Chapter 42: Does It Hurt?

Book:The Unexpected Love Published:2024-5-1

Selina froze and didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. She was finally free but she was not happy as she had expected.
After her mother passed away, no one had been as nice to her as Manfred.
At the beginning, she had turned a blind eye to her heart, thinking it was nothing but a deal. However, did she really have no feelings for him?

Manfred drove far and could no longer see Selina in the rearview mirror.
He thought if he couldn’t see her, he would be less upset. However, it only got worse.
Cursing under his breath, he turned the steering wheel and traced his steps.
But she wasn’t there anymore. His heart lurched. Did Jayden make a move again?
However, on second thought, it wasn’t likely. Jayden wasn’t that stupid to take her at the Gordon Mansion.
Stubborn as she was, Selina hated being ordered the most. She might be doing exactly what Manfred had asked her not to do.
With that thought, Manfred drove home.
Sure enough, ten minutes later, he saw the headstrong woman slowly walking barefoot.
He didn’t know what to do about her.
He stopped the car in front of her and yelled, “Get in.”
Selina was surprised and turned her head. A smile touched her face when she saw him.
“Manfred! I knew you wouldn’t leave me.”
Manfred was helpless. “Why aren’t you wearing shoes?”
“High heels hurt my feet!” she said frowning.
Sure enough, a blister was on her fair heel.
He drove in silence with a long face.
Selina was quiet for a while before saying, “Manfred, let’s cherish the time we have left.”
Manfred was taken aback. “Stupid woman, don’t you want to leave?”
Selina felt sad but faked a calm expression. “Who says I can’t? But you have done so much for me, and I want to repay you.”
Silence descended the car.
After a long time, Manfred whispered, “I don’t need that.”
When they arrived home, Ashley had already left. She only worked here during the day.
Selina fetched the medicine kit and wanted to apply ointment to Manfred. To her surprise, he stopped her and pinned her on the couch.
She blushed. “Your back is injured!”
He ignored her and held down her flailing feet. Then he looked down and took something from the medicine kit. She realized he was going to put medicine on her heel.
He did it with his head held low. She could see the concentration on his profile. He had such a chiseled and charming face.
Her heart beating wildly, she quickly looked away but saw the bloodstains on his back.
He never groaned about it.
“Does it hurt?” she asked and slowly sat up to unbutton his shirt from behind.
The next second, she gulped.
The wounds were deep and open. Although the blood had clotted, it was scary.
Manfred frowned. Just as he was about to get up, a cold little hand touched his back.
She traced the wounds and gave him an itchy sensation. His back stiffened.
“Does it hurt?” she asked in distress.
He frowned. He had grown up in the United States with no family. He had seen so many fights, but this was the first time someone had asked him if he was in pain.
His heart lurched.
Turning around, he kissed Selina’s lips passionately.
She froze and then wrapped her arms around his neck.
Unlike the last time when she had been drunk, she knew what she was doing.
She also knew this man was worth it.
The long night turned into a beautiful dream.
The next morning, when Selina woke up, Manfred was still asleep. She craned her neck to check out his back. She had applied medicine to him before going to bed, and it had started to heal.
Just as she was about to get up, he grabbed her hand.
“You want to ditch me after we just had sex?”
“What?” Selina did not understand what he meant.
But he loved the confused look on her face.
He pulled her back into his arms and gave her a long French kiss. Then he let go of her, and she ran away.
He stared at her back with a deep gaze.
For the first time, he doubted whether it was right to keep her.
Ashley made breakfast. It was rare for the pair to have breakfast at home. Then they parted ways and went to work.
In the past few days, Selina had read many cases. She decided to make her draft Chinese-style.
Mainly because she thought it would be special when everyone was making theirs Western-style or Japanese-style. It was like the Chinese style had been forgotten.
She got herself busy, and Darnell snuck to her.
“What is this? Chinese style?”
Selina was surprised and smiled, “You can see that?” She was just finding the right colors!
“It’s all red, so it must be. It’s pretty good, very unique.” Darnell smiled, “You need to hand in your draft tomorrow. So, it must be done today.”
“Got it!” She nodded.
After a busy morning, she finally finished her first draft. It was satisfactory.
During dinner, her colleague walked over.
“Selina, can I join you?”
Selina was surprised. She recognized this young lady as a senior designer in the Design Department. Her name was Denise Atton.
Selina had seen some of her designs and felt they were excellent. Therefore, she looked up to Denise.
Selina was happy Denise came to her.
“Of course.” Denise was basically her first friend at the company.
Denise was talkative. After the meal, they knew quite a lot about each other.
Denise smiled, “I’ve noticed you have been working hard. If there’s anything you don’t understand, you can ask me.”
Selina nodded and watched her leave. It had been a long time since she had a relaxed chat with someone, so she felt Denise was too friendly.
In the afternoon, Selina had a brief meeting. After work, she quickly grabbed her laptop and went home.
Her draft still needed a lot of work, and she had to finish it tonight.
But when she got home, she couldn’t find it in her laptop.
