Chapter 116 The Alpha Baton
GOLD PACK
Jovy stood up groggily, wondering who it could be at her door so early in the morning. She had hardly gotten any sleep and had even cried herself to sleep. Jovy almost fell back in shock when she opened the door. She was surprised to see Arlo and Alice by the door. She blinked rapidly when Alice moved past her and walked into the apartment while Arlo in his usual respectful state locked the door behind him.
“What are you both doing here so early?” Jovy asked, running to check the time on her phone. “It’s barely morning.”
“Well we took the night train and arrived at the first cock crow.” Arlo beamed. “Did I get that right?” He asked.
Alice stuttered. “Who cares about your vocabulary? Come here baby.” She patted her free side of the couch gesturing for Jovy to sit next to her.
Like a zombie, Jovy moved like someone on remote control. “Why are you both here? Did Amelia call you? Arlo?” She called out to him.
“A minute please.” He responded, turning the heated water in the cups. He stirred in coffee. “Here you go. Take a deep breath and drink coffee.”
“Thank you.” Jovy muttered, sipping it gently.
Arlo looked at both ladies after settling himself on the floor. “Amelia called us yesterday after dropping you off at home, saying you weren’t in the right frame of mind.”
“We came here as soon as we heard. So tell us, Jovy. What’s going on?” Alice inquired.
Jovy sniffed at the reminder of the shocking news she had heard from the woman. “I don’t know how to put it. But I believe you both remember Tommy’s reference to him not being my father?”
Arlo and Alice shook their eyes with eagerness in their eyes. “Yeah.” They replied in unison.
“Well, it turns out my father who is dead now was the Alpha of this pack and I am the apparent heir.” She announced.
Silence reigned through the entire space while Arlo and Alice stared at her with a shocked expression on their faces.
“Wait? You…You mean in this same pack we are in?” Arlo stuttered. Jovy nodded in response.
“Unbelievable! What the hell are you Jovy? You motherfucking lucky witch!” Alice yelled in glee.
Jovy put both of her hands to her ears and she inhaled deeply. “Can you not yell like that please.”
Alice ignored her plea. She stood up and began to pace the room. “Do you know what this means? You are going to become the Luna of Gold pack! Oh my goodness!” She screamed in a high-pitched tone
“Can you stop screaming like a banshee?! You haven’t even asked her what she thinks about all of this.” Arlo said.
“What is there to think about? This is your home…I mean where you really belong. You have gone through so much and life decides to compensate you.” Alice insisted.
“Alice!” Arlo warned
“Sorry!” She mouthed.
“It’s fine! You know how excited Alice gets.” Jovy added.
Alice huffed. “That doesn’t mean I am unreasonable. I guess the sugar Arlo added to the coffee was a bit too much.”
Arlo folded his fist and shot her a glare. Alice yapped back at him causing Jovy to laugh lightly. She can never get enough of the both of them. “Tell us, Jovy. What do you think?” Alice asked.
Jovy shrugged. “I don’t know exactly. It appears the pack is really in need of a leader and the way Nadia sounded, it seems urgent.”
“Who is Nadia?” Arlo asked.
“My father’s sister.” She responded.
“Hmm…right. Do you think you are up to the task of becoming a Luna?” Alice whispered.
“Do you have Nadia’s contact? How about you call her to meet with us right here? What do you think Alice?” Arlo demanded frantically.
Alice nodded. “I think you are right, Arlo. We need her to know we wouldn’t leave our girl hanging.”
“You both would do that for me?” Jovy sniffed. They nodded. “I love you both. I will call her right away.”
“We love you too.” Arlo grinned.
Searching through her work bag, Jovy dialed the number Nadia had scribbled down and chewed hard on her nail while awaiting the call to be picked.
‘Hello.’ Nadia’s voice boomed through the receiver.
‘Hi, it’s Jovy.’ She muttered.
A clap sounded on the other end of the line. ‘Oh…my goodness! I am so elated that you called back this early. I was almost worried you would run far from me.’
