Summer looked around the room, making sure that there was only one bed. “What do you mean?”
There was only one bed in the room. Would she sleep on the sofa if not on the bed?
Leonardo said nothing. He requested an extra duvet from housekeeping, carried it, and put it on the sofa.
Ignoring the expression on Summer’s face, he turned and walked into the bathroom.
Summer looked on, rooted to the spot for a few moments before she came to her senses—Leonardo was going to sleep on the sofa.
They had been sleeping together while they were in the mountains. Now what? He wanted to sleep in a separate bed?
She found it funny.
Not long after, Leonardo finished his shower and emerged from the bathroom with only a towel wrapped around his waist.
Instead of talking to him, she got to her feet and entered the bathroom.
Halfway through her shower, she heard two knocks on the door.
She leaned over and listened in. Leonardo was walking over to answer the door.
When she came out after her shower, Leonardo had changed into his pajamas. He was sitting at the table and fiddling with a laptop.
The room was not large, so the moment she turned around, she saw a set of ladies pajamas neatly placed on the bed.
By the looks of the color, it seemed to match Leonardo’s pajamas.
Then she heard Leonardo’s voice. “Tim bought it.”
Summer looked over and noticed that he was seated in the same posture. His eyes were glued to the laptop’s screen, and his fingers were tapping on the keyboard.
If there had not been only two of them there, she would have thought that Leonardo was not talking to her.
“Thank you.”
She took the pajamas and walked back into the bathroom.
Once she was back out, she gave Jessica a call.
When she arrived in the county city earlier, she had tried to call Jessica, but the automatic voice told her that the user was not in an area with coverage. She wondered if the call would get through now.
After she pressed “Call”, nothing happened for two seconds. But then, she heard a “Doo—”. The call went through.
It rang for several moments before Jessica picked it up.
“Summer? Are you all right?” Jessica sounded worried.
“I’m okay. How about you?” Summer got in bed as she spoke.
Leaning against the headboard, she briefly told Jessica about what happened during the past few days.
The terrain in the village that Jessica stayed in was too hilly, so there was no place where helicopters could land. As such, she was still stranded for the moment.
The road that led to the village was destroyed, and it would take a while before it could be restored.
At least Jessica was safe.
Summer could finally breathe a sigh of relief.
Although Jessica would not be coming back so soon, with Carl taking care of her, Summer did not have to say more. Thus, she was not going to wait for her in the county city.
“I’ll see you back in Hoover City.”
“Sure, see you there.”
The line went dead, and Summer looked in Leonardo’s direction. He was still sitting in front of the computer.
His face appeared solemn; he had to be working. The pajamas could not hide his powerful personal aura, though.
“I’ll go to sleep now, Leonardo.”
He glanced back at her. “The light switches are by the bed. You mean you want me to help you turn off the light?” His voice was just as distant as his expression.
She took a deep breath. “No, I’ll do it myself,” she said at warp speed. After that, she reached out to flick the switch and lay down in bed.
The room plunged into darkness, and the only light source was the faint blue glow emitted by the laptop screen in front of Leonardo.
Summer squinted, allowing her eyes to adapt to the darkness. Only then did she look in Leonardo’s direction.
She had wanted to ask him to get some rest earlier. Work could wait, and he could continue back at home.
However, Leonardo’s response had killed the thought.
After some tossing and turning in bed, she finally fell asleep.
When she woke up, it was already morning.
She opened her eyes and saw Leonardo asleep on the sofa, which was not very large. It was incomparable to the sofa in the president suite that Leonardo usually stayed in. He was sleeping on his side with one hand acting as a pillow beneath his head and the other on his chest. By the looks of things, it was not a very comfortable sleeping position.
Half of the duvet was on the floor.
Summer got out of bed and walked over to pick up the duvet.
As soon as she draped the duvet over him, he opened his eyes all of a sudden and grabbed her hand in alarm.
There was eye contact. Leonardo stared at her for two seconds and discovered that it was her. Only then did he let go of her hand.
She pulled back her hand and said, “The duvet was on the floor.”
Leonardo sat up, took a look at the duvet, and whisked it to the side. Then he got up and went into the bathroom.
Summer took a deep breath; it left a bad taste in her mouth.
Had they not been on good terms when they were at the elderly man’s house?
She could vividly feel that Leonardo was much closer to her during those few days in the elderly man’s house.
But now, he had changed again, turning cold.
…
After breakfast, they headed to the airport to fly back to Hoover City.
At the airport, they bumped into Stanley’s group.
Stanley said a few words to his bodyguards behind him and walked toward her. “What a coincidence, Summer. What time is your flight?”
“One o’clock,” she said.
It was not a coincidence. The airport was the closest one to the county-level city, and it had a direct flight to Hoover City. If they wanted to return to Hoover City, they would have to take a flight from that airport. It was natural to bump into someone she knew in such a small airport.
“Our flight’s at two.” Stanley smiled.
“Mrs. Emerson.”
Right then, Tim came up to her. “We have to go to the lounge.”
Summer nodded in acknowledgment and turned to Stanley. “I’ll be off now. See you.”
Stanley returned a smile. He watched as Summer disappeared into the distance.
Tim followed Summer from behind. “How did you and Mr. Li get to know each other, Mrs. Emerson?” he asked after a moment of hesitation.
Summer stopped and looked at him.
Tim bowed his head. “Don’t get me wrong, Mrs. Emerson. I don’t mean to be disrespectful. Back then, it just crossed my mind that before the young master and you went to the island, Mr. Li and you had appeared on the news. I’m just asking.”
Knowing Tim’s good intention, Summer thought for a while. “I don’t know when I met him. But when he appeared three years ago, he seemed to know me, judging from the tone of his voice.”
Tim nodded. “There’s something I’m not sure if I should say.”
“Please speak your mind.” She smiled.
“We don’t know who this Mr. Li is. Please be careful, Mrs. Emerson.” His voice was gentle.
Unlike Leonardo, whose hostile attitude toward Stanley was apparent, Tim was more circumspect. Realizing that Stanley had saved Summer’s life before, Summer would naturally be grateful to him.
Due to such a complicated relationship, the better the intent, the gentler and more tactful he should be.
