Chapter 64- I miss him

*Kat’s Pov
“I guess from those sunken eyes, which is definitely not the ones your dad and mom has, some bastard has broken my sweetheart’s heart.” He said instead of questioning me. He observes like my dad too. Why am I saying it like that instead of -my dad observes like him-. Though for me it has been a troublesome trait of this family.
“Long story short grandpa, Yes he did.” I said avoiding his searching eyes. Dad got his eyes. I miss him.
“I want to know everything but first you should rest.” He said while motioning me inside.
“Oh, where’s my manners? You must be her friend. Welcome to my sweet abode. I am Katherine’s grandfather.” He extended his hands to Amanda for a handshake.
“Katherine has mentioned to me about you sir.” She said while extending her hand forward.
“Oh! you are such a sweet girl!” He exclaimed surprised. Can’t blame him for being surprised, I wouldn’t have mentioned about him to her if she hadn’t known about his letter. There’s really nothing to say about someone who I hadn’t seen face-to-face for my whole life. The only times I saw him was when my parents video-called him. Though the conversation only lasted few minutes and just once a year.
After grandpa’s and Amanda’s greetings, grandpa had escorted us to one of the rooms.
Strangely I felt a sense of familiarity as I entered one of the rooms he showed, though I have never been here before.
It might be the way the room was designed. Yet along with the sense of familiarity I felt a little strangeness as well.
Everything in the room was in contrast with one another that didn’t match at all.
The room looked as if it was of a boy’s but being used as a storage room by some female of this family, which is evident from the pile of clothes on the bed, hangers, plastic covers, parcel, beauty products lying around.
If we were given this room the whole afternoon will be gone just to get this room cleared even to walk around.
Looking at Amanda’s disgusted expression told me it was not only me who found this very odd.
“This used to be your dad’s room before Natalie, your step-grandmother, began using it as her storage room. I thought you might want to be in your dad’s old room that is why I have taken you to this room unless you want to change it to one of our guestroom?” He asked as he too looked around with an expression as if this is his first time to be in this room.
As much as I don’t want to be in a room that my dad has spent his childhood in, even if the room has little to no signs of this being his room other than the blue painting and worn out rockstar posters, I cant say no to grandpa’s sweet gesture. I can’t believe my dad who used to chastise me for my choice of music was once into rock music. Nothing wrong with rock just that it’s not my taste.
“No grandpa, its fine we will adjust here.” I said while looking around the cluster of my grandmother’s stuffs.
“Sorry for the mess kiddo. Unfortunately, my wife had fired our maid this morning. Something about she’s not cleaning properly even though such issue was not there for the entire 5 or so years she’s been here.” He said the last sentence under his breathe, not intending for us to hear but I did.
” Anyways, it’s finally so nice to see you after years of wanting to meet you in real life and not on screen. You look like his female version.” His voice quivers , making me turn around to see his eyes tearing up. He, like my father, is a very emotional person too. I feel guilty for not asking my dad to see him. But if my father even refuses to talk about his family there’s nothing much that I can do. Maybe there’s a reason as to why my father avoided his family.
Which makes me question whether coming here was a right choice.
“Sorry grandpa, for not visiting you.” I said sadly and guiltily.
“No dear, it’s neither yours nor your dad’s fault. I do understand why your dad didn’t want you to meet us, it’s-” He stopped abruptly. We looked curiously at him while he avoided making eye contact with me. Now I am more curious about this family and the secrets held here. Maybe it might not be so bad choice after all. Only time will tell.
After few minutes of uncomfortable silence. He sighed. “You’ll understand soon kiddo. Now you two ladies freshen up, we have our dinner at 8pm.” I nodded to which he left.
“Is it only me who felt weirded out by the whole conversation and the room?” Amanda asked as she surveyed the room questioningly and annoyed showing her curiousness and how weirded out she is.
” Nope.” I answered while I went to clear the stuffs by stacking them at a corner till I meet the owner of these things to ask what to do with them.
The room had been used as if my grandmother was happy that dad left. After we had cleaned the bedroom plus the bathroom, which looked like it hadn’t it been used for 2 decades, we had little time to freshen up before it was time for dinner.
Though I wish I had a little more time to mentally prepare for this dinner. Something in me tells me that this would be the first time I will have a very eventful dinner.
