new story. That’s right, that’s what I should do. “Hey nerdy!”
“Don’t tell me you’ll ask for payment for these tissues?” I looked at him.
“You’re right and if you have forgotten already, I didn’t come here to go to that four-eyed man’s birthday party. I came here to remind you that today is my mom’s birthday too.”
My eyes widened, “I-It’s your mom’s birthday?”
“Uh-huh. That’s why you need to fix that face of yours and get you dressed up. We’re having dinner outside.” He grabbed my hand and started dragging me along with him. “W-Wait, c-can you just tell her that I can’t go? I-I don’t feel really good today.”
“No I can’t, you’re going with me. Don’t you know how excited my mom is to see you again? She’s been calling me for a thousand times asking if you’re going to show up on her birthday.”
I looked at him, “R-Really?”
“Yes, so let’s go now and stop being so dramatic already.”
“D-Dramatic? W-What did you say? I’m being dramatic?!”
“If crying over something unimportant isn’t being dramatic then what do you call that?”
“Of course, it’s emotion! I cried because I love him!”
“And does he love you too?”
I closed my mouth and lowered my head, “See? He doesn’t even love you so what’s the point of crying over it?”
