Book:A DASH OF TEMPTATION Published:2024-6-2

David preferred darkness to light, and that was the reason why he figured it would be better to visit the house at night. After so much work, he and George had finally tracked down the location the texts and calls were coming from, and although David couldn’t wait to get his hands on the bastard who had caused him so much stress, he figured it would be better to do it at night. He liked the shadows, the silence, and the fact that most people were asleep. Even those awake were on the low end of their energy cycle -although not him. He made sure of that.
He didn’t know just how many men would be at the house, so he’d brought two men from the agency to join him and George. He had also contemplated bringing Michael along, but decided it would be better if he stayed with Bonnie until he was sure that this was finally over. So far, there were no reports from Michael about anything being suspicious, and David was beginning to think that the message had been nothing but another threat, but he still wanted to be safe. He decided to just call to check up on how things were going with Bonnie and Michael.
David called Michael three times and got no answer, then he started to get really worried. Michael always answered at the first call and if he wasn’t picking up, David had to assume that something had gone horribly wrong and the thought of that brought chills down his spine. When he called two more times and got nothing, he pushed his chair backwards and grabbed his jacket.
Michael stared at him with a stunned expression on his face. “What’s going on?” he asked as he watched David grab his gun.
“Michael isn’t picking up” David replied stiffly.
Michael raised an eyebrow. “So?….”
“So something might be wrong. I have to go check it out”
“And this has nothing to do with Bonnie Rimmer? Look, I know you care about her, but you know how quickly a mission can go wrong when things are personal… just saying. Maybe you shouldn’t react so personally and emotionally when it comes to her.”
David glared at George. He wanted to say something in reply, but he was already too worried about what could be wrong, so he dashed out of the building and headed for his car.

When David got to Bonnie’s house, he knew that something was wrong even before he entered the house. He could feel it and couldn’t shake that feeling in his gut that Bonnie was in danger. The house was weirdly quiet. Too quiet… and when David knocked twice and got no reply, he grabbed the handle and attempted to open the door. It wouldn’t budge as it was locked from inside….
David got even more worried, then he rushed towards the backyard to try the back door. If he couldn’t get in from there, he was going to break down the fucking door, he thought as he pulled out his gun.
The back door was open. Weird… David thought, but when he spotted the broken glass, he got ready for action. With his gun ready and his ears listening intently for any kind of noise, David gently pushed the door open.
David wasn’t quite sure what he expected to see, but it certainly wasn’t Michael, covered in a pool of his own blood that he expected to see. He looked lifeless just lying there and David freaked out, afraid that he was dead. He rushed forward and shook Micheal… all the time regretting why he didn’t come sooner. If Michael died, it would be because of him and no one deserved to die… not for him. He thought of Bonnie, and he knew immediately that it would be useless to look for her in the house… she wasn’t here. She was gone….
Probably even shot too… he thought. Oh God! He shook his head and blocked out the thought… thinking that way would do nothing but screw up his head even more so he concentrated on Michael. He checked for a pulse and was relieved to see that Michael was still breathing, but barely. He needed help as soon as possible if he was going to survive. Who knew how long he had been lying there.
David pulled out his phone and called for help and when he was sure that they were on their way, he grabbed some clean towels and rushed to the tap. After he put them under warm water, he rushed back to Michael. When he tried to assist him to lie down in a more comfortable position, Michael slowly opened his eyes… although they were still half closed.
“He took her, man” he said as he recognized David.
David nodded. “I know” he said, “I know… Please stop talking. I already called for help and they are on their way. You’re going to be okay”
He covered the wound with the wet towel and applied a little pressure to hold the wound edges together to control the bleeding. David stayed with Michael until help arrived and he was taken to the hospital. He still had to go to the station to make a statement and it was evening when he returned to meet with George.
George tried to make him wait. Insisting that he was probably tired and not in the right frame of mind to go on the mission, but David refused
Now that the police were involved, Bonnie would be in more danger and it wouldn’t take long before the gist was all over town. Her father would know about it too, and now he regretted not telling them about it sooner.
But what scared him more was the thought of what Bonnie could be going through. After seeing the condition Michael was in, he couldn’t spend one more hour without doing something to get her back…. And if they had hurt her… the thought sent fear, anger and this uncontrollable need for revenge down his spine. He was ready to do anything to get her back, and at this point, he didn’t care what he’d have to do for that to happen. He was putting an end to this tonight. For Michael…. for Bonnie…. And after that he wasn’t going to waste anymore time to tell her how he felt about her. The thought of the way he’d pushed her away haunted him, and he would never be able to forgive himself if he didn’t get the chance to tell her the truth.
He glanced at George. “I’m doing this not tomorrow or next… but tonight. And I’ll go alone if need be, but I need you. Are you coming with me or not?”
George gave him a look. “You’re crazy” he said, “But yeah, I’m coming with you”
