Abby waved her hands repeatedly.
“No, you don’t need to…”
“Well, let me invite you to dinner tonight. Are you available?” Brian raised his hand and glanced at his watch. It was still early.
She didn’t speak.
What was this about? Did the president invite her to dinner?
Abby flushed.
“You should give me a chance to thank you, right? Otherwise, others will say that I am a big man. How could I ask a girl for food? Look. It doesn’t sound good.”
Brian said humorously and vividly, which amused Abby and made her laugh.
She raised her head. The breeze blew the hair on her forehead, revealing her smooth and beautiful forehead. She smiled and simply replied, “Okay!”
Brian was really excited. He thought she would decline him in a timid way, but he didn’t expect her to be so straightforward.
He thought for a while, “Why don’t we go to a German restaurant? It is owned by my friend. It just opened, and I heard that the business is good. It is a star-rated private club with a restaurant and hotel service. It will be safe and assured to go there.”
Safe and assured?
She thought, “Do you need to have a meal like this?”
Knowing that she was suspicious again, Brian explained, “I’m talking about food safety. Pure organic food is reassuring.”
Only then did Abby know that her careful thoughts had long been seen through. She was so embarrassed!
Brian didn’t say anything, just quietly watching her embarrassed look tenderly.
Suddenly, Abby seemed to think of something and asked, “Mr. Davies, what time is it?”
Brian raised his eyebrows slightly and glanced at his watch.
“One forty.”
“What—” Abby was startled.
“Damn it!”
She actually forgot that there was a meeting at two o’clock. It was the meeting held by Chief Secretary Lily Smith in person. If she were not present, she was afraid that that woman would talk something behind her back.
“By the way, err… Mr. Davies, I have a very important meeting, so I need to leave now.” Abby said and was about to run away, but turned her head without forgetting to say something.
“By the way, you haven’t slept all night. If there is nothing particularly important, you should take a rest. I’ll go first.”
Brian wanted to stop her, but the woman walked away without looking back.
She just left without even discussing the time, place, and food about the dinner.
What important meetings could she have?
What important things could he do?
The most important thing was to be with her!
Brian furrowed his brows helplessly. The first time he had a problem that he didn’t know how to solve even if he racked his brains.
Fortunately, she left in time and caught up with the meeting. But it was still relatively late.
At the conference table, Lily Smith gave her a questioning look.
“Sorry, I’m late.” Abby greeted softly.
Lily glanced at her coldly without speaking.
The meeting began.
Although Abby didn’t like Lily Smith very much, she had to admit that she was definitely competent and outstanding at work.
She did have a shrewd mind and extremely brisk. Once she was faced with some of the tricky problems, she could easily solve them.
If there was nothing unpleasant that had happened before, Abby really wanted to regard her as her idol.
…
Unfortunately, someone’s cell phone rang.
The colleagues exchanged glances.
Lily’s face suddenly became cold, “I said it a long time ago. In my meetings, the phone must be turned off! Who is it? Stand up.”
Abby finally realized that her cell phone was ringing!
“Damn it!”
She just hit right on the target. She was focusing on chatting with the president on the top floor just now, so she forgot to mute her phone.
She stood up, “I’m sorry, I forgot.” As she said, she took out the phone and muted it. But it was actually Tina Green’s call.
What did she want to do?
She didn’t know whether she should pick up the phone.
Finally, Abby turned off her phone.
Lily gave her a cold glance and then said coldly, “Continue the meeting!”
She didn’t know if Lily Smith did this on purpose. It was a simple small meeting, but she stalled it and wasn’t willing to end it. It was not until two hours later that the meeting was finally over. And Abby was handed over some documents to translate.
Abby looked at this thick file, knowing that she wouldn’t be able to finish it until 11 or 12 o’clock without working overtime, let alone having dinner.
The plan of having dinner with the president for the first time was ruined…
As Abby went back to her desk, her phone rang again. It was from Tina Green.
Abby walked to the corridor and picked up the phone.
“Abby, haven’t you got off work yet?”
Tina knew that she would get off work at five o’clock. Now it was only after four o’clock. It was unnecessary to ask this.
“Yes. It’s early. I probably have to work overtime very late today.”
“What? Overtime? No, no.” Tina sounded anxious on the phone, “Abby, can you tell your leader that you can’t work overtime tonight? Or you can ask your colleague to help you.”
She could ask someone to help. Abby knew that Luka’s English was also good, so translating some simple documents wouldn’t be a problem for her at all. However, she really wanted to know what made Tina call her in person.
“Abby! Today’s dinner is very important. We’re going to have dinner with your father’s old friend. Do you remember? When you were young…”
Tina held the phone and talked to her about so many things.
Abby felt that she didn’t need to attend this dinner at all. How could she remember which uncle treated her well when she was a child?
However, before she was going to reject her, she heard Tina say again.
“Abby, it’s almost five o’clock now, so you can get your stuff and come out. We are just outside the Davies Group… Yes, yes! Your father and I are here.”
In this way, Abby couldn’t find any excuses to reject her.
Therefore she had to agree and said that she would go down after a while.
Abby hung up the phone and walked hurriedly to her office. However, in a place that was not far away from her, a woman in red high-heel shoes came out of the corner.
Abby asked Luka to help her with the documents. She ate her sweets today and agreed to help her immediately, but her condition was to eat the sweet-scented osmanthus cake Abby made tomorrow.
Abby shook her head, smiled, and teased her. “You are such a foodie.”
Walking into the elevator, Abby took out her cell phone and edited a text message to Brian, which basically meant that something happened tonight and she couldn’t have dinner with him. She also said that next time she would treat him and so on.
Walking out of the gate of the building, Abby saw her father’s car parked aside from a distance. Tina Green was standing outside the car, beckoning to her after seeing her coming out.
