Chapter 50

Book:Fated To Be His Mate Published:2024-6-2

“You did it, Cassie! Don’t you dare lie to me!” He yells at her, and she flinches. Her heartbeat increases rapidly, seeing him in this state.
“How could you? How could you have done this to me, Cassie? All I ever did was love you, and you think that the best way to pay me back is to try to kill me? Why?” He runs his fingers through his hair frustratingly like he’s losing his mind, or maybe he has lost it completely. He feels betrayed and fooled, he feels like he was used by this lady standing in front of him.
“I didn’t do it. That… That… That’s not poison. It’s Milo’s food,” She tries to defend herself, but the look he casts her is so deadly and dangerous that she can’t help turning her face away. That face was the same look he had given her now was the same he gave her when she first came to the castle. She feels her heart heavy with many thoughts. She wishes that there’s something she can do to prove her innocence, but it seems like she’s handicapped.
“Why did I trust you? Why did I love you? Why did you fool me? Why did you use me, Cassie? I should’ve listened to my instinct… What was I even expecting? That you’ll be any different from that betrayer you call a father? I thought that you were different… I thought that it was your father I had issues with and not with you… I thought that loving you was the best thing, but turns out it was the biggest mistake I ever made in my life, and you know what? I hate you with everything in me… I hate you for fooling me for so long, I hate you for using me… And I curse the day met you!” He roars angrily, holding his hair and pulling it forcefully, but he doesn’t feel satisfied, he doesn’t feel the pain. The only pain he feels is deep inside his heart, he feels like a sharp dagger has been thrust so deeply into his heart, he finds it difficult to breathe, he feels his soul leaving him slowly.
More tears stream down her cheeks as she only stares at him, her heart broken into million pieces. As much as she wants to defend herself, seeing that he’ll never believe her, what’s the point of trying to?
“I will make sure that you pay for this, Cassie. I will make sure that you cry in pain, I will make sure that you beg me and not for mercy, but to take your life. For the pain you have caused in my heart, for the betrayals, and for all the lies you told me, I’ll make sure that you spend the rest of your life regretting it. Mark my words, Cassie… You’ll regret it!” Staring into her eyes intently, he says to her between gritted teeth, and she gulps down nothing nervously.
“Guards! Guards!” Two guards rush in.
“Take her away,” He instructs them, turning his back to them. His heart hurts deeply, he doesn’t want anyone to hurt her, but at this point, he’s left with no choice. She chose this path, so she should’ve known what’ll happen when she did this.
“Yes, my lord,” The guards bow slightly, and with that, they carry Cassie away, and she didn’t try to object. Of course, she couldn’t have brought herself to do that, knowing that it’ll be pointless, right?
Later in the evening…
Damien paces in the garden, having so many thoughts running through his mind. He suddenly stops and runs his fingers through his hair. He tries to convince himself that it didn’t really happen, but it did anyway, and it hurts him deeply like his heart is being ripped off his chest.
Still lost in thoughts, he suddenly feels the presence of someone, and he tilts his head to see Kai standing beside him. He sighs briefly, staring into space.
“Do you believe that she’s the one?” Kai asks after glancing at him, and he sighs briefly.
“I don’t know what to think, Kai. I have never been this pained all my life…” He sighs briefly, trying to fight back the tears that are trying to force their way out of his eyes.
“Do you ever trust her? Maybe you never loved her enough… Maybe you never…”
“Would you believe her if you were in my shoes? This same woman is the daughter of my father’s killer…”
“But you knew that before you allowed yourself fall in love with her… You knew that before you made up your mind to take her out of your hatred for her father… Why aren’t you thinking about this way the way I am, Damien? Why are you not seeing that this might be a setup…”
“And what if she’s guilty? What if it’s not a setup?” He finally cuts him off, glancing at him, and he sighs briefly.
“You have to do something about this, Damien. Cassie… She loves you so much, and from what I could gather about her, she hates that man as much as you hate him, so there’s no way she’ll do this to you as per his order. She was worried about you when she learned about your ill health, and when I told her that nobody was allowed to see you, she still risked her life to come to see you. Someone that wishes you death will never do that, so you have to rethink this. I’ll leave you for now,” and with that, Kai turns around and stride out of the garden, leaving Damien alone there.
He sighs briefly in frustration. What is he to believe now? This is complicated.
Later in the prison…
Hugging her feet to herself and resting her back on the wall as she stares into space, tears keep streaming down her cheeks. Her heart hurts deeply, recalling everything she had said to her moments ago, hurts her badly. As much as she understands that he was being like that because of the pain he is going through, it still hurts to know that he doesn’t trust her. What’s love without trust?
Here she was, thinking that they’ll live as a happy couple after the sweet night together the previous day, funny how she ended up in the prison instead. She didn’t imagine that she’ll be faced with this calamity after a night with him, if only she had known this would happen, she wouldn’t have allowed him to sleep with her the previous night.
Still lost in thoughts, she suddenly feels someone’s presence, the scent of the person is somewhat familiar, so she needs no one to tell her who it is. It’s alpha Damien.
Slowly, she raises her gaze to look at him, and the expression on his face isn’t something that can be stared at for long, as it’s too scary for the eyes. Seeing the look on his face, her heart sinks into her stomach, and she gulps down nothing nervously.
“Who did it?” The confusing question she can never figure out is thrown at her again, and she bites her bottom lip. How’s she supposed to know the one that poisoned him?
“This… How did it end up in your room? Explain it to me,” His voice sounds calm as he throws the container to her front. Although his voice sounds calm, the aura surrounding it is what will scare anyone to death. The look on his face is emotional, his heart still grieves for what happened.
“I don’t know…” She stutters in a low tone, but a bit loud for him to hear what she has said.
“You don’t know? Can you explain how that was found in your room? What were you doing with it?” He asks, his voice a little bit higher this time.
With her hands trembling, she reaches out for the container and picks it up. Slowly, she opens it and takes it close to her nose. The smell of the substance in the container is different from the cat’s food she kept inside it. Someone must’ve replaced the cat food with the poison, but who might it be?
“You can’t explain it, can you?” He scoffs unbelievably, clenching his fists beside him while glaring down at her with so much anger running in his vein. He feels like strangling her to death at this moment, but he tries to calm himself down.
“You’ll pay for this, Cassie,” And with that, he turns around and stride out of the prison, while she cries her eyes out…
