Chapter 55 A cheating father
MIDNIGHT PACK
Alice ran all the way down from her room outside the house, in a sleeveless top and shorts with her hair packed in a rough bun. Igniting her car at one go, she drove out into the road like a maniac almost losing her breath.
Alice drove through the road at a balanced speed as she wasn’t much of a good driver at night and coupled with the fact that she is a tad bit drunk. She had been trying to block out the voices in her head and the thoughts of her parents present situation but a cold breeze in the late hours of the night gets anyone to reflect.
For a while she had known of her father’s exploit but never really thought it would have such a huge effect on her eventually and also to the extent of breaking the family apart. As much as Mr Clark is an obvious loving, caring father and husband, his one flaw is his inability to keep his hands off women.
When she had left to live with her grandma, it had been because of a storm that had hit the family ship then when he got the house maid pregnant. Her mom had almost lost her mind and to keep her young mind from getting affected, the first thing she did to keep Alice safe was to take her far away from her father’s negative drama.
Since they got back together and Alice was able to return to them, she didn’t really think it through as anything serious. It has been about seven years now and the story was rewriting itself. This time it was worse.
Alice gripped the steering wheel as a fresh dose of anger rushed through her. She didn’t understand the anger though but she knew it wasn’t at her father but the bitch that had decided to be the obstacle to her happy family. One would have thought Henry Clark would be smart enough from the last time and pull his stunt far away from the corners of the house but obviously a cheating man is never actually smart. And it turned out the new lady he was fucking is no other person than Amelia.
Gritting her teeth in anger, she swerved roughly to avoid hitting the car coming in front of her. In her reverie, she had unintentionally moved to the other lane. Alice tried hard to concentrate as she took in a deep breath. Even though her life had just tumbled, she still couldn’t let her friend be stranded. To think that, Alice had forgotten all about Jovy’s condition made her feel like an awful friend.
When she eventually got to Old Joe’s diner, Alice practically jumped down from the car and was about to run towards the back to go find her friend but Jovy seem to have been waiting for her for a while as she walked away from the dark shadows of the wall.
Alice smirked. “How could you trust a drunkard and wait out for me?”
Jovy shrugged as she pulled at her bag. “One thing I know you would never do is make me a false promise.”
Alice bit on her lip to prevent the tears from falling as she pulled at Jovy’s hands to give her a tight hug. “I am so sorry you had to be left alone. I was so lost in myself and I didn’t think of you.”
Jovy pat her back gently. “If only you know how much it means to have you jump into the night with your car knowing that was a suicidal mission, all for me to be safe at yours. I would cherish you forever, Alice.”
Alice chuckled. “Me too.” She said, pulling back away from her.
Jovy raised a brow. “What’s with the smirk?”
“Your statement goes on to show that you suck at forgiveness. You still haven’t forgotten that night.” She laughed.
Jovy grinned widely. She didn’t realize Alice had issues driving at night until the day she was forced to experience it two years ago. She had finished from the Diner quite late and it was just about twenty minutes to her father’s return. Alice had just gotten a car as a gift from her dad. Jovy had called her only savior, she arrived in less than five minutes and they were practically flying to Jovy’s house. The Moon Goddess was the only reason they were still alive as Alice almost got them killed.
Jovy spread out her hands in a defense pose. “I was only saying though.”
Alice rolled her eyes. “I am getting better now. I promise.”
Jovy looked around. “Can we leave now before we actually get mugged.”
Faking a shiver, Alice wrapped her arms around herself. “Oh thanks for telling me. I could feel some creepy eyes watching.”
Jovy shot her a glare. “Keep away from throwing such expensive jokes.”
Alice laughed loud as she got into the car after Jovy. Kick-starting the car, Alice looked towards Jovy. “I really don’t want to go home just yet. Can we drive out to the hill and have some takeouts?”
Jovy gave her friend a side glance. It was obvious Alice has a lot of things weighing her down. Despite being tired herself, she wouldn’t mind making such sacrifice to be by her friend’s side.
“Of course, I am famished too.” Jovy replied.
“Great!” Alice muttered.
One beautiful thing about Midnight Pack is the low hills that it was set upon. They are fashioned in a way that they practically surround the whole of the pack. And one can decide to pick what they might consider a perfect angle to sit on and watch the night fade away.
Jovy inhaled deeply as they settled on a hill. On their crazy night sprees when Jovy gets permitted by her father to spend the night out with Alice is when she gets to enjoy the view. As suggested by Alice, they had gone to a mart to gather so many junks that Alice didn’t consider enough until Jovy practically dragged her out of the place.
Alice sighed with delight as she munched on a Jello. “This is beautiful.”
Jovy watched as Alice eyeliners switched from sad to a bit of relief and she could tell it was hard for her to keep up the facade of being strong. She had intentionally waited for Alice to feel more relaxed before trying to bombard her. She winced in horror, when Alice packed more Jellos to fill half of her palm and she poured them into her mouth.
Jovy gulped hard. “Shouldn’t you take it easy on those sugar?”
The look on Alice’s face seem too innocent. “It’s not even that much.” She mumbled amidst a full mouth.
“You know how it is with you when you indulge in so much sugar, Alice.”
“It really won’t hurt for just this one time.” Alice pleaded as she added more to the ones in her mouth.
Jovy snatched the pack from her and tossed it behind her. “Tell me what the hell is wrong with you.”
Alice stared deep into the night. “I hate my dad for doing this to me!” She lamented her voice shaky. “I hate that he made me envision a perfect family. I hate him for being such a hypocrite. I hate everything about him!” She let out a loud scream and more tears fell from her eyes.
Jovy pulled her into herself. She rubbed at her friend’s back to calm her down and to prevent Alice from throwing herself against the hard ground.