Jovy cleared her throat. ‘Actually I need you to come around to my house and have a proper discussion.’
‘I would love that.’
‘Alright, I will send in my address.’ Jovy said before hanging up.
Returning to her ever bickering friends, they all headed to the kitchen with excited Alice insisting on making breakfast to ease Jovy of her tensed mood. About two hours later, when the three of them had been exhausted from eating a bit too much, a loud knock came from outside.
“That must be Nadia.” Jovy said, trying to stand up from the floor and she walked to the door. She panted heavily only to open the door to find Amelia on the porch. “Hey, Amelia. Good morning.”
Amelia pulled her in for a hug and her eyes bulged out. “How are you? I didn’t think you both would make it this early.” She nodded towards Arlo and Alice.
Jovy ushered her in. “I was surprised myself when I heard the knock.”
They all exchanged pleasantries. Amelia sat on the couch looking exhausted. She didn’t get to sleep well last night cause her thoughts was plagued with the actions of her mother.
“You okay, Amelia?” Alice asked. Amelia was about to respond when the door was knocked on again.
“I think that’s Nadia.” Jovy mused as she headed to the door again. Nadia stood there looking a bit nervous. “Good morning, Nadia.”
Nadia smiled at her. “It’s really nice to see you again, Jovy.”
“Please come in.” Jovy invited her in. “Meet my friends, Arlo and Alice.”
Nadia shook hands with them with a bright smile on her face. “Nice to meet you both. I am Nadia.”
“You are welcome, ma’am.” Arlo and Alice chorused.
Jovy served everyone a glass of juice after they settled onto the couches. She cleared her throat. “I called you here because my friends want to have a word with you.”
“Ok.” Nadia nodded.
Arlo looked towards Alice and she nodded for him to talk. “I am so sorry to have pulled you down here. We just really need to talk about this considering how important it is.”
“I am all ears.” She said.
“Jovy told us about the revelation of her true identity. It’s weird that you came all the way and pick her as your brother’s daughter.” Arlo said.
“I didn’t just pick her. I have been searching for her since my brother’s death three months ago. Also she carries the unique mark of the Alpha.”
“But…I am a latent wolf.” Jovy chipped in.
Nadia sighed. “Jovy, it doesn’t matter. You are the rightful heir and the pack is crumbling without a head. The more we prolong this the more things get worse. When you get to the pack house, you would know you are home.”
“Jovy has gone through so much, ma’am. Not having a father figure has been one of the reasons behind her pains. If anything, she has been subjected to different hurts and we won’t stand by to let such happen again.” Arlo looked serious.
“Also we want your allegiance that our friend isn’t going to end up being a tool for you.” Alice added, holding the same hard gaze.
Nadia took a deep breath. She could understand the fear of the young lads. She had sensed the weakness of Jovy’s wolf from the very first day they met but in between the weakness laid dominance and an unrelenting spirited wolf. She no doubt has the same attribute as Marcel.
“I am only fulfilling the wish of my dead brother. I want the best for the pack and Jovy. She deserves to take her rightful place as the Luna. I assure you that this is a start of something new in her life. Nothing would change that.” She assured.
“Are you willing to jump on this?” Arlo asked Jovy.
Jovy kept her head down as she tried to decipher her thoughts. Something within her could feel it that her life would take a different good turn on that path. Taking a deep breath, she looked up at the six pair of eyes eagerly watching her. “I will go with you, Nadia.”
Nadia gasped in delight. “Thank you so much, Jovy. I promise you this will be worth it. You have made the right decision to take the baton from here.”
“But I don’t know how to act royal or how to run a pack.” Jovy mumbled.
“That shouldn’t bother you, you will definitely flow through it and I’ll be right by your side.” Nadia beamed.
Arlo and Alice squealed in delight and they hugged Jovy tightly. She grinned into their embrace with a hope that her life gets better from there on.
