Chapter 69 The prideful Beta
MIDNIGHT PACK
Adrian almost screamed out at the top of his lungs after the call ended. He couldn’t believe what he just heard. He had sat down in the study after an uneventful dinner with his wife as usual. The study was his solace, where he could find peace and also out of bounds for Maribel. Almost like books were her undoing and she hated going near them, always saying they whisper to her. He didn’t take her sanity into prospect much but hearing her say that, he could affirm she was hundred percent mentally unstable.
His safe haven was his study room and he had almost turned it into a sleeping room as there was an implanted makeshift couch bed that made him comfy on nights Maribel decided to unleash her terror. How horrible will it sound to hear that Midnight Pack Alpha sleeps in the study? But to avoid such humiliation he had made everyone at the pack house who knew of the trouble his Luna Maribel was making him pass through swear an allegiance to never speak about it beyond the walls of the pack house. That seems like a good deal as there was no way he could stop people from talking when they are inconvenienced not even when he is the Alpha.
Tommy Finlay’s call had definitely made his night. He isn’t joking when he had said he would have a blissful night rest. Tommy hardly calls him on his personal line, if he does he is either calling to make a monetary contribution to a project or inform him about a new investment that would benefit the pack. As much as he wishes Tommy wasn’t screwing Ava alongside, he couldn’t deny the man being a great impact in Midnight Pack.
His happiness knew no bounds as he stared at the analysis of Midnight Pack’s debt to Mystic Shadows Fortress. The whole pack would definitely go bankrupt and sold out like a piece of stale meat if this sort of opportunity had not come through. Not wasting time, he picked up his phone and glanced through his contact. He tapped on a name and dialed the line. As excited as he seem, Adrian had no intention of giving off so much emotion that would make the person react otherwise. He knows how weird they can be.
Alpha Adrian cleared his throat to tone down the extremity of his voice. ‘Good evening, Beta Kyrian.’
‘Yeah?’ The response came abruptly.
Adrian made a silent snicker, he should have known better than to sound polite. It seem like almost everyone at Mystic Shadows Fortress have a rude gene inside of them. Like Beta like Alpha. He snorted internally.
‘Your silence is deafening. I have things to do can you speak up already?’ The voice came again and this time with a irritating edge.
Never has Adrian felt so disrespected and humiliated by a Beta. A Beta is meant to be second in command to an Alpha and should accord the respect he gives to his own Alpha to every other Alpha he comes across. But that wasn’t the case with Mystic Shadow Beta. They are such bullies that loves to toss everyone around.
Adrian sat up as he cleared his throat again. ‘We have found a girl for the Alpha.’
There was a brief pause and some rustling around in the back ground. “Did I hear you clearly?’ Beta Kyrian queried.
Adrian rolled his eyes. ‘Yes. Yes. We have someone. And she would be ready tomorrow evening. We have played our part so I hope our debts would be written off to.’ He sounded all business like.
‘Definitely! As long as you keep your side of the deal and provide the girl as promised by tomorrow then all of your debts would be sorted.’ Not waiting for him to say anything else, Kyrian disconnected the call.
“Bastard!” Adrian spat out in annoyance.
A knock came from behind the door. He didn’t bother to guard himself knowing that Maribel couldn’t be the one. “Come in.” He called out to whomever was there.
His Beta Gabriel walked into the study with his usual gait. Sometimes, Adrian wondered how useless he could be probably he himself was at fault for giving his council so much leverage that all they do is squander money and do all they want like the pack was their inheritance.
Gabriel had gone on a vacation and of course with the pack’s savings. Being a public servant was definitely a hard work. Adrian couldn’t stop him, since he was just as guilty as his Beta. What annoyed Adrian was discovering that some of the unnecessary expenditures was most especially Gabriel’s unexplainable spending.
“Took you long enough.” Adrian jested.
Gabriel looked unfazed as he took a seat opposite Adrian. “I dropped by to say hello to you. It’s been a long while.”
Adrian snorted. “I guess you are here to know if there is more public funds to squander.”
Gabriel grinned widely. “I can’t really do it without your honorable permission.”
Snapping the pen in his hands into two, Adrian growled at Gabriel. “Maybe I forgot to tell you that our pack is about to be bought over by Mystic Shadow Fortress.”
Gabriel stared in amusement before he chuckled hard. “You play too much Adrian. Please don’t mess with me.”
Adrian could sense the panic in his tone and it made him really happy. “I guess it’s safe to say the vacation you took to the Bahamas has messed with your memory.”
“Stop this expensive joke.”
“I am sure you have our debt sheet with you, check it yourself.” Adrian pressed on.
Trying to calm his nerves, Gabriel went through his phone with caution. Adrian watched his eyes roll out of their sockets. Knowing the pack council members might try to act smart and refuse to ton their spending down, refusing to believe the pack is in actual debt. He had made his secretary send the up to date debt results to each of their emails. Gabriel as usual was the last to see it since he went on holidays.
Gabriel covered his mouth with his hand. “Oh shit!”
Adrian chuckled. “I knew you would say that.”
“Why do you look so relaxed? This isn’t funny.”
Standing up, he rounded the table to place a hand on his friend’s tensed shoulders. “Where there is a will there definitely is a way.”
“Really?” Gabriel glared up at him in disbelief.
“Well since we owe Mystic Shadows Fortress so much, we have to pay through our sweat and blood.”
Gabriel shook in fear. “Are we going to be captured?”
“You will find out at the pack council meeting. But just so you know man, if we ever get free from this, you all would be taking just about enough to feed yourselves home. I am so done with being a debtor. You should return home now.”
Adrian watched as Gabriel scampered out of the office. He probably would be making plans on how to run off with his family. He could have told him there was a solution on ground but he hated how pompous Gabriel appears to be. Since he was the son to the former Beta, knowing it is an automatic post for him makes Gabriel lose his sense of reasoning sometimes.
They have been friends since they were little but not exactly so close. Relaxing into his makeshift bed, Adrian laughed out like a maniac when the fearful face of Gabriel flashed through his mind’s eye. It felt good knowing that the mention of Alpha Logan Odell seizing the pack could intimidate anyone especially his prideful Beta.
