Charlotte was silent for a moment. She gazed at the maid. It was clear the maid had deliberately bumped into her.
Charlotte said nothing. Instead, she stood for a moment before deciding to walk away as a few more maids approached.
“Do you really think that marrying into the Moore family makes you a noble lady? Since Mr. Kennedy doesn’t like you, your status is literally inferior to a maid.”
“Yeah, look at her. I heard she slept in the hallway outside Mr. Kennedy’s room last night. He must’ve chased her out. If I were her, I’d quickly pack things and go home rather than continue staying here to play a fool.”
“Does she even know she’s playing a fool? They only recognize money in their eyes!”
When Charlotte was far enough away, she could no longer hear them talking about her. Her face turned terribly pale. She hugged herself and slowly slid down the wall by the door.
Why? Why did she have to endure all that? Was it because she divorced her cheating husband?
Charlotte buried her face in her knees. The mocking words of the maids, the fact that her parents forced her to marry Kennedy, and the first night in the Moore house flashed through her mind…
Charlotte’s stomach suddenly felt uncomfortable. She jerked her head up.
No, no! She must go to the hospital to do a check tomorrow. She couldn’t be pregnant, she couldn’t!
When Charlotte raised her head, the door to the room opened at the same time. Nathan pushed Kennedy’s wheelchair out. Charlotte heard the wheels on the floor and subconsciously looked over.
Kennedy simply glanced her way and was unexpectedly stunned by Charlotte’s tearful eyes. It was as if someone casually threw a small stone into a calm lake and caused ripples on the water’s surface.
Charlotte wasn’t ugly. Her features were what many men desired, while her eyelashes were long and curved. Her eyes were like clear, fresh springs where all the spiritual mana in the world was gathered.
That didn’t mean the spring wasn’t an icy-cold one.
Her eyes had the skill of making others feel cold and icy. Her eyes didn’t show the kind of charm a woman was expected to have. But at that moment, her eyelashes were stained with tears. Her tear-reddened eyes made her look weak and vulnerable. And she looked so pitiful crouched there like a ball that people couldn’t help but want to pity her.
The two of them stared at each other without uttering a word.
After a while, Charlotte spoke in a soft voice, “You… you’re heading out?”
Her voice was hoarse and nasally.
Unprecedentedly, Kennedy curled his lips into a line and nodded. “Yes.”
“Okay.”
Charlotte didn’t say anything else. She turned her head and lowered her eyes, staring at the tips of her feet.
Kennedy stared at her, and his eyes gradually darkened.
“Didn’t I say that you shouldn’t make an ass out of yourself here?”
Hearing that, Charlotte raised her head and looked at him timidly. “But we agreed on this before. You also promised me, didn’t you?”
“Hmph.” Kennedy sneered. “I promised you? When?”
Charlotte became speechless. It seemed he really hadn’t promised her anything. What he did that night was leave without returning. Had she misunderstood him?
Thinking about that, Charlotte lowered her eyes and bit her lip.
“Before I find her, I can let you stay here. However, we have to set some ground rules.” Kennedy said, pulling Charlotte out of her thoughts.
Charlotte’s head jerked up. “Find who?”
Kennedy’s eyes looked eerie and frightening. “You better learn not to ask things you shouldn’t know.”
Charlotte lowered her eyes again. He was right. Did the person he wanted to find really matter to her? Why had she asked that? They were just the titular couple. As long as he allowed her to stay, everything would be fine.
“Alright, whatever, it’s your call,” Charlotte whispered.
“The bed is mine. You have to figure it out yourself where you’ll sleep.
“Your things can only be put in your suitcase, but not in my cabinet.
“And, you’re not allowed to touch me.”
Well, she could still sleep on the floor if he wouldn’t allow her to sleep on the bed. And she could still buy herself a cabinet if he did not allow her to put things in his cabinet. But why had he asked her not to touch him?
Charlotte raised her head and looked at him with a strange expression. Who would want to touch him?
Although Kennedy looked handsome, Charlotte was not a woman who desired sex.
Thinking about all that, Charlotte readily responded. “Okay, I agree with these.”
“Nathan.”
“Yes.”
“Let’s go.”
Nathan pushed Kennedy’s wheelchair down the hall and the two of them left.
Charlotte watched them leave and finally heaved a sigh of relief. Then she slowly smiled to herself.
Being able to set some ground rules with Kennedy meant she was really allowed to stay there.
Charlotte got up and carried her suitcase into the room.
…
When Charlotte got up the next day, she dressed in inconspicuous clothes, put on a hat, and headed out.
When she reached the front door, she found Manfred, who was about to go to the company.
“Charlotte? Are you going to the office to find Kennedy? I’m also going there; do you need me to drive you there?”
Charlotte didn’t expect she would see him that morning. When she thought of the place she was going to later, she shook her head. “Thank you, Manfred. I’m not going to the office, though.”
“Oh? Then where are you going? I’ll drive you there.”
“No need. The place I’m going is in the opposite direction of the office. It isn’t on your route.”
“Okay then, take care of yourself.”
Charlotte walked for a long time before she reached the main road. Before getting on the bus, she put on her mask. She really had a guilty conscience.
The result of the pregnancy test the day before made her restless for a long time and she hadn’t slept well the night before. She hoped the test result was wrong.
After arriving at the hospital, Charlotte went to take a number and wait to be called. The people around her looked at her with weird expressions. Charlotte coughed lightly, took her sunglasses out of her bag, and put them on. That made the others look at her with even weirder expressions.
Imagine a woman arrived at the department of gynecology and obstetrics wearing a strange outfit. She even wore a hat, mask, and sunglasses. It was as if she refused to let anyone see her.
The more Charlotte tried to keep a low profile, the more counterproductive it became. After all, wearing such an outfit in a public place, she would definitely draw the attention of others.
It was finally her turn. When the doctor saw a person who didn’t even show her eyes, the doctor couldn’t help but frown. “What’re you doing here? Are you here for a check-up?”
Charlotte coughed lightly and reached up to pull off her mask. “Yes, I’m here for a check-up.”
“Why do you make yourself look so mysterious… Are you so ashamed you don’t want to be seen by others?” the doctor casually, narrowing his eyes. “Do you work in that kind of career?”
Hearing those words, Charlotte was flabbergasted. She had no idea what the doctor meant. “Huh?”
“I just asked if you work in a career where pregnancy would seriously get in the way?”
Charlotte thought for a moment and the realization finally dawned on her. “Doctor, I-”
“So, you got knocked up by accident? If that happens, you just go get an abortion?” The doctor sighed. “Why do you guys never care about your bodies? Yesterday, there was a woman in the same line of work as you. She’s been knocked up five or six times. How many abortions does she want to have in her life? Doesn’t she worry her body can’t withstand it anymore?”
“I’m not-” Charlotte wanted to explain that she did not work in that kind of career, but before she spoke, several people dressed all in black entered the waiting room and scared everyone inside.
Seeing people enter, Charlotte hurriedly put on her mask because of her guilty conscience and got up to leave, not wanting to be involved in anything.
“Stop!”
To her astonishment, the people in black were stalking toward her. Seeing her trying to leave, they stopped her.
