Just as Manfred got home from work, Ashley Watson came out to welcome him.
“Sir, something bad happens. Ms. Jones is missed!”
Manfred’s eyes dulled. “What do you mean she is missed?”
“Ms. Jones came back from work and parked her car outside the gate. When the super drove it into the yard, Ms. Jones wasn’t around. The super said a black Maybach had picked her up….”
Manfred frowned hard. “I see.”
A black Maybach….
He got into his car, started the engine and sped away.
In the Gordon Mansion, Manfred stopped the car and scurried towards the living room.
When he reached its door, he took a deep breath and slowed down.
Almost every members of the Gordon family was there.
Chester was sitting in the middle of the room. On his left was his younger brother Jayden, and Jayden’s wife, Evelyn. The children were absent.
On Chester’s right was his wife Alba. When she saw Manfred, she smiled, “Manfred is back. Come in quickly!”
Manfred frowned and swept around but didn’t see the woman he wanted to see.
Before he could say anything, Chester yelled sternly,
“Come here!”
Only then did Manfred notice there was a leather horsewhip beside Chester’s hand.
Manfred had seen him whipping people in the house with it but never tasted its wrath.
“What is this for?”
Chester remained silent, but Jayden could no longer bite his tongue.
“Manfred, don’t take it personally. But you made a mistake. We know you have fallen for a Jones, but you shouldn’t have used our money to buy her a company!”
As expected! Manfred frowned and looked to Chester.
“Don’t you need to investigate before pinning this on me?”
Chester remained silent with a stony face. Manfred sneered, “It looks like you have made up your mind, Dad!”
Taking off his coat, Manfred walked to his father.
Jayden and Evelyn wanted to say something, but only Alba had the courage. “Chester, after all, Manfred is the president of the Far Eastern Group. Why don’t you cut him some slack this time?”
“What are you worried about? He made a mistake and should be punished. As his elders, we should teach him a lesson!”
At that, Chester landed a whip.
Blood oozed from Manfred’s back, staining his white shirt.
It wasn’t fun anymore, and all the onlookers flinched.
The whip was simply scary.
However, Manfred only gritted his teeth in silence. Chester didn’t stop until ten weals emerged.
“Manfred, I have never doubted you when it comes to doing business. You can be in a relationship, but you shouldn’t lose yourself in it. Look what have happened to your brother! Do you also want to end up dead?”
Manfred moved as if he had been wound-free.
“I am not him!”
“It’s decided! Say no more. You will move back immediately. Call Doctor Jackson….”
Manfred frowned. “Where is she?”
“You ungrateful brat!” Chester gritted his teeth and roared, “I have taken care of her. You will not speak of her name again! Your second uncle said the Bakers’ only daughter is back in Russell City from abroad. I will arrange a meeting for you as soon as possible.”
Manfred’s face dulled, and he curled his lips.
“Fine! I’ll resign,” sneered he.
“You!” Chester’s face turned red in rage. “You wouldn’t go without a fight, I guess?”
“No, I’m injured, so I fear I can’t be a good president for the company. Doesn’t Uncle Jayden want Carl to take over? Now it is a good time.”
Joy touched Jayden’s face, but Chester would never agree to that, because he knew Carl wasn’t good enough.
However, Manfred was dead serious, so Chester had to compromise. “Come back!”
Manfred stopped and turned to look at everyone.
“Bring her out!” Chester ordered.
Afterwards, the servants opened the door and invited Selina out, who had been locked in the next room.
As soon as Selina came out, she looked towards Manfred. When she noticed the blood on his back, her eyes turned red.
She had seen many sides of Manfred, but this was a new one.
“You heard everything? You must be happy we are a mess because of you.” Chester said to Selina.
Selina pursed her lips and said, “I think you’ve all misunderstood. Actually, Mr. Gordon and I aren’t that close. We had a deal, and we will part ways in a year.”
Chester was shocked to hear that. He kept looking back and forth at them to read their faces, for fear Selina might be lying.
“Are you telling the truth?”
“Of course!” Selina smiled bitterly. “If you don’t believe me, you can investigate. I only sought Mr. Gordon’s help to divorce my ex-husband. Mr. Gordon took that for me just now because he had promised to protect me for a year. I will not marry him, nor will I be of trouble for you.”
After saying that, Selina darted a glance at Manfred. “He is a man of his word.”
Manfred frowned. This woman….
“Manfred, is that so?” Chester asked.
Manfred strode to the door without replying. Selina quickly followed but then turned around. “If you don’t believe me, feel free to check,” she said.
At that, she left to chase after Manfred.
After Manfred left, Jayden looked at Chester with disappointment. “Chester, you believe that? You saw what Manfred did for her just now!”
“Shut up!” Chester said unhappily. “Manfred is my son. I know him. And I know what you are thinking. If Carl really wants to work in the company, ask him to fight for it. Don’t play tricks on me.”
Jayden was upset but nodded, because Chester was the man of the family. “Got it.”
On the revolving stairs behind the pair, Bonnie, who had been watching them, clenched her teeth and ran over, looking serious.
…
Manfred walked fast.
Selina followed closely behind. He suddenly stopped, and she bumped into his back.
Her heart lurched. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. Let’s hurry home. I’ll clean up your wounds.”
“No need!” He said in a deep voice. “You can go now.”
Selina was surprised. “You don’t need to wait a year. You can leave now,” he said coldly.
“I’m not leaving!” Her nose went sore. “I know you are just trying to protect me. But don’t worry. I’ve explained to them we only have one year….”
“I said leave!” He got mad suddenly and startled her.
Before she could react, he had sped away.
