Chapter 56 Promises
MIDNIGHT PACK
Alice eventually calmed down after what seem like a lifetime. She hiccuped in between with her head resting on Jovy’s legs. Jovy patted her gently on the back like one would nurse a baby to sleep. She had never seen Alice so broken for a long time and she had almost thought that there was nothing that could break her best friend anymore.
When her first boyfriend had deflowered her and left her the very next day, Alice had been up and running the next day. It was almost as if nothing had happened, she had even gone ahead to fuck the guy about two times and dumped him back when he was beginning to catch feelings for her. When asked why she had to stoop so low, Alice had jubilated saying she felt victorious. Having such a free spirited being wail her heart out in the stillness of the night and it seem so shocking.
“You feel like talking about it now?” Jovy asked.
Alice nodded her head as she sat up and hugged her knees to her chest and she placed her head on it. She kept mute for a while.
“You know, I had always wished for my man to be like my dad. He is so caring. My dad remembers every little detail. He never forgets anything that concerns mom and I. It’s just a shame that he can’t seem to wear off his bad habits. My dad sleeps around so much and I am beginning to feel like he has a child in every part of the world he has stepped foot on. I won’t be surprised if there is a mixed breed of his somewhere. A half werewolf and half human…” Alice let out a dry laugh at her own joke. “It was okay when he kept his activities outside the pack. I guess mom was satisfied with him not embarrassing her within the pack. She loved him too much to let him off just like that. Now that I have grown things are becoming clearer. He didn’t get caught, not because he didn’t do it near home but he was just good at sneaking around.”
Alice paused to take a breath. When Jovy noticed her countenance, she grabbed a bottle of water, uncapped the cover and handed the bottle to her. Alice gulped half of the water in one go.
“Thank you.” She mumbled.
“Welcome.”
Alice cleared her throat as she maintained her position and continued. “I can’t really tell how long it has been going but he and mom have been having some silent form of feud that I didn’t really pay mind to at first. Until it all went wild this morning, and mom blurted that my dad had been cheating on her with someone old enough to be his daughter. An eighteen year old like myself.”
Jovy gasped and her eyes shot out in shock. “You don’t say!”
Alice chortled. “Crazy right?”
“Who is she?”
Alice’s eyes went dark as she stared at her friend. “You don’t want to know.”
“Why not? Tell me who she is?” Jovy pestered.
“It’s no other than Amelia.”
Jovy eyes bawled out and she went into a fit of dry cough. “Please…please tell me that isn’t true.”
“Believe me, Jovy. I thought it was a misunderstanding until mom showed me his chats with her. And it turned out that Amelia got pregnant and just underwent an abortion.”
Jovy placed a hand to her mouth to hold back the scream and she shook her head in doubt. “Oh no! No…this can’t be. Her mate is Jared. So Amelia possibly couldn’t have been having an affair.”
“You are so naive, Jovy.” Alice said as she let out a scoff.
“How could she?”
“You haven’t heard it all. Mom would have not been aware if dad hasn’t turned himself into a puppet and had gone on a begging spree. He pleaded with Amelia, who said she was no longer interested in keeping up with the relationship all because Jared was beginning to suspect her but she would only continue if he paid her some large amount of money every month. Dad had been begging her on a voice note when mom walked in on him.”
Steadying her breath, Alice bawled her palm into a fist and slammed it into the other free hand. “I am so going to break her neck.”
“That’s insane.” Jovy sounded out of breath.
“You know what’s worse?”
“What?”
“In her chats, she had shaded my mom and called her fat and ugly and my dad being the fool that he is couldn’t do anything to stop her.” Alice sniffed “I hate him for putting my mom through such humiliation.”
They both stayed silent, letting the night glide away with their thoughts and Jovy was the first to break the silence.
“What do you intend to do?”
“Nothing.” Alice shrugged.
Jovy raised a brow. “Don’t forget I know you too well.”
“Fine! I don’t care whatever it is you tell me Jovy but I am definitely going to make sure I beat Amelia to pulp when I see her in school.”
“And when you get suspended what happens then?”
“It’s not like I really care about school.” She scoffed.
“You know what I think Alice, I know you do care. But one thing I can guarantee is, double crossing her outside the school premises isn’t such a bad idea.” Jovy whispered.
A smile spread on Alice’s face. “I see you are the whispering evil fairy.” They both giggled at the same time. “Thanks for being with me, Jovy. Talking to you has made me feel better.”
“It’s fine. I am glad to be here.” Jovy replied.
Alice breathed out heavily. “Let’s forget all about me, let’s talk about you now. And I don’t want you hiding anything from me. Tell me how you feel exactly.”
Jovy took in a deep breath, tears sting at her eyes as the thoughts began to pour in. She had almost forgotten all about them within the past hour she had spent with Alice. “Despite being treated badly by my father, I have never felt so low all my life. Logan treated me with a sort of contempt that was unexplainable. To think that I have fallen for him Alice…” Her voice trailed off.
Alice made an attempt to say something but Jovy held up a hand. “Please Alice let me finish.” She sniffed. “Alice, I know this might sound crazy, but I can’t help how I feel about him. He makes my heart beat so fast, sometimes it feels like it would jump out soon if I wasn’t careful.”
“How do you explain his maltreatment and the fact that he is beginning to envision you more as his sex toy and also finally made you homeless?” Alice stated without mincing words.
Jovy tried to keep her shaky hands to herself. “I don’t know what to say to that.”
“You know what? I feel like you know exactly what’s running through that mind of yours. I just wish I had never taken you to that godforsaken party. I blame myself for being too carefree and letting you have that spiked drink. I wish I had listened to you when you had refused to go at first.” Alice lamented.
Jovy sniffed consistently, “You don’t have to blame yourself Alice please.”
Alice held Jovy’s hands. “Look at me Jovy, I need you to keep that beast out of your head. He is of no importance and would deprive you of your future. Please baby, just listen to me.”
Jovy wiped the tears that slipped down her face with her free hands. “I would try my best Alice.”
“Come here.” Alice placed her forehead on Jovy’s as she stared into her eyes. “Just want you to know like I have always said; that I would always be here for you and would keep to your side for as long as I can.”
Jovy closed her eyes. She shook her head and wrapped her hands around Alice’s neck. “Thank you, Alice.” She mumbled.
“I love you too.” Alice giggled.
Jovy laughed as they both leaned into each other, making silent promises to themselves in the silent night.
