Chapter 49

Book:Fated To Be His Mate Published:2024-6-2

The next day…
Staring at the small container in his hand, his heart wrenches in pain as anger spurs through him. This is the poison that he has been taking all this while.
“Where did you say you got it from again?” Trying hard not to believe the guard, he asks him again. How can he say that he found it in Cassie’s room? How’s that even possible? How’s he supposed to believe that?
“My lord, in maiden Cassie’s room,” Hearing this again, he bites his bottom lip and takes a deep breath, trying so hard to control this anger that keeps trying to consume him. He refuses to believe this, Cassie can’t possibly be the one that has done this to him, right? She can’t possibly be the one behind this all this while and was still worried about him, right?
“Get me the doctor,” He instructs the guard, who bows slightly and exits the room almost immediately to go carry out the instruction.
He stares at the container that contains black substances, and he sighs briefly for the umpteenth time this is not happening, right? How can this be possible? Still staring at the container with so many thoughts running through his mind, a knock suddenly sounds on his door, causing him to raise his gaze to the closed door.
“Come in,” The door opens seconds later, and the doctor walks in as per his order.
“What’s this?” He asks, showing the container to the doctor, who takes it from him and examines it for a while.
“It’s the poison, my lord,” Hearing this, his heart sinks into his stomach and he feels his world crashing down before his eyes. No, this is not happening… Cassie didn’t betray him, it’s just a coincidence.
“You may leave now,” Saying this to the doctor, he bows slightly before he turns around and strides out of the room, leaving him alone.
“Guard! Guards!” Two guards storms into his room upon hearing his roar.
“My lord…” They both bow slightly.
“Get me Cassie, now!” He instructs, and they both glance at each other, wondering what is happening, but none of them would’ve dared to question his order, right? Turning around, they amble out of the room.
A few minutes later…
“My lord, you sent for me,” She says as soon as she steps into the room. Recalling what happened between them the previous night, she finds it difficult to look into his eyes, as she’s too nervous to do that. Two minutes passed, and there was no word from Damien, causing her to raise her gaze in confusion and curiosity.
Raising her gaze to look at him, her heart misses a beat at the sight that welcomes her. Alpha Damien is right in front of her, glaring daggers at her as if he’s going to devour her. He tries so hard not to be angry, but realizing that the woman he has come to love has betrayed him, he feels his heart hurt deeply. He shouldn’t have trusted her, he shouldn’t have been so foolish to have loved her. What was she thinking? She’s the daughter of the man that betrayed his father years ago, she has the same blood running in the veins of her and her father, how could he not have known that she’s tend to betray him along the way?
“My lord?” Confused, she calls his attention, and he sighs briefly, throwing his head back and taking a deep breath. She looks so innocent and doesn’t look like she did it, but there’s no way he’ll be fooled by her innocent eyes, right?
“What is this?” He suddenly shows the container to her, and she pulls a puzzled look.
“What are you doing with that? I thought I kept it inside my room,” She says confusingly, wondering how the alpha got it. Hearing this from her, his heart crushes and he feels like his whole world has crashed. He thought that she’ll deny it, but here she is, accepting it. What did he do to deserve this? All he ever did was love her, why did she have to poison him? Why did she want to kill him?
“So, it’s true… Yo… you did it truly?” His lips tremble unbelievably as he shakes his head slowly. Even if the truth is staring right back at him, he still finds it difficult to believe. How’s he supposed to believe that the woman who claimed to love him so much has been feeding him poison?
“What are you talking about? That’s Milo’s food. Was wondering how you laid your hands on it,” She explains to him, still having a confused look on her face.
“Milo’s food indeed. What have I ever done to you, Cassie? What the hell did I do to deserve this from you? All these while, it was you? It was you all along and you still dared to… You still dare to hang around me and pretended like it didn’t happen?” His hands tremble angrily as he yells at her, causing her to flinch.
“Wha… what are you talking about?” Confused, she asks him.
“You poisoned me!” Hearing this, her heart sinks into her stomach and her mouth drops open as she stares at him in shock, wondering what he’s talking about. Why would she poison him?
“You can’t talk now, huh? Why? Who asked you to do it? Was it your father? Speak to me, was he the one that asked you to poison me?” Holding her by her shoulders, he shakes her lightly as a drop of tears finally escapes his eye.
“What are you talking about, my lord?” She asks almost in a whisper, her voice quivering in fear. Her body trembles as she stares at him confusingly. Her body is not reacting like this because she’s guilty, she’s just too shocked and can’t believe what her ears are hearing right now.
“You still dare to lie to me, don’t you? This… This is the poisonous substance you have been feeding me with… You… You have been adding this to my food, didn’t you?” He asks his lips and hands tremble. He prays silently that she’s not really the one, he wishes that she’s innocent, because he’ll be so broken to know that she did this to him, but she’s already playing guilty.
“What are you talking about? I didn’t do it!” She shakes her head in denial, stepping away from him as tears well up in her eyes. How could he have accused her of trying to kill him? She has been so worried about him, she couldn’t sleep because of how worried she was about his health, how could he turn around and accuse her of putting him through this hard time? What will she gain in doing that?
“You did it, Cassie! Don’t you dare lie to me!” He yells this time around, grabbing the flower vase on the dresser, and smashing it on the ground…
