Chapter 69
Lucas woke up early the next morning, his mind still clouded with the events of the previous day. He couldn’t believe that he was being accused of murder. He got dressed quickly and walked out of his bedroom, still feeling groggy. As he walked down the stairs, he saw Andrianne waiting for him in the living room.
“Good morning, Lucas,” she said with a smile.
“Morning,” Lucas replied, trying to sound as calm as possible. “The FBI is going to come here to arrest me for the murder of Steve. I need you to get my lawyer on the phone, and have him meet us at the FBI headquarters.”
Andrianne’s eyes widened in shock. “Lucas, are you sure about this? You didn’t do anything wrong.”
“I know I didn’t, but I want to clear my name as soon as possible. I can’t let this accusation ruin my life,” Lucas replied, determination in his voice.
Andrianne nodded, her heart heavy with worry. She quickly got on the phone with Lucas’s lawyer, and they agreed to meet at the FBI headquarters in an hour.
As they waited for the FBI to arrive, Lucas sat on the couch, his head in his hands. Andrianne sat next to him, trying to offer him some comfort.
“It’s going to be okay, Lucas,” she said, placing her hand on his shoulder. “We’ll get through this together.”
Lucas looked up at her, his eyes filled with emotion. “I just can’t believe this is happening. I never thought I would be accused of murder.”
Andrianne took his hand in hers, giving it a reassuring squeeze. “I believe in you, Lucas. We’ll get through this together, no matter what.”
Just then, they heard a knock on the door. Andrianne went to answer it, and two FBI agents walked in.
“Mr. Lucas, we need you to come with us,” one of them said.
Lucas stood up, his face calm and collected. “I’m ready.”
Andrianne watched as Lucas was led away by the FBI agents. She felt a lump form in her throat, tears welling up in her eyes. She knew she had to be strong for Lucas, but she couldn’t help feeling scared and alone.
As she drove to the FBI headquarters, Andrianne’s mind raced with worry. She couldn’t imagine what Lucas was going through. She couldn’t help but think that if she had never been involved with Steve, none of this would be happening.
When they arrived at the FBI headquarters, Andrianne went to find Lucas’s lawyer while he was being processed. She found him waiting outside, and they went in together.
They were led to a small room with a table and two chairs. Lucas was already there, looking tense but determined. Andrianne sat next to him, holding his hand.
The FBI agent who had arrested Lucas walked in and sat down across from them.
“Lucas, do you understand why you’re here?” the agent asked.
“Yes, I do. I’m here because I’m being accused of murder,” Lucas replied.
The agent nodded. “And you’re aware that anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law?”
Lucas nodded, his eyes fixed on the agent.
“Alright then. Let’s get started,” the agent said, pulling out a notepad.
The questioning went on for what felt like hours. Lucas was asked to recount his entire day on the day of Steve’s murder. He was asked about his relationship with Steve and if he had any motive for killing him. Lucas answered every question calmly and honestly, with Andrianne and his lawyer by his side.
Lucas’ father, Richard, sat in his large office, staring at the phone on his desk. He had just received a call from his wife, informing him that their son had been arrested for murder. He couldn’t believe it. How could Lucas be so stupid? How could he let something like this happen?
Richard picked up the phone and dialed the number of one of his lawyers. “This is Richard, I need to speak with you urgently,” he said when the lawyer answered.
“Of course, Mr. Thompson. What can I do for you?” the lawyer asked.
“It’s my son, Lucas. He’s been arrested for murder. I need you to do everything in your power to get him out of police custody.”
The lawyer was silent for a moment before responding. “I understand your concern, Mr. Thompson, but I’m afraid it may not be that simple. The evidence against your son is quite strong, and the police are likely to push for a conviction.”
“I don’t care about the evidence! I need you to find a way to get him out of there. I’ll pay whatever it takes, just get him out!” Richard demanded.
The lawyer sighed. “I’ll see what I can do, Mr. Thompson, but I can’t promise anything. You need to understand that your son is in a very serious situation.”
“I understand that, but you also need to understand that my son is innocent. He wouldn’t hurt a fly, let alone kill someone. I need you to make sure that justice is served,” Richard said firmly.
The lawyer nodded. “I’ll do my best, Mr. Thompson. But I can’t make any guarantees. The legal system is a complex beast, and sometimes even the best lawyers can’t sway it in their favor.”
Richard gritted his teeth in frustration. “I don’t care about the legal system. All I care about is my son. Get him out of there, or find a way to prove his innocence. Do whatever it takes.”
The lawyer sighed again. “I’ll get to work on it right away, Mr. Thompson. But like I said, this won’t be easy.”
“Money is no object. Just get it done,” Richard said before hanging up the phone.
He leaned back in his chair, his mind racing with thoughts of how to get his son out of police custody. He knew that money and power could buy many things, but he also knew that the legal system was not easily swayed. He just hoped that his lawyer could find a way to make it happen.
