“Later, I learned that your grandfather had deceived your grandmother and framed me for having another woman. Your grandmother was a very naive woman back then, and she believed him.”
Decades had passed since then, and the love in Old Master Gale’s heart had lessened. That might be so, but his heart was still in a daze. The pain that he felt had continued to loom in his chest.
His voice became a little distant as if he had been transported back in time.
“I wanted to explain to your grandmother, but when I found her, she was already pregnant.
“I felt helpless. She had suffered so much, and her health had always been poor. I was not sure if she could take the stress.
“Therefore, I had no choice but to suffer in silence and acted as if I had really betrayed her. I let her continue to be with your grandfather and raise the child with him.”
Things were different back then; a married woman would find it hard to remarry. It might even ruin the rest of her life.
Therefore, he thought it would be better for everyone if he endured it on his own. Eventually, he got married and had children of his own.
“Over the years, the past seemed to have disappeared. I did not expect to receive a letter from your grandmother one day.”
Old Master Gale looked at Hunter. He knew that he would not be able to accept all the information at one go. Nevertheless, they were facts.
“When I received the letter, I already had a family and several children. I couldn’t leave my family and just walk away with your grandmother. So, I put the letter away and ignored it. I didn’t expect your grandmother to come to see me in person.”
“I don’t know who took the photograph of your grandmother and me. I was about to send her home; I did not kidnap her.”
Hunter remained silent. No one knew if he had heard all of that. However, he had a dark look on his face. The cold aura he emanated was even scarier! Even Old Master Gale, who was used to unpredictable situations and various characters, was a little hesitant to look directly into his intense eyes.
“Eldest Young Master Jackson, this is the truth. I have regrets with your grandmother, but I did not harm her. We separated after I dropped her off at the station. I did not expect that she…”
The old man’s voice was a little hoarse; one could almost hear how he choked with emotions. Nevertheless, Hunter looked indifferent.
“Are you telling me these so that I would let Gale Corporation off?” He sneered. He was a stubborn young man, and it would not be easy to change his mind.
The Old Master did not even know if he had been right or wrong when he came to see him. Would he care about Emily? However, she was pregnant with his child…
“Eldest Young Master Jackson, whether you believe it or not, this matter has nothing to do with Emily, if you still feel a shred of affection for her, please…”
“The amount of affection you have for my grandmother is the same as what I have for your granddaughter.” Hunter sneered at him from his couch.
“It doesn’t matter what you say now, you have wronged my grandmother. My grandmother traveled thousands of miles to see you, and that was how you treated her? You hurt her so badly!”
Old Master Gale did not speak. He might have wronged his former love, but he had no choice. He could not leave his wife and children. They were his biggest responsibility in life.
“Leave. Your words will not change my mind.”
Hunter turned away from him and called at the door, “Liam.”
Liam entered the room with Butler Milo, who made his way to his master. “Old Mast—”
“Let’s go. We’ll leave him to think about it.”
Butler Milo nodded and proceeded to wheel him out. As they were about to exit through the door, Hunter coldly said, “I will still investigate this. If I find out that you had something to do with my grandmother’s death, I won’t let the Gale family off that easily.”
Butler Milo stopped. Old Master Gale’s face was expressionless, and his tone of voice monotonous. “Do as you wish. My conscience is clear.”
Butler Milo grunted and wheeled him out.
They could faintly hear Butler Milo as he complained. “I told you that this b*stard has no heart. What’s the use of pleading with him? Our Emily deserves a better man.”
The old master snapped at him. “Shut up.”
The two men finally went out of sight.
Liam stared at Hunter. He did not know what had happened. “Eldest Young Master, are we still heading out?”
They had many things to do that day, and Eldest Young Master Jackson still had many appointments and site visits. However, it did not look like he wanted to go.
Liam was his assistant, so he had to remind him. “Eldest Young Master, it’s getting late.”
Hunter did not respond; his indifferent eyes continued to stare at the letter in his hand. Liam was a little curious and wanted to see what was in it.
Hunter’s expression darkened as he bellowed, “Look at the letter again, and I’ll have your eyes gouged out!”
Liam stopped in his tracks. “I swear I didn’t see anything!”
Hunter ignored him. He had so many thoughts in his mind, and they almost broke his determination. Even though the little voice in his mind told him the letter was genuine, he could not accept it.
It seemed as if his grandfather had deceived his grandmother into a marriage. Perhaps that was no longer important. He only wanted to know if Old Master Gale had anything to do with his grandmother’s death.
Had he been wrong about Emily as well? Was she not his enemy’s granddaughter? Hunter felt very irritated; he was greatly irritated.
He stood up and walked to the liquor cabinet. He wanted a glass of wine. For some reason, he forwent the glass and lifted the entire bottle to his lips!
Liam knew he was in a bad mood; he was familiar with Hunter’s temper. He wanted to comfort him, but he did not know what to say. Furthermore, Hunter was not someone who would welcome comforting words.
The man downed the whole bottle of wine in one go. He waved his arms, and the bottle fell to the ground and shattered into pieces.
Liam felt uneasy.
Suddenly, Hunter sneered. “So what if she is? She’s a woman who has betrayed me.”
Eldest Young Master Jackson thought of Emily again. If he were a heartless person, things would not be so hard on him those past few days.
Suddenly, someone knocked on the door, and Liam went to open it.
“Third Young Master.” He looked at the man beside him in surprise. “Second Young Master Sharp?”
