Elena felt a stab in her heart. It did not matter if he had said that on purpose, his words wounded her heart.
She took a deep breath to suppress her pain as hard as she could. Her face had regained a light flush. She promised that she would not care, so why would she care about the pain.
Did she feel the pain because she still cared?
That was silly!
Michael did not stay long. After another half an hour or so, Levi received a call and left with Eldest Young Master Williams.
Elena sat under the shade, as she watched the workers carried on with their business until someone pulled her from behind.
“Elena, what the hell are you thinking? What do you want to do?” It was Sarah, and Elena was surprised to see her there.
“Come with me!” Sarah grabbed her wrist and lifted her from the ground by force.
Elena did not say anything as Sarah led her to a room in the back quarters where the old madam used to live.
Elena’s mood turned dark when she reached the place. What did Sarah mean by that?
“Tell Michael to stop with the digging!” Sarah seemed exasperated as she glared at Elena!
“Why?” Elena studied her facial expression.
However, the usually quiet and warm lady was anxious beyond control. Her calmness had all but vanished.
Elena squinted her eyes and asked, “Eldest Madam, I don’t quite understand your action.”
“You don’t need to understand anything. All you need to do is to tell Michael to stop the dig!”
Elena, however, was not so easily persuaded.
“I think you should give me a reason, and it has to be compelling enough for me to do that.”
“Elena! You were the only one who saw the old madam before she had her accident. Did you not do anything to her wheelchair?”
Elena was puzzled with Sarah’s actions. If she did not feel guilty, why would she tell them to stop the dig? If she was guilty, why would she tell anyone her motive?
Elena did not comprehend what was in Sarah’s thoughts.
“I did not kill the old madam.”
Sarah was genuinely agitated. Michael’s decision to dig up the lake could have been made the night before or even that morning itself; no one had received any news before that.
Even the team at the dig told her that they had only received a work request that morning.
Sarah did not understand why Eldest Young Master Williams decided to do that. However, she knew that Elena was the only person who could stop him.
Everyone in the Williams family had known about the fight between the old master and the Eldest Young Master Williams.
“Elena, there’s no way I can explain it to you. But if you can persuade Michael to stop the dig, I can give you whatever you want.”
“I want nothing.” Elena stared at her.
Elena was confident that the old madam’s death was not an accident.
“Who killed the old madam?” She walked toward Sarah and grabbed her by her jacket. “You know, don’t you? Tell me who it is! Why did he do that?”
“No one! It was an accident!” Sarah pushed her away forcefully. Her stern look had disappeared, and she had only hopelessness on her face.
“Elena, I’m begging you, please do not continue to pursue this matter! I’m begging you, alright?”
Elena kept her cool. “Only if you tell me who killed the old madam!”
“I don’t know! No one!” Sarah almost went mad, she grabbed Elena’s shoulders and shook with all her might. “If this continues, you will get innocent people killed! You will get him killed!”
“Who?” Elena frowned. Why was she so agitated? Who did she want to protect?
“Was it Dylan? Was it him?” Her fingers turned cold. How was that possible, though?
Why would Second Young Master Williams do that to the old madam without any reason? It was impossible! What was his grudge with her?
“Did he kill the old madam?”
“What in the bloody hell are you talking about? How is it possible for Dylan to kill the old madam? Are you crazy?”
“Then why are you so agitated?” Elena pushed her hands away. “The old madam’s death was not an accident. It needs a detailed investigation.”
“Then tell me, how are you so sure that her death was a homicide?” Sarah’s eyes made Elena even more perplexed. She did not understand the thoughts in her head.
Was she not supposed to find a way to destroy any evidence that she had left behind if she was the murderer? Not only did she not do that, but she was also there to beg for a coverup. That did not look like something a killer would do; hence Elena was sure that she was not the killer.
What was she so nervous then?
Was it because she knew who the murderer was, or perhaps, she knew about the secrets in the lake?
Elena’s heart pounded. She did not know why, but she was frightened. She quickly made her way toward the door.
Just as she reached the door, Sarah suddenly jumped at her and pulled her backward. She was so strong; it seemed like she had used all of her might.
It caught Elena by surprise, and she fell onto the floor. With a loud thud, the back of her head hit something hard, and she felt a sudden wave of dizziness.
‘Ouch!’
She covered her head and felt something warm and sticky flowed through her fingers.
Sarah did not expect that she would injure with just one pull!
Elena had a bloodied wound in the back of her head!
The crimson color formed a small puddle on the floor.
Sarah was shocked and dumbfounded at the turn of events. Then she panicked for a moment, and finally, she calmed down.
“Tell me, what did you see on the side of the lake? Why are you so sure that the old madam’s drowning was not an accident?”
Elena was in so much pain that she could hardly make a sound. However, her head gradually felt heavier, and she unconsciously opened her mouth and said, “You…tied water weeds on her wheelchair…” She sneered as her body temperature started to drop.
Her head was in so much pain, and her consciousness had started to blur.
However, she still sneered at the other woman.
“Sarah, no matter if you’re the murderer, you…are related to them. This time, you…can’t escape.”
“I see… I see…”
Sarah was surprised that she did not feel any panic nor fear. She sat on the floor and looked at the bloodied Elena. Suddenly, she laughed.
“Why did you have to force me? Isn’t it nice to live together peacefully? Why did it have to come to this?” She seemed a little out of her mind, perhaps a little despaired.
Finally, she stood up and walked toward the bed. She pulled the late old madam’s blanket and used it to cover Elena’s body.
“Elena, it was you who forced me to do this!”
