“I’m listening,” Emily turned to Lena as soon as they got into the house. She angrily dropped some of the grocery bags on the counter which made a loud sound which frightened Lena.
“Sister… It’s not what you are thinking about,” Lena fumbled but Emily wouldn’t have any of it. “What do you mean it’s not what I think? Explain yourself right now or I’ll surely report you to mom and you know what she will do to you.”
Lena looked at her quietly not knowing what to do. Even after the long distance back home, she still didn’t find a lie to say. “Uhmm… Uhmm,” She stuttered, not knowing what to say.
“I’m waiting!” Emily gave her a fierce look that she has never seen before. Why does Emily look so angry that she had gone on an online dating site?
She narrowed her eyes and then she asked him, “Why do you look furious?” Am I too young to date someone?”
“That’s the difference!” Emily interjected. “Dating someone and chatting with someone you barely know for real is very different. It’s dangerous for you as a minor to go on dating sites and try to find love there. You might meet lots of people that will mislead you.”
Oh! So that’s why she is so angry. Lena smiled and Emily looked even more furious, “Why are you smiling? Did I say anything funny that I am unaware of?”
“You just look so cute being all worried and stuff… Acting like the protective big sister you are,” She commented and Emily scrambled around to search for something.
Immediately she found it, she threw it at Lena… Anything to bring her senses back. The girl is obviously joking around about her safety. She is trying to educate her on why she shouldn’t be using online dating sites yet she is saying something about cuteness.
Lena chuckled and caught the carrot Emily threw at her. She moved backwards and washed the carrot quickly in the sink. Emily was speechless as she began to eat the carrot.
“Really! Is that all you’ve got?” Lena teased her. Emily was so angry that she walked out of the kitchen not before threatening her, “As soon as mom comes back, I am going to tell her.”
Lena almost choked on the carrot when she heard this. How will she tell Emily the truth? Jeez! What is she going to do?
But she still ran after Emily to try and persuade her. She didn’t leave the carrot behind though.
Later that night, they were sitting around the table eating dinner. Emily looked at Lena and gave her a meaningful gaze. Lena seem to have realized Emily’s unsaid words cause she immediately turned a little pale.
She shook her head sideways and tried to stop Emily. But Emily turned to their mother and called out gently, “Mother, I have something to say.”
Mrs Jones looked up from the bowl of food she has been devouring. She looked at Emily as if waiting patiently for her to say what she wants to tell her.
Lena gasped and Emily obviously heard her cause at that very moment, she opened her mouth to inform her mother what had happened today when her phone rang, more like vibrated.
“Excuse me,” She changed her words and turned away to check her phone. Lena watched in relief as her face twisted in a frown after reading the message that had just come in.
She sighed and thought that at least she had been able to save herself even though she had to burst her plans in the process. She immediately looked away when Emily stared at her as if she had already figured it out.
She just pretended like she didn’t see Emily staring at her curiously even though she could feel the intense stare.
“Emily,” Mrs Jones said, reminding Emily of what she had tried to say earlier. “You had something to tell me.”
“No… Never mind mother. It was nothing. Carry on with your meal,” She replied to her mother instantly.
Mrs Jones didn’t continue eating, she stared at Emily at first and then Lena trying to figure out why she thought something is amiss. But eventually, she shrugged her shoulders and turned back to her food.
Lena was clearing the dishes and putting them into the dishwasher when Emily came and pulled her away from it. She raised her phone closely for Lena to see what was written on the phone screen.
“What is this?” She inquired.
“Ouch… You shouldn’t pull me when I’m unaware like that. What if I had lost my footing and gotten hurt?” Lena ignored her question.
“Don’t try to act oblivious to me. Who’s Steve? Which meeting is he talking about and why the heck is he asking me to meet at Delight’s at eight pm sharp next week Saturday? How did he get my number,” Emily bombarded her with questions.
“How do I answer you when you keep on asking me question after question? How do you even know I am connected to this?” She asked.
“Cause I know you are the only mischievous one in this house to pull off this kind of trick,” Emily answered easily.
“Okay… That’s why I didn’t want you to know about it yet since it’s still next Saturday but there was no way I could stop you from implicating me in front of mother,” Lena started and she got interrupted again.
“That still doesn’t explain how one Mr Steve got my number,” Emily mumbled, looking annoyed.
“Just calm down and let me explain,” Lena told her with a smile. “The message you saw from that dating site is for you… I created an account with your details including your phone number that’s why you received a personal message.”
Emily turned speechless with Lena’s words. Lena immediately walked backwards to protect herself from Emily’s wrath and when Emily finally reacted, Lena almost ran out of the kitchen.
“What are you trying to tell me!? Elena Madeline Jones!!! I swear I’ll kill you if this turns out to be true!” Emily yelled and turned around to look for an object.
“What did I do wrong? I only tried to get a new date for you,” Lena immediately ran to the other side of the kitchen island.
