After Kevin and Bella got off work from the office, he looked at the time and said to her, “I want to go to the hospital to see Lena. Are you going?”
Bella nodded, “Yeah, but I want to go home first and cook something nice for her to bring over.”
“Then why don’t I go over first?”
“Yeah, okay.”
The two of them parted ways. One headed home and the other rushed to the hospital.
When Kevin arrived at the hospital, he arrived at his sister’s hospital room and saw her sleeping, Alvin sitting by her bedside. He quietly asked, “Is Lena okay?”
“Yes, pretty good. The doctor said she’s recovering nicely.”
A hint of gratitude flashed in Kevin’s eyes and he pointed outside, “Let’s go to the rooftop and talk.”
Alvin skimmed a glance at the sleeping lady on the bed and nodded, “Good.”
They left the ward one after the other and headed straight towards the rooftop of the hospital. In the silent ward, Lena slowly opened her eyes. She actually hadn’t fallen asleep yet.
The sudden appearance of her brother made her heart quite uneasy. She always felt that Alvin would easily accept her feelings, and there must be some hidden plot that she didn’t know about.
She lifted the blanket, put on her slippers, and followed out.
The summer night air was filled with the smell of heat and humidity, and there were cries of mockingbirds everywhere in her ears, and occasionally a cool breeze blew by, but only a slight coolness could be felt.
Kevin was in the darkness, gazing at Alvin, and spoke in a deep voice, “Lena’s surgery was a complete success. Thanks to you. Thank you.”
“It’s okay. Although I don’t have a blood relationship with her, in my heart, I have already considered her as my own sister.”
“I’ll send her to study abroad after she’s released from the hospital, and you’ll be able to get away with it all when I refuse to let you date with her on the grounds of the disparity in social status.”
Alvin nodded, “Yeah.”
They were silent for a few seconds, and Kevin continued, “Don’t you really like her? Isn’t there even a little?”
“Lena is a good girl, but the feelings can barely be forced. The affection of a brother for his sister can’t evolve into love, no matter how hard I try.”
Kevin sighed deeply, “Hey, well, it’s already benevolent for you to promise us to accept Lena’s feelings for the time being and let her get through this safely. We shouldn’t ask for more excessive demands from you.”
As soon as he finished, the phone in his pocket rang, “Hello? Which …. oh, Mr. Chapman, now? …. Okay, good, then I’ll go over now …. Okay, then see you later.”
Kevin hung up the phone, patted Alvin’s shoulder, and nodded meaningfully, “Mr. Chapman from the Harper Group asked me to talk about the land in the Mosley Road. I’ll go there.”
“Alright.”
Alvin stood in place without moving. Kevin turned around and walked away. He left in such a hurry that he didn’t notice a small, trembling body standing in the shadows.
Yes, Lena was trembling, but she didn’t cry. A man only shed tears when she was sad. When the heart was numb, a man would forget everything, including the sadness and the tears.
She dragged her wooden steps forward, ten paces away from him, and called out softly, “Alvin.”
Alvin was shocked, thinking it was his own illusion, but when he turned back in shock, he found that it wasn’t an illusion but Lena was standing right in front of him closely.
“Lena, why are you here ….”
He gasped, very worried if she had already heard the conversation with Kevin just now.
“It’s too stuffy in the ward, so I came out for some air.”
“How long have you been out? Did you just get out?”
Alvin asked with flickering eyes.
Lena looked at him with an expressionless face and replied word for word, “It’s been a long time. I came up here with you guys.”
For a whole half a minute, Alvin couldn’t say a word. They just stared at each other like that blankly, and from Lena’s eyes, he saw an unspeakable heartbreak.
“So …. have you heard everything?”
“Yeah.”
She nodded gently, staring at the ground woodenly, “Although I always knew you didn’t like me when you told me that you would try to date me, I still believed that you were smitten with me because of my persistence. But I never thought that in the end, you would still be with me because of my illness …. ”
At this point, her voice choked up. She was really really sad.
Sniffing, she raised her head, her eyes with tears shining with despair in the night, “Thank you for your company this time. I’m very happy.”
After saying that, she was leaving.
Alvin was sad, pulling her wrist, and was about to say something, but she looked away slightly, “Don’t worry. I’ll be fine. I won’t give up my own life because of the demise of the relationship. I’m not such a person. You know that.”
In the moment of turning away, Lena’s tears finally fell down. It was a mess, but also it was very fortunate to have kept the last of her dignity intact.
The day passed quickly, and Kevin and Freya’s date started at the Gold Club.
They faced each other, and Kevin asked her, “What would you like to drink?”
