Chapter 305 At Least She Knew The Truth

Book:The Reborn Wife Published:2024-5-1

“Nothing!” Evie wanted to escape.
However, Caleb was in front of her, and he completely cut off her escape route. She tried to push her way through him several times but to no avail. She was no match for Caleb.
Finally, Elena’s patience wore out. She simply said, “You can go, but tonight, your boyfriend will learn about what had happened when you were 17 years old.”
“What evidence do you have?” Evie was not convinced.
“We know where your daughter is. Do you think that I would have a problem finding out about the other things?” Caleb sneered.
Evie was dispirited. She stared at Elena, and her eyes were moist with tears.
“Why are you so mean? Why do you have to force me? You are pushing me to my death!”
“When you and Ava lied to the old madam, why didn’t you think that you were mean too?”
Elena might seem like she was heartless at times, but she could not believe how cold she could be.
“Go on and keep your secrets. I have many ways to make sure that you’ll live miserably for the rest of your life.”
“Elena! You’re a vicious woman!”
“Who is the vicious woman? I think you have the answer to that!”
Evie was in despair; she felt like a deflated balloon. Even though she did not want to admit it, she knew that Elena would have hunted her if she had not done all those things. She was no match for them, not Elena, not Ava, or any other names that she did not know.
“I can’t tell you.” She looked at Elena, and suddenly, she dropped to her knees.
“Young Madam, please let me go. I can’t tell you!”
“Why can’t you tell me? What have you done?”
“I can’t say. I really can’t.”
Evie took a breath and started to sob. “If I tell you, they would never let my daughter go. My daughter would be in danger.”
Elena squeezed her palms tightly. Those people had a card up their sleeves!
Evie wiped her tears and said as she tried to choke back her tears, “Even if I tell you the truth now, it’s useless. You have been dismissed from the Williams family. What can you do about it?
“Just give up, Young Madam. Eldest Young Master Williams and Ava are together now. He doesn’t want you anymore, and you can’t fight against them!”
Evie did not mean to mock Elena; she only addressed the facts. If a man had changed his mind and no longer believed in you, what more could you say? Besides, Evie knew that there was someone powerful behind Ava. What could Elena do by herself? Even if she had her friend, what could she do against influential people? It was a hopeless battle, and Evie knew that. Unfortunately, she did not know that Elena was not one to give up so easily.
“Don’t worry about whether I can fight them or not. All you need to do is to tell me what happened that day.”
“Would you keep this a secret if I were to tell you?”
Evie stood up and looked at her. “I can tell you about it, but I will not go to the Williams family to testify for you.
“My daughter’s life is in the hands of those people. Even if you force me, I won’t go. I hope you can understand that.”
“Well, I won’t force you to testify for me before I can promise to keep your daughter safe.”
Elena wanted to know what had happened that day.
“You have to promise me…”
“I promised that I would not tell your boyfriend about this.”
Evie was relieved to hear that from Elena. Even though she was still hesitant, she finally decided to speak.
“That day, Ava told me to push the old madam to the backyard and pretend to have eavesdropped on Ava’s mother talking to someone on the phone.”
“Grace?” Had she not been dismissed by Henry? When did she get back?
“Yes, my task was to push the old madam to the place and let her overhear the conversation.”
“What was the conversation about?” Since the old lady ‘heard’ it, then Evie must have heard it as well.
Evie said, “The general content was to thank the person for helping her and to mention that you are her biological daughter. She acknowledged Ava as her daughter so that you replace her identity in the future.” That was all Evie heard.
“Anyway, it meant that you and Ava had exchanged identities. The other party knew about it, but they kept it a secret from the old madam to confuse her.”
Evie did not know much about the incident, but she played a small part in it. She did not know about the identity that Ava had fought for. Anyway, Ava gave her some money and asked her to monitor the old madam’s every move. They threatened her with her daughter so that she would do as they say. Evie had been relieved when Elena dismissed her, but she never thought that Elena would hunt her down.
“I only know so much. Ava would get me to report everything about the old madam to her.
“However, there was nothing much to report. The old madam would usually spend her time in her room, or she would be at the garden.”
Then, she looked at Elena unwillingly and helplessly.
“Elena, remember what you have promised me. Can I go now?”
Evie wanted to leave, but Caleb reached out to block her again. Elena shook her head.
“Let her go. It is useless to keep her if she is not willing to testify as a witness.”
After all, the life of an innocent little girl was involved. It was not a good time to badger her. At least, Elena knew what had happened that day.
Caleb was reluctant to let her go. They found the woman, and all they had to do was to make her admit what she had done. If she could testify in front of Eldest Young Master Williams, then he might trust Elena a little more. He could not bear it when Eldest Young Master Williams believed Ava but not Elena!
“Let her go.” Elena turned around and walked toward the other end of the alley.
Caleb had no choice but to let Evie go. Then he caught up with Elena.
“Elena, are you sure you don’t want to get her to testify in front of Eldest Young Master Williams?”
That was a great opportunity! Evie had finally agreed to spell out the truth, it would have taken only a little more effort to get her to testify for Elena. She might have agreed to it if they insisted.
“Did you not hear her? Those people threatened her with the life of her daughter.”
Evie had agreed to tell them so that she could keep her boyfriend. Elena knew that she would not have agreed to it if it would endanger her daughter’s life. No mother would agree to that. Evie would never put the life of her daughter at stake, even if she were to lose her boyfriend. Therefore, why should they continue to force her?
Furthermore, Elena could not guarantee the safety of Evie’s daughter. The mastermind and the people behind Ava were cruel enough to lay their hands on the old madam, and they might not value the life of a little girl.
“Let’s go.” She was a little depressed, but at least she had learned the truth.
Caleb sighed in relief and said, “Well, now, we really have nothing else…”
Before he could finish his sentence, a sudden loud bang rang through the alley behind them…
