Chapter 23 A picnic
MIDNIGHT PACK
“Why are we here again, Alice?” Jovy asked feeling a bit uncomfortable. She had promised herself to never head out to anywhere with her best friend again just to avoid getting into trouble that would earn her nothing but tortures.
The trouble Jovy got into recently which ended up leaving her heart broken is still very fresh and she definitely hasn’t healed from it. It has been almost two weeks since she had encountered Logan and his appearance had turned her whole life around.
Her father still watched her with skeptical eyes and has mounted her step sister to be her guard every night just to ensure she doesn’t run off yet again. Her life was becoming less self-directional, since she can’t seem to focus on anything anymore but all she thinks of now is Logan and he torments her dreams every night. The thought of him makes her wake up to being horny and wanting him so bad. Jovy Finlay would have never imagined that she would be smitten by a man in this manner.
Jovy observed the ice rink and she awed at how wide the place was. Alice had forced her to take a sick leave from the diner she worked and just to accompany her to the college where she intends to meet her new boyfriend or whatever it was she had said.
It turned out the guy Alice had met at the frat party had taken a keen interest in her and the both of them seem to be having the best moments of their lives. Being insensitive to Alice’s emotions, Jovy always toned her excitement down whenever she spoke about him. Jovy knows she was being unfair for depriving Alice of her right to be happy freely. But Jovy couldn’t help the gloomy and sad feelings that always enveloped her whenever she thinks back to the night.
And this time Jovy didn’t need anyone to tell her that her best friend had brought her along with her as a peace offering. Maybe she could also live freely and stop holding onto a three nights stand as Alice would call it. It was obvious the said man was just bored and needed to keep himself relieved with a pussy. And she had only turned out as a prey. Jovy heart ached whenever she thinks about it. Her life has always been so different that it was beginning to tire her out.
“Jovy!” Alice called out with her face contorting into a concerned look. She looked like she had been at the calling for a while.
Jovy comported herself along side heaving a sigh. She had just zoned out yet again. Alice stomped her feet towards her as she stood still behind the ice rink. Trying not to get pissed, Alice walked with a calm gait halfway towards her friend. To appease her and cheer her up, Alice had asked her new boyfriend David to let them hangout with him and his friends. David is a human but he has a whole lot of werewolf friends and is in the least bothered about having them around. One of the things that had drawn her to him at the party was the moment their eyes locked and he could sense she wasn’t human.
Since the party, Jovy had become more socially recluse and has been moving about like someone who has something stuck up in her ass. If Alice didn’t love her so much, she knew for certain that she would have left her all by herself. But Jovy meant a whole lot to her and there was no way she was going to leave her to wither away all because of someone who hardly remembers her.
“You know you don’t have to do this.” Jovy said to her friend the minute she got closer.
Alice glared at her. “I don’t know what the hell is in that head of yours but I am only doing this to cheer you up.” She said in a low tone.
Jovy folded her arms across her chest. “Cheer me up you say? I am going to lose today’s money from work.”
Alice let out a snort. “No offense to you best friend, but all you have been doing at work is think about the person who cares nothing about you and has moved on with his bloody life!” She snapped.
As if on cue, tears clouded her vision but Jovy looked away to hide her face. She wasn’t going to cry anymore over a man that doesn’t even give a shit about her. “I know that already, Alice. You don’t need to remind me of it.”
Alice let out a deep breathe as she held onto her best friend’s folded hands. “You know that isn’t what I meant. You are still eighteen, Jovy, please learn to live your life to the fullest. Don’t let anyone cage you and not even your father. Please.”
Jovy let out a little laugh as she stared at the creased line of worry that had worked its way on Alice’s face. “Ok mom. Whatever you say.” She raised her hands up in surrender.
Alice rolled her eyes. “Geez! I thought you were never going to say that. Let’s go.” She grabbed at Jovy’s hand and pulled her through the crowd into an open field that had students bustling around.
Jovy gasped out. It was all colorful. Everyone looked so happy as some ran after each other, others just talking amongst themselves and those reading under the shades of the tree. All of them obviously were living in the moment as most of their faces looked so bright.
“Isn’t this beautiful?” Alice smiled happily as she took in the welcoming atmosphere.
Jovy nodded in affirmation. “It is beautiful. Everyone seem so happy.”
“This is why I asked you to come along. You can’t keep confining yourself in the triangle of home, school and the diner.”
“You sometimes talk too much, Alice.” Jovy noted as she rolled her eyes.
Alice laughed out with no remorse. “And that’s why you love me.”
“Of course! You know I love you so much!” Jovy giggled.
“And I love you too…twinem! Come now, let us walk around a bit till we find them. David and his friends are having some sort of picnic birthday celebration for one of them.”
“That’s new. I mean…a picnic birthday for a guy?”
“I was amused too. But it seems they just want to try something different.”
“Sounds creative.”
“Careful.” Alice cautioned her from tripping off.
Jovy nodded in appreciation as she walked around the field, hand in hand with Alice. The air was refreshing and it made her forget all about her worries for a moment. Nature sure was beautiful and has a way of maintaining peace in everyone who took solace in it. Alice was right, she needs to come out to the open more often and refrain from letting her father and Amelia take her youthful years away from her.
“I will be free soon. Just a little more.” Jovy muttered to herself.
All of a sudden Alice jerked her hand free, waving with so much vigor at someone who Jovy already guessed to be David. She had never seen her best friend act so girlish and childish before now.
“Babe!” Alice had her arms thrown out in the air as she ran towards the guy like her life depended on it.
The scene was amusing. Jovy felt a jolt in her heart when she saw David catch Alice and lift her up into the air like a three year old and he kissed her all at once. It made her want to be treated in such way, she wanted to know how it felt to be loved and cared for in that manner.
She began to doubt if she would ever feel such way. Jovy looked up from the grass she had been glaring holes into and she saw Alice’s gesturing her hands towards her to come closer. All of a sudden, she became shy when her eyes caught the sight of the rest of the picnic attendees and it slowed down her movement as she moved towards her best friend. Jovy noticed that each guy had a girl in hand and it made her feel like an alien.
Jovy exchanged a look with Alice, making it obvious that she wasn’t really comfortable in this sort of atmosphere but her best friend chose to ignore her feelings at that moment and remain focused on her boyfriend.
