Chapter 306 The Person by Your Side

Book:The Reborn Wife Published:2024-5-1

Elena turned around sharply. She could not believe it!
A truck had hit a tree on the side of the road at the other end of the alley. It finally came to a stop after it struck the tree.
Somewhere on the same street, Evie laid motionless in a pool of blood. The truck driver panicked when he got down from his truck; he had blood on his forehead. He walked to Evie, and he looked so anxious and did not know what to do about the accident.
Elena felt as if the world was spinning, her body went limp, and she almost dropped to the ground. Caleb was also frightened; his hands and feet were immediately cold. Fortunately, he could still support Elena before she hit the ground. Elena’s condition was far worse than his. Her hands and feet were cold, and he could hardly feel any warmth in her body.
“Go…have a look.” Her voice sounded like she was whizzing; it was indescribably low and hoarse.
Caleb finally collected himself and helped Elena walk to the other end of the alley.
It seemed like someone had called the police. They were probably not far from the hospital, so the ambulance had arrived almost immediately. Elena watched as paramedics checked on Evie and as they tried to resuscitate her. Eventually, they covered her with a piece of white cloth.
Elena could not take it anymore, and she slid to the ground.
Caleb tried to support her, but he buckled under her weight. Her face was as white as paper, and it worried him. “Elena, don’t panic. It was an accident. It was only an accident!”
The truck driver had been taken away. It was an accident and not a murder or a conspiracy hit-and-run. They saw with their eyes that it was only an accident.
“Accident. Did you hear that? It was an accident. It has nothing to do with us.”
Caleb supported her and finally helped her up.
“Let’s head back. Don’t panic; I’ll take you home.”
Elena covered her stomach with her hand; waves of intense pain attacked her abdomen. She still trembled when she got into the car. They had been talking only a few moments before that. Then, Evie was no longer alive. Had it really been an accident? Was there such a coincidence?
“Listen to me, it’s just an accident. Don’t panic!”
Caleb was afraid that she could not handle it. He tried to comfort her as he drove. “There’s no need for panic. Nobody wants it to happen, but no one could predict an accident or control it.”
“Caleb, please drive carefully.” Elena closed her eyes. Her face was still and motionless like the dead sea.
If her hands were not trembling, one would think that she had fallen asleep. Caleb could not find any other words to comfort her. Elena reminded her to drive carefully, and that was what he did. He could only concentrate on his driving.
Accident? It did seem like it. However, that was such a fluke. It happened so coincidentally that one could not help but be panicked…
Elena finally fell asleep when they arrived at Sharp Corporation. She did not even realize that she had fallen asleep. Everyone was still busy in the office. Elena gathered her thoughts and returned to the office, where she spent the whole evening with the scripts.
The company had dozens of teams, and they were able to keep up with the schedule thus far.
Lois and Layla did very well with the comic manuscripts and script writing contests. Their productions should be able to meet the basic requirements of the library by the time the APP went live the month after that. However, that was only the basic requirements. They would still have to work on the expansion.
Henry was in a very important meeting that day, and he had to work overnight in the office. That was why Elena did not see him the entire evening.
At around nine in the evening, Henry texted her. [Are you still in the office? Wait for me. I will pick you up in half an hour.]
[OK.] Elena replied.
Just as she was just about to put down the phone, it beeped to signal an incoming new message. It was a text from an unknown number.
She clicked on the message, and she flinched when she saw its content. [Don’t continue with your investigation. Otherwise, the following person to get hurt would be someone next to you.]
Someone next to her! Who did the stranger refer to?
“Caleb?” Elena jumped out of her seat and made her way to the office of the development team.
“Where did Caleb go?” Aryan was there, Layla and Lois were also there but where were Caleb and Rufus?
Rufus did not know anything about her plans, but Caleb did! What did that text message mean? Was Caleb in danger?
“Caleb was hungry, and so he went out to get some food with Rufus. They are bringing us supper too.”
They had worked for an entire evening, so everyone was tired. Caleb and Rufus wanted to go out and relax for a short while. However, why did Elena look so horrified?
Layla also became nervous. “What happened, Elena? Did something happen?”
Elena did not want to scare them. She did not mention a word about the text message.
She shook her head, but she immediately dialed Caleb’s number. Unfortunately, the call did not go through! Where were they? Why could she not get through to him?
“Elena, what is going on? Is Caleb in trouble?”
Elena’s complexion terrified Layla. Some of their friends had begun to stare at Elena. The more Layla looked at her, the more she felt that something was wrong.
“Don’t scare us, Elena. What the hell is going on? Tell us!”
“Someone sent me an anonymous text message saying that they would target my friends.”
Elena could not explain more about that. She immediately called Luacs. Regardless of the time, Luacs would always pick up her calls.
“Elena, are you looking for me?”
“Luacs, where are you now?” They had not seen Luacs much of late, and they did not know why he had been so busy.
“I’m on my way back to Sharp Corporation. I’ll be there soon.”
“Luacs, listen to me. I received an anonymous threatening message. I’m not sure if someone has targeted Caleb. He and Rufus went out to get some food from nearby.”
“Understood. I’ll go and take a look now. Don’t worry. I will bring them back immediately.”
Luacs hung up the phone curtly. He was probably on his way to look for Caleb.
“We can’t just stay here. Let’s go out and try to find them.”
They would be stronger in number. If they had to fight some bad people, then at least they could scare them off.
“Okay!” Aryan said nothing more as he grabbed the fruit knife from the side table. “Let’s go!”
“This…” Lois was terrified when she saw the fruit knife in his hand. “Are we…really going to cut people?”
It was a terrible sight to appear on the street with a fruit knife in one’s hand. The police might even detain them for that.
“What about this?” Someone had left some baseball bats in the corner, and Aryan had picked one up.
“Let’s go.” Elena picked up another baseball bat and walked out of the door.
Layla and Lois did not know what to bring with them so they could only follow through the door.
As soon as they reached the lobby, a handsome man in white casual trousers approached them.
When he saw the baseball bat in Elena’s hand, Henry frowned in displeasure. “It’s late. Are you guys starting a fight?”
