Chapter 34 Coming to See My Baby

Book:Love You With All My Heart Published:2024-5-1

Nancy walks straight up to Lawrence and sulks, “Why did you come here so late at night?”
Lawrence glances down at her belly and replies without hesitation, “I wanted to see my baby.”
“It’s not your baby!” Nancy snarls, rearing up like an animal baring her fangs and claws.
“No matter what you say, I know this is my baby. Although you might not admit this, but as long as I know this, it’s all right.” And then he grabs her hand and starts dragging her away with him.
“Wait! Where are you taking me?” Nancy tries to pull away but she can’t escape his grip.
Lawrence slows his pace so she can keep up and wraps his large hand around hers. It feels good to feel his soft, warm hands.
“Come with me! Ever since I saw you I couldn’t get any peace of mind.”
Nancy feels the same way. She has been restless ever since she saw him.
Lawrence leads her to a sidewalk. Most of the passersby crossing the street are lovers who are holding hands.
Nancy follows behind, her eyes trailing down to the point where they are holding hands. Is he really serious…
Lawrence didn’t say anything. He takes her along without another word and she just stops fighting him. Unexpectedly, all the anger that has festered within her over all this time just melted away.
This moment with him is so serene; it is as if the whole world has fallen into a beautiful silence.
“Please give me another chance. That man hurt you two years ago, but I won’t do the same thing.” Lawrence says, as he walks on ahead. Nancy is stunned.
“Nancy, I am the baby’s father. Who else can you find to be a better father for the child?” Lawrence stops, and asks turning towards her.
A tall street lamp overhead him baths his face in a golden light, making him look spellbinding. As if he has stepped out from a dream… Nancy stares at him transfixed, unable to say anything.
“Just give me one chance to be the child’s father. I will never let you down!” Lawrence promises her. Nancy has never seen him this serious before.
Seeing the hesitation on her eyes, Lawrence’s heart wrenches. He tells her, “Marry me. You don’t want the child to grow up without its real father, right?”
“Hah. Are you making jokes again? Or playing mind games with me?” Nancy feels stupefied. She always thought that he is a moron. Why else will he be talking to her like this now?
Lawrence turns gravely towards her and pokes her head with his finger. “Why do you overthink like this? Why can’t you think like a normal person?”
“I am overthinking? I’m not normal!?” Nancy snaps awake from her enchantment like she has just been doused with a bucket of icy water, her hackles rising.
Lawrence freezes. He realizes Nancy really didn’t think like an ordinary person after all. Instead, she worries away over something and draws baseless conclusions that are out of touch with reality. To get through to her, he has to be outmaneuvering her psychologically.
“Why are you staring at me? I am normal. It’s just that being with you makes things a little.. Um.”
Lawrence stops her from speaking, covering her mouth. Nancy shoves her hands away furiously. He’s teasing her again! Won’t he ever change?
He holds onto her as she struggles against him until she gradually lowers her guard. Lawrence seizes her, kissing her lips fiercely.
