Chapter 102 A sweet soul
MYSTIC SHADOWS FORTRESS
Jovy groaned feeling some light pain in between her thighs and her belly. Adjusting her eyes to her surrounding, Jovy smiled weakly at the sight of Arlo and she beamed more when the person next to Arlo turned out to be Alice.
“Alice…”
“No…please don’t do that.” Alice cautioned when Jovy attempted to sit up.
“How did you know I was here?” Jovy inquired in a coarse voice.
Alice smiled as she moved to the side of her bed to pour out water from a pitcher into the empty glass placed next to it. She handed it over to Jovy. Drinking to her satisfaction, Jovy felt a bit better. She had been awake for the past three days but had been slipping in and out of sleep. Arlo had been the one she kept seeing whenever she opened her eyes. Jovy couldn’t thank him enough for standing by her despite how hard it might have been.
“Thank you both so much for being here.” She said to them.
Arlo grinned as he held her outstretched hand. “Thank you for staying strong till the end. I don’t know what I would have done if anything happened to you.”
“How did you get to be here, Alice?” Jovy asked again.
“I had called Arlo, according to our agreement to let you meet the woman seeking for you only for me to be told that you have been admitted and just underwent a surgery. It dawned on me the reason you haven’t been picking your calls. I came here as soon as I could. And I am glad you are alright. The Moon Goddess knows I would have had the head of that one you call a husband. The whole of the Fortress would have been on fire by now if anything bad happened to you.” Alice huffed.
Arlo laughed as he placed a hand on her shoulder. “Calm your nerves fire woman. We get the point of your annoyance but she’s all good now.”
Alice snickered. “I know this might sound cruel of me but I know you do know it’s the exact truth. I am glad you lost the child even though it almost had an effect on you.”
“Alice!” Both Jovy and Arlo called out together.
“None of you should give me that look. Do you know how hard it would have been for Jovy? I mean if she had to give birth and end up being all alone with the child and no support from him. Do you know how hard it is being a young mother?” She defended herself.
“She would have had me and you, Alice.” Arlo said.
Alice rolled her eyes. “Did Jovy not tell you that he warned her off letting anyone at the house? And since he is the Alpha, someone like myself can’t go against his order. You only got to be with Jovy because you are a close relative to him.”
Arlo kept mute for a while, he knows Alice was right in that aspect. It had taken a number of threats and just being stubborn to get a chance to spend time with Jovy.
Jovy sighed. “I guess it’s all just to protect me.”
Arlo and Alice exchanged a shocked look. “Are you even listening to yourself, Jovy?” Arlo asked.
“I know-”
Arlo interrupted her. “It has been three days since your surgery and he hasn’t thought it right to visit you.”
“Please tell her.” Alice muttered.
“He might be feeling bad and mourning the death of the child. After all he was going to become a father.” Jovy defended Logan.
Arlo huffed in frustration. Sometimes he can’t help but wonder if Jovy had hit her head or something. Every time Logan does something wrong, she was always seeking an excuse for him. If she wasn’t just healing from her pain, Arlo would have acted petty and tell her all about what Logan had been up to the day she was on the verge of death. But he knows better than to act in such manner.
“You aren’t in love, Jovy. You are madly, insanely and crazily in love. Even though they are all the same meanings. I feel like they might have more meaning hearing them.” Alice blurted. “I was expecting you to wake and keep insisting on the need to break free and run away. But…here you are trying to protect him so bad when your life is at stake.”
Jovy blinked rapidly as she tried to prevent the tears from falling. She knows her crave for him is quite questionable but she believes he would change eventually. Just like the books she had read, especially now that they had lost their child. However, on a second thought, Logan doesn’t worth the wait. What man leaves his wife and mother of his intended child laying at the hospital bed and being looked after by almost strangers? It does hurt her but there is nothing she can do to it too.
“He would come around. I promise.” She said convincingly.
“Where exactly did you get these crazy ideas from?” Alice asked, blinking in disbelief. She would never have thought Jovy would be entangled in the kind of relationship she was in at the moment.
Arlo sighed. “Sometimes, I like to think of it that Jovy might have been hypnotized by him and we aren’t aware.”
Jovy tried to smile. “I have faith in what the Moon Goddess would do. Logan would have a change of heart. Like I said, we both lost a child so he is also mourning the death of our child.” She insisted trying to not scream out in tears.
Her life was in disarray and as much as Jovy might try to deny it nothing is actually working out in her favor. The future seem bleak.
Alice exchanged a solemn look with Arlo. The both of them stared at their friend whom they care so much about in pity. Despite everything Jovy has had to endure, there is a limit to what help they can render to her unless she makes the decision herself.
“Anyways.” Alice broke the discomforting silence. “I was thinking since you still have some days to spend in the hospital, how about I bring the woman who wants to see you over to this place?”
Jovy raised a questioning brow as she glanced towards Arlo. “Are you sure this woman won’t cause more trouble for me?”
Arlo placed a warm hand on Jovy’s outstretched arm and he smiled at her. “Trust me, Jovy. I would be here with you all through the meeting. If she tries anything funny, she would have me to contend with.”
Jovy smiled as she heaved a sigh in resolve. She couldn’t be more thankful for the friends she got lucky with. Without the presence of Arlo and Alice in her life, she would have had it really hard.
“Lest I forget, what is this new found love between you and that witch?” Alice inquired, spreading her lips in a thin line.
“Errr, what am I missing?” Arlo asked.
A small laugh escaped Jovy’s frail lips. “Remember that sister of mine that had been standing on guard outside months ago when you dropped me off at the house?”
Arlo snapped his fingers. “Oh…the snobbish one.”
“I am so glad I am not the only one who is being blunt about that witch.” Alice jubilated.
“Don’t get too excited.” Arlo warned with amusement dancing in his eyes. “I am nothing like you Alice. I have quite the sweetest soul.”
“And I am one of the Moon Goddess favorite.” She retorted.
Jovy couldn’t hold back the laughter as she held tightly to her ribs. “Stop it…you two. So Alice…you were saying?”
“I am just concerned about your new romance. How can you trust Amelia so easily? How can you let her into your life just like that and even let her know everything about you? You gave her a chance despite all that she did to the both of us.” Alice didn’t look too friendly again.
“Ok…Amelia is her name.” Arlo muttered behind.
Jovy sniffed. “Listen Alice, people change. And when I mean they change, it can always be for good-”
“Or for worse.” Alice interjected with a snort.
“I understand your anger but please just give her a chance. Please.” Jovy pleaded, knowing how hard it must be for Alice having to endure her parents separation all because of a girl her age.
Alice shrugged. “I will try to act all forgiving. But I promise to rip her middle hair out if I get to see her.”
“You should just join the wrestling team instead. That might work for you.” Arlo teased.
“You just wait for me.” Alice charged at Arlo.
Arlo was quick to dodge her. The both of them rounding up the room, chasing after each other and their actions putting a wide smile on Jovy’s face.
