The little spoon in Summer’s hand slipped and dropped on the table. She looked over at Leonardo, wide-eyed. She had never seen Leonardo so obedient.
“Can you say that again?” Summer gripped his sleeve and looked at him with her head tilted sideways.
He looked back at her, furrowing his brows with impatience. “Say what?”
As if her hand was disgusting, he took her hand off his sleeve. In the eyes of others, it would seem as though Leonardo disliked her touch.
However, Summer immediately knew why he did that; Leonardo was embarrassed.
Whenever he did not know how to express himself, he would follow his instincts and evade her eyes.
She suddenly felt like she had found a new and correct way to interact with Leonardo.
Carl, who was sitting across from them, could no longer take it.
Slamming his chopsticks on the table, he sighed. “Now I know why that rascal, Warren didn’t want to come. You guys make me feel like a third wheel.
“No wonder he didn’t want to come,” he lamented again.
Leonardo drew Summer into his arms. “I forgot to tell you that we’re getting married. You’ll be my best man.”
Bombarded by the continuous shocking news, Carl felt like dying.
“Were-Weren’t you guys just quarreling a few days ago? Why are you suddenly getting married?”
Carl looked at Summer. “Have you thought it through, Summer?”
Leonardo interrupted. “You may be my best man, but don’t forget my wedding gift. It can be a house, car, plane, a piece of land, or cash—I’m okay with either. I’m not picky.”
Carl did not dare to open his mouth again.
…
Carl had one too many after he was beset by all the things he heard.
Leonardo asked the waitstaff to carry Carl to the guest room upstairs while he and Summer left the restaurant.
Summer was still worried about Carl when they entered the car.
“Are you sure that Carl will be okay alone?”
“He owns half of the Golden Cauldron’s shares. Everyone knows he’s the boss. No one will do anything to him.” Leonardo looked a little unhappy. “Please stop worrying about other men next time.”
“Can’t I, even though they are friends?”
“No.”
Summer pressed her lips together. There were still some things that stood between her and Leonardo.
She could understand why he did not want her to have any contact with Stanley. But this was Carl! Leonardo still did not allow her to show any concern for him.
He sounded so serious; he did not even look like he was kidding.
Carl had been Leonardo’s best friend for years.
She knew that Leonardo trusted Carl. Since he trusted Carl and knew that she was concerned about him as a friend, why was it not allowed?
Suddenly, what Tim had told her came to mind: Leonardo had some character flaws. That was indeed the case.
If Leonardo continued to carry this flaw with him and got angry at the slightest things such as talking to the opposite sex, what should she do?
Summer probably remained silent for too long, and Leonardo suddenly asked, “What’s on your mind?”
She blinked to conceal her emotions. “I’m thinking of Rosie,” she said with a smile.
“She’s at home. Stay with us if you miss her.” He smiled too.
“Okay.”
…
Summer had agreed to move to his place, but she did not bring her stuff with her. Based on her thought process, she already had things in his place, so she could just use them.
On the contrary, Leonardo was not very happy. “Why don’t you move everything back to my place? Are you still thinking about moving out?”
“Your place has everything that I need. It doesn’t matter if I move things over to your place or not.”
He just raised his brows and said nothing.
Arriving at Leonardo’s mansion, Summer could already hear Rosie’s voice the moment she stepped through the main door.
Rosie immediately spotted Summer and excitedly ran toward her when she entered the living room.
However, Rosie stopped in her tracks, her face sinking as she stared at Summer with wide-open eyes.
She seemed to be angry, or rather, she felt hurt.
Children had good memory. Summer could roughly guess what she was sulking about. She had promised to get Rosie prior to attending the party last time.
So, Summer went up to Rosie. “Hi, Rosie.”
Rosie glanced at her and humphed. She looked away, as though she did not want to talk to Summer.
“It was Mommy’s fault. Mommy was supposed to get you that day, but something came up. That’s why I couldn’t come and get you. It was my fault.”
She observed Rosie’s expression and reached out to hold her hand, which felt so soft like it was boneless.
Rosie was too small to understand what went on between the adults.
Despite that, at the end of the day, Mommy was still the closest person to her. Rosie might have looked angry, but when Summer talked to her so gently, she could no longer hold back her emotions, and she began to sob.
Summer carried her in her arms. “It was my fault. Don’t cry, Rosie.”
“I’ve been waiting so long…” Before Rosie could finish her sentence, she started bawling.
She felt hurt. Rosie really liked Summer, whose heart almost shattered when she saw Rosie crying. It was a feeling that she had never gotten from Leonardo.
She should not have gone to the so-called party.
If she had not attended the party, Rosie would not have felt hurt and cried. She carried Rosie in her arms, gently patting and comforting her.
Leonardo was standing in the distance, looking on. No one knew what he was thinking.
He suddenly turned around and went outside as he rummaged through his body, trying to find a cigarette.
A bodyguard with a keen eye immediately handed him a stick. “Here you go, Young Master.”
Leonardo took the cigarette and put it in his mouth while the bodyguard lit it up for him.
He put the cigarette out after only smoking half of it.
“Do you want to light it up, Young Master?” The bodyguard asked as he did not see Leonardo put the cigarette out.
“No need.”
Leonardo turned to go back inside.
By then, Summer had coaxed Rosie to sleep.
The little girl was still holding on to Summer’s clothes and sniveling even in her sleep. She appeared pitiful and adorable at the same time.
Hearing footsteps behind her, Summer looked back and put a finger to her mouth to make the “shhh” gesture. She made sure that Rosie was asleep before she rose to her feet and headed to her bedroom with the little girl still in her arms.
Leonardo approached and wanted to take Rosie from her hands, but Summer stepped aside and shook her head. “I can do it myself.”
