CHAPTER 37.
Steve’s demeanor changed, and Andrianne could see the anger in his eyes as he glared at her. “You’re telling me that you’re married to that man? That you’re happy with him?” he asked, his voice low and menacing.
Andrianne felt a twinge of fear in her chest but she held her ground. “I didn’t say I was happy,” she replied evenly. “But it’s not for you to question my life choices.”
Steve took a step closer to her, towering over her small frame. “Andrianne, you can’t seriously expect me to believe that you’re happy in a loveless marriage. You deserve better than that.”
Andrianne was taken aback by Steve’s words. She had never spoken to him about her marriage or her feelings towards Lucas. “How do you know it’s loveless?” she asked, trying to sound confident.
Steve let out a bitter laugh. “It’s written all over your face. I know you, Andrianne. You can’t hide your emotions from me.”
Andrianne felt a pang of sadness as she thought about the past. Steve had always been able to read her like an open book. He had always been able to understand her in a way that no one else ever had.
But that was a long time ago. They were both different people now, and they had gone their separate ways. Andrianne had moved on, or so she thought.
“I don’t want to talk about this anymore,” Andrianne said, trying to change the subject. “We have work to do.”
Steve shook his head. “No, Andrianne. We need to talk about this. I need to know what happened between us. Why did you marry him?”
Andrianne sighed, knowing that Steve wouldn’t give up until he got some answers. “I married Lucas because I thought he was the one. I thought he would make me happy. But I was wrong.”
“And now?” Steve asked, his eyes never leaving hers.
Andrianne shrugged. “Now I’m just trying to make the best of a bad situation.”
Steve’s eyes was filled with lust for Andrianne, and in a split second he pulled her close to him and kissed her passionately, at first Andrianne was shocked then she became scared too scared that she couldn’t even push him away from her, after a while Steve pulled out from the kiss.
Andrianne’s eyes widened in shock as Steve pulled away from her and smirked. She couldn’t believe what had just happened. She had been so caught up in the moment with Lucas that she didn’t even realize Steve was still there.
“What are you talking about?” she asked, her voice shaking. “I didn’t pull away because I love you. I pulled away because you’re my bodyguard and it’s inappropriate for you to be holding me like that.”
Steve chuckled, his smirk growing wider. “Is that really the reason, Andrianne? Or is it because you still have feelings for me?”
Andrianne felt a surge of anger rise within her. “I don’t have feelings for you, Steve. You left me alone for years without any explanation. You don’t get to waltz back into my life and act like nothing happened.”
Steve’s expression softened, and he took a step closer to Andrianne. “I know I messed up, Andrianne. I should’ve never left you like that. But I’m back now, and I want to make things right between us.”
Andrianne shook her head. “It’s too late for that, Steve. I’m married now, to Lucas. He’s my husband, and I love him.”
Steve’s eyes narrowed, and he stepped back from Andrianne. “Lucas? The guy who’s been cheating on you? You really want to be with a man like that?”
Andrianne felt her blood boil at Steve’s words. “That’s not true, Steve. Lucas has been nothing but faithful to me.”
Steve shrugged. “Believe what you want, Andrianne. But deep down, you know I’m right. You still love me, and you always will.”
Andrianne clenched her fists, feeling the anger and frustration building within her. She wanted nothing more than to punch Steve in the face and tell him to leave her alone. But she knew she couldn’t do that, not when he was her bodyguard and Lucas had hired him to keep her safe.
Instead, she took a deep breath and forced herself to stay calm. “I don’t love you, Steve. And even if I did, it wouldn’t matter. I’m with Lucas now, and that’s all that matters.”
Steve’s smirk returned, and he took another step closer to Andrianne. “We’ll see about that, Andrianne. We’ll see.”
Andrianne felt a shiver run down her spine as Steve’s words echoed in her mind. She knew she had to be careful around him, that he was not to be trusted. But she couldn’t shake the feeling that Steve was up to something, that he had an ulterior motive for wanting to be her bodyguard.
Andrianne’s mind was in turmoil as she tried to process the events of the past few days. She couldn’t deny the fact that she still had feelings for Steve, the man who had broken her heart and left her alone. But at the same time, she was married to Lucas, a man who had been nothing but kind and supportive to her. It was a complicated situation, one that left her feeling lost and unsure of what to do.
She couldn’t help but wonder what would happen if she gave in to her feelings for Steve. Would she be betraying Lucas? Would she be throwing away the chance at a happy and stable life with a man who loved her for who she was? And even if she did give in to her feelings, what was the guarantee that Steve wouldn’t break her heart again?
But on the other hand, she couldn’t deny the fact that there was something about Steve that still made her heart flutter. It was the way he looked at her, the way he spoke to her, the way he made her feel alive. It was a feeling she hadn’t experienced in a long time, and it scared her.
As she sat alone in her room, her thoughts racing, she couldn’t help but feel trapped. Trapped by her marriage to Lucas, trapped by her feelings for Steve, trapped by the expectations of society. She longed for freedom, for a chance to be herself without the weight of the world on her shoulders.
