At the hospital, Charlotte took a number and queued up. When it was her turn, she told the doctor about her symptoms. The doctor looked at her somewhat strangely.
“Have you been sleepy lately?”
Charlotte nodded.
“Did you feel nauseous when you’re brushing your teeth in the morning?”
Charlotte nodded again.
“And do you occasionally have the urgency to urinate?”
This question confused Charlotte quite a bit. She thought for a while before nodding again.
“Does this have anything to do with my illness?”
The doctor looked at her helplessly and continued asking, “How long has it been since your menstrual period?”
Hearing that, Charlotte counted, “A little over a month…”
The moment she uttered those words, she suddenly comprehended what the doctor was meaning. Her face gradually changed to one of understanding.
The doctor smiled. “You’ve been sexually active recently, right? You must pay more attention to your body. I won’t prescribe the medicine for you. Instead, you’d better go and take a new number to make sure.”
Charlotte left the hospital, hanging her head in disappointment.
She didn’t dare to take a new number and instead went to the pharmacy to buy a pregnancy test kit. Once she got back to the Moore family, she locked herself in the bathroom.
Charlotte waited anxiously for what felt like forever. When she saw the pregnancy test was positive, she, who was initially feeling prickly because of her illness, almost threw up again.
She looked down at her flat belly and couldn’t believe it. At the time, everything was too sudden, and she’d never even consummated her marriage with her husband. She’d fled home in a panic, but before she could tell anyone what happened, they forced her to marry another man. She was overcome with grief and had forgotten the whole incident, so she missed her chance to take emergency contraceptive pills.
Now, she finally discovered the little life in her belly.
No! Charlotte covered her mouth with her hand. She was still in shock. No, she couldn’t be panic since she still wasn’t sure about the whole thing.
Maybe the pregnancy test was wrong. She should go to the hospital to be sure. And so Charlotte picked up the test and threw it in the trash. She got up and left the bathroom.
Charlotte was riddled with guilt, and she wondered if it was a symptom of her pregnancy. After exiting the bathroom, she kept looking around, fearing Kennedy would turn up.
Fortunately, Kennedy didn’t return until later in the evening.
…
As it grew later, Charlotte’s panic grew. She hurriedly took a shower and dragged her suitcase and a stool to sit outside the door and waited.
When Kennedy got back from work, he saw her sitting drowsily on the stool at the door.
She had no choice. The doctor hadn’t prescribed her anything for her cold. Because Charlotte was too worried about whether she really was pregnant, she’d only drank water the entire day.
She’d caught a cold, but she had taken no medicine. She also hadn’t gotten any proper sleep so her cold was inherently worse than normal.
Kennedy looked at the petite figure, slightly stunned. Did she stay here all day?
Glancing at her again, he realized she’d changed her clothes and taken a shower. She’d must’ve gone to his room to rest while he was away and she’d moved outside the door before he got back. Humph, it seems like she still has some self-awareness.
“Mr. Kennedy?” Nathan was still confused and wanted clarification. “Do you want me to-”
“Let her be.”
“Okay.”
Nathan pushed Kennedy’s wheelchair into the room. The sound of the door closing startled Charlotte awake.
Her head was so heavy. She wanted to have a sleep badly…
Charlotte massaged her temples before standing up and walking downstairs.
She went into the kitchen and poured herself a cup of water. After drinking a few mouthfuls, she started feeling nauseous again. She was so scared she set down her cup hastily and rushed out of the kitchen.
“Grandpa is always confident of your capabilities. I have no concerns about you handling this matter.”
“Yes, Grandpa.”
When Charlotte rushed out of the kitchen, she nearly bumped into Reynold who was talking with Manfred.
They stared at each other for a moment. Reynold’s eyes became stern. “Christina?”
Charlotte subconsciously straightened her posture and nodded in panic.
“You should be with Kennedy in his room now. Why did you come downstairs?”
“Uh…”
Charlotte’s red lips parted slightly, but before she could answer, Manfred spoke up. “That’s right. I heard the maid say earlier that you slept in the hallway last night outside his room. You look quite unwell now. Is it because you caught a cold?”
“What?” Reynold’s expression changed. “You slept in the hall? What’s going on?”
Charlotte was dumbfounded. She bit her lower lip. It’s over. Why did Manfred have to tell Randolph about this? If Kennedy was reprimanded by Reynold later, she would suffer greatly and he could even expose her real identity.
The worries of that happening gripping her heart. Charlotte hurriedly waved her hand. “Mr. Reynold, no such thing happened. I was just too tired last night, and I fell asleep in front of the room with no one noticing me. After I woke up, I stumbled back to bed.”
Reynold’s eyes were sharp and stern. It seemed like he was able to read the minds of others around him.
After a few moments, Reynold sighed. “You don’t need to lie about Kennedy. As his grandfather, I know him all too well. It was selfish for me to let you marry him.”
Charlotte raised her head. She was somewhat surprised and flattered by his words. She’d thought that Reynold was very strict and fierce, so it was a nice surprise for her to find him being so considerate of her.
“Please, come with me. Let’s go speak with Kennedy.”
Finishing speaking, Reynold walked upstairs with the support of his cane. Charlotte’s face changed and she quickly followed him. “Mr. Reynold, please don’t!”
Hearing this, Reynold stopped his pace. “Don’t? Do you want to sleep in the hall the whole time and be the joke of all the servants?”
Manfred also moved forward and agrees. “Yes. Not to mention that you can’t keep sleeping in the doorway. Your body won’t be able to stand it.”
Charlotte bit her lip and shook her head. “I’m really fine. I just worked too hard yesterday, really. I’ll make sure to make it into the room tonight. Mr. Reynold, please don’t worry about the relationship between Kennedy and me. Since I married into the Moore family, I’ll take good care of him.”
Hearing what Charlotte had to say, Reynold kept silent for a long moment. Eventually, he turned to leave without saying another word.
After Reynold left, Manfred looked at her helplessly.
“Come on, why won’t you let me help you?”
Charlotte glanced at him. “I’m fine.”
Without another word, she turned around and went upstairs.
Although Kennedy’s legs were limp, many saw him as handsome. He was exceptionally vigorous at work, so even though he was in a wheelchair, they still considered him extremely capable. But there’d been no woman by his side. Reynold held a wedding for him this time without asking his opinion, and Kennedy didn’t even attend. Therefore, the maids in the Moore family were clear in their minds that the newly married woman was not valued. Hence, inevitably, they would say something bad about her behind the scene.
When Charlotte went upstairs, she walked past several maids. The maid purposely bumped Charlotte’s shoulder and made Charlotte stumble a few steps back. Fortunately, she was able to hold the banister to stabilize herself.
“You…”
“I’m sorry, Missus. I didn’t see you just now. I was too focused on my work and thought you were a maid. I’m sorry, do you need my help?”
Although the maid spoke words proper of her position in the hose, she spoke them in such an imposing and arrogant manner, showing without a doubt that she had no desire to move forward and help Charlotte.
