After their class, Elena and her friends were on their way back to their office at Sharp Corporation when her phone rang. It was Levi.
Her heart trembled as she answered the call. “Hello, Levi?”
Levi had taken the DNA report from her that morning. Could he have already compared it with the old madam’s DNA information in the hospital database?
She was so nervous that her hand shook as she waited in breathless suspension.
“Elena…” Layla wanted to approach her, but Caleb held her back.
“Don’t interrupt her, it must be something important.”
Caleb thought about it for a while and then turned to look at Aryan. “Luacs is not around today, so please drive them to Sharp Corporation. I need to go somewhere with Elena.”
“You are going with her?” Layla looked unhappy. Why did Caleb know what Elena was up to but not her?
“We just have something we need to do.” Caleb nudged Layla. “Go on. We will be back soon.”
Layla was reluctant, but she did not want to create any trouble for her friends. After they left, Caleb hurried toward Elena.
Elena disconnected the call and looked at Caleb. “I need to go see Levi.”
“I know. I drove here today. Let’s go.”
The company gave each of them a new car so that they could move around comfortably.
“Okay, let’s go to UBC Coffee.”
UBC Coffee was not far from their campus. Caleb drove, and they arrived in just a few short minutes.
As she walked into the cafe, something flashed through Elena’s mind. When was the last time she was there? It was when Ava had asked her out. She remembered that Ava had acted weird that day. She invited Elena out without a real purpose, and Elena remembered that she had an odd feeling that day. Ava looked like she wanted to do something desperately, but what was it? When did it happen? Had Ava known about her identity then?
“Elena, why are you just standing here and not going in?”
Elena felt as if she was about to remember something, but Caleb interrupted her train of thoughts. Some images flowed through her mind like a deck of cards, but she could no longer recall any of them. She shook her head before she looked at Caleb. “I need to speak to Levi about something.”
“I understand. I’ll wait for you at another table.”
Caleb had already seen Levi. He took a table further away and signaled the waiter to take his order.
Elena walked toward Levi. Every step she took felt more burdensome than the other, but she looked forward to their meeting. It was a complicated feeling. She was anxious, nervous, uneasy, panicked, and excited—all at the same time.
Those feelings rattled inside her, and it made her uncomfortable. The 20 steps of distance felt like a century-long. Finally, she sat down opposite Levi.
“Here, drink something first.” Levi had ordered a drink for her.
Elena took it and drank half a cup in one go; she could not taste the coffee at all.
“Levi, did you find out about anything? Have you got the result?”
Levi looked at her and saw that she did not even bother to wipe off the coffee stain at the corner of her lips. He pulled a tissue and handed it to her as he softly said, “Here, wipe your mouth first.”
Elena immediately wiped the corners of her lips several times, and she held onto the paper towel tightly in her hand. Levi could see that she was very nervous. He hesitated before he took the report out of the file. That was the report she gave him that morning—the DNA result for herself and the old madam.
“Levi?” What did that mean? Elena did not understand it.
Levi took another document from the file. “This is the DNA information that the old madam left in the hospital database. I don’t know if you can understand it.”
Elena got increasingly flustered, and her fingers trembled. She took the two reports. It was a more detailed report that came out from the test that she did. In fact, she did not study it in detail because she did not know much about genetics. Anyway, the final results were the same.
However, Levi said, “Miss Elena, you should compare the two DNA results.”
Elena bit her lower lip. She held the two reports and scrutinized them carefully. Many of the things were indeed incomprehensible to her. There were too many English letters, and they were too complicated. She knew every single word of them, but when they were strung together, they made no sense to her, and her head spun when she looked at them. One thing was clear; there were many different readings. What did it mean, though?
“This is the DNA information that you left in the hospital. I have also requested a copy of that. You can compare them yourself.”
Levi took out another document and gave it to her. Elena took the copy of her DNA information and compared it with the information on the report. They were the same thing!
Even though she could not understand them, it was apparent that they were basically the same information.
“What?” Something tugged at her heart, and she felt panicked.
“What do you mean? Levi, tell me, what does this mean? I don’t understand it…”
“Miss Elena, there might be something wrong with this report.”
“Are you saying that the information on the report did not belong to the old madam, and I somehow fabricated them?”
Elena stood up abruptly as she slapped her hands on the table. She was in such a flurry that she could hardly speak.
“No, no! Absolutely not!”
“Miss Elena, I know it is difficult for you to accept it. However, I got this information from the hospital’s system, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.”
Levi seemed to have expected that she would have such a reaction as he immediately stood up to help her sit down. With a violent wave of her hand, Elena shook his hands away.
“Are you saying that I made up this report to deceive you and Eldest Young Master Williams?”
“Miss Elena, please don’t be emotional. Let’s sit down and talk calmly. I believe that you won’t…”
“What’s the point of you believing in me? Facts speak louder than words. You think that I have fabricated the report!”
How could it be? How could it be fake? That was the old madam’s blood sample in the hospital.
How could it be fake? If it were false, then why did the test show that they were related? However, she did not believe Levi would lie to her. Why would Levi lie to her with false information? She was there to expose Ava’s sham, and she was sure that Levi would never side with Ava anyway. So, why? Why?
“Elena…” Yang noticed that something was wrong, so he immediately went to her. He held onto Elena as she crumbled onto the floor. “What’s going on?”
“The information that they got from the hospital and the one we have on Grandmother is not the same.”
Elena did not know who she should trust, but she knew that Caleb was on her side. They did the test together, and they also got the report together, so Caleb knew the truth!
“Impossible!” Caleb looked at Levi as he said in a resolute tone, “The sample belonged to the old madam. How could the information be different? What the hell is going on?”