“Iced tea.”
He instructed the waiter, “Two cups of iced tea.”
When the waiter exited, the sound of each other’s breathing was all that was left in the clubhouse box.
“Tell me, what will it take to destroy the evidence of my parents’ guilt?”
Freya didn’t say anything, but bowed her head and took out a file bag from her bag, “Here’s all the evidence. All of them are the originals. Examine them.”
He took it and examined it one by one. Most of it was the statements taken by the people who were ordered to do so back then. There were also many photos and a CD of the recording. He nodded, “What’s the condition?”
“It’s unconditional.”
Kevin was a bit startled, probably not quite understanding what she meant, “What do you mean?”
Freya looked at him leisurely, “In your heart, Kevin, am I such a profit-oriented person? Have you never thought that I would give you this evidence because I love you?”
“So you’re saying that you’re giving me this evidence unconditionally, right?”
“Yes.”
“I hadn’t really thought about it, and if it had been you three years ago, it might have been possible. But I wouldn’t have dared to have such confidence in you now.”
“Why? What have I ever done to annoy you, Kevin?”
“I don’t get annoyed with you, but I just don’t think in the same way as yours.”
“Is it because of the last time I questioned you about why you took the blame for Bella?”
“It’s not just this one thing, but other aspects that can manifest themselves as well.”
“Which aspects make us different? You can tell us all about it.”
Kevin sighed, “Forget it. It’s no longer a past lover’s relationship anyway, so it’s useless to say so much.”
“You say it so I can change it.”
He looked at her askance, “You have to be able to go with the flow.”
Freya smiled sarcastically, her eyes shining with glistening tears, “Okay, I know, thank you for the words.”
She picked up the iced tea in front of her, took a big sip, got up, and said, “I’m leaving, goodbye.”
Kevin stared at her back thoughtfully for a moment, got up, and left the clubhouse as well. Out of the door of the clubhouse, he was first stunned, then spoke, “Why didn’t you leave?”
“I’m waiting for the car.”
“Do you want me to give you a ride?”
“No.”
He didn’t say anything more, walked straight towards his car, pulled the door open and sat in, started the engine, and was about to leave when he suddenly saw in the reflection mirror that Freya was in panic and fear surrounded by four or five men.
Kevin frowned and he was struggling slightly, not wanting to see her die and not wanting to get too involved with Freya.
While hesitating, he saw one of the men slap Freya so hard that Freya fell to the ground, tears falling down from her eyes.
He was unable to stand it, pushed the door open, and walked over, bellowing, “What are you guys doing?”
Several men looked back in unison, and the man at the head of the group snorted, “What for? This little slut’s mother still owed us a huge gambling debt back then that she hasn’t paid, and now she’s still unwilling to pay it. Shouldn’t a daughter pay her mother’s debts?”
Kevin looked gloomy and questioned, “How much does she owe you?”
“With the interest for three years, it’s exactly eight and a half million.”
“If you return that slap just now, I’ll give you seventeen million.”
A few men were all stunned and hadn’t realized what was going on when Kevin had walked up to the head man, and slapped him in the face. He took out a check from his bag, signed his name and stamped it, and threw it to him, “Twenty million. Keep the change.”
The man touched his face that had been beaten, looked him up and down, and knew he was someone with identity, so he gnashed and said, “For the sake of this check I won’t bother with you.” He looked askance at Freya on the ground, “It seems that it’s good to be a pretty woman. There’s a man on the street willing to pay back the money. You serve this master well and will have a good life.”
As soon as he spoke, Kevin punched him. Even though he no longer had any love for Freya, he couldn’t bear to see his former lover be humiliated like this.
This punch announced the start of the war, and several men swarmed forward to fight him. Kevin had learned judo, and he wouldn’t be too disadvantaged to deal with a few rude men, but it was inevitable that the fight would consume energy after a long time. The leading man took advantage of his inattention and smashed an empty wine bottle at him from the roadside …
Ah…
With a scream, Freya fell into Kevin’s arms. At the critical moment, she blocked the bottle for Kevin. The blood flowed from her forehead to Kevin’s shirt, and soon, Kevin’s shirt was dyed red.
The few men who saw that there seemed to be a murder, scared to run away. Kevin anxiously cried out, “Freya? Freya?”
The police car had been whistling, but it was late. Kevin didn’t care too much, carrying Freya to the hospital.
It was lucky that Freya was not seriously hurt. The vulnerability wasn’t hit by the bottle. She just got scratched and did not hurt the brain nerve. After doing a CT scan, the wound was carefully bandaged, and the doctor said she could be discharged.
