Summer instinctively nodded and realized that Jessica could not see her reaction.”I called him.”
“He came to get you after you called him? I don’t believe he has no feelings for you if you ask me.”
“Ms. Hicks, we have to board now,”Jessica’s assistant was heard saying on the other end.
“You can board first,”Jessica replied with a low voice.
“I need to board the plane, Summer. Once the plane lands, there are more train and car rides, so I probably won’t have time to contact you. By the time I get back, the big boss might already recover his memories.”
“Have a safe ride. I’ll visit you when I’m free.”
“All right. Go on, now.”
Summer hurried Jessica and hung up. Then, she took a cab home.
Her house was empty. After she got changed, she took her laptop, as well as her tablet, and sat by the window, ready to work.
She had watched The Lost City many times, but she still needed to pay attention to the details to avoid obvious plot holes that audiences could spot.
The nature of her work was half about outdoing herself and half about beating the audience’s expectations.
There were probably dozens of pages of research materials to go through just for the scene of a business meeting or a crime-busting operation. Not to mention, the final materials that were usable could only be a couple of pages.
Based on the first season, writing the second was not much different from working on a whole new story. It was all about cooking up some new arcs and adding in the old elements to create a continuation of the plot.
Summer played The Lost City with her tablet while she typed on her laptop. Whenever she felt tired, she would read the entertainment news on her mobile phone.
News about Jerome and her had been taken down, and major media outlets did not have the story online anymore.
As for other smaller media outlets, no one really cared about them.
Summer read all of the articles but found nothing of interest other than some celebrity gossip and publicity news for an upcoming drama series.
After she finished reading through the page, she returned to the top and refreshed the page as she always did. Right then, a new headline cropped up.
“Shocking:The president of Emerson Group brings a woman, who appears to be his new lover, out of the police station at midnight.”
Summer clicked on the link. The photographs were apparently taken with a telephoto lens and zoomed in since they looked blurry.
The police station was in the background, and clinging onto Leonardo was a woman with unkempt hair.
Leonardo’s face was not clear in the photograph. It was probably due to his frequent appearance in public that people could easily identify him. As for the woman with messy hair…
Summer zoomed in on the photograph and carefully looked at it. She could not believe that she was the person in the picture.
Her face was not facing the camera, but she looked a sight, holding on to Leonardo’s arm with her hair sticking out all over the place.
The comments below the photograph were not much different from what she expected.
“Are you telling me this woman is Leonardo’s new lover? Is that Leonardo’s taste?”
“Lol, that woman looks retarded!”
Summer sneered when she saw that comment.”You’re the retarded one.”
She read on.
“Her face isn’t even visible. Who knows, she might be Leonardo’s cousin or something?”
“Impossible. Legend has it that the young master is distant. He wouldn’t be this close to his cousins.”
“That’s not right. Doesn’t the young master have a fiancée? There hasn’t been news that he and his fiancée have parted!”
“Even husband and wife can divorce. What do you think the odds are when she’s just his fiancée?”
Only then Summer remembered that Leonardo and Amber had been engaged before. She felt sour when she dwelled on it.
She wondered if Leonardo knew about this as the news had just been published. Who knows, Leonardo might think that it was her who leaked the information to the media.
Summer found her mobile phone and called Leonardo.
There was only a”yeah”from Leonardo on the other end. It sounded as cold as it could get.
“The media photographed us when you brought me out of the police station. It’s on the news now. I guess they just uploaded it.”
“I know,”Leonardo only replied after a moment of silence.
She sensed that Leonardo was going to hang up soon, so she called out his name,”Leonardo.”
“Anything else?”The impatience in his voice was apparent.
“Will you come over for dinner tonight?”She paused, then continued,”Let me know if you’d like to eat anything.”
There was only a faint”Mhm”from him.
It surprised Summer, nevertheless. She did not expect him to agree so quickly.
As the line went dead, Summer received a text message from Leonardo. It was a list of dishes.
When she asked Leonardo if he wanted to come over for dinner, she was actually trying to indirectly get an answer from him.
The idea was that if he was still sulking over the news about Jerome and her, he would refuse to come for dinner. But if he agreed, it meant that he was no longer harping on the matter.
That allegation was just a cooked-up story in the first place.
Since Leonardo had agreed to come over for dinner, Summer drove her car out to shop for ingredients.
She went to a large mall in the city center, but as she left the mall’s parking lot, she felt as though someone was watching her. The feeling grew more apparent when she was inside the hypermarket.
She glanced back cautiously and quickly slipped into an aisle between two display shelves before she went around to hide in a corner.
Not long after she stood in the corner, a woman approached the spot, as though she was looking for someone.
Summer only saw the woman’s face once she came nearer.
It turned out that the woman was Karen.
She wanted to leave quietly before Karen spotted her, but it was too late.
“Summer!”
Karen called out to her, quickly walking up and standing in her way to stop her.
“It’s really you!”Karen carefully scanned Summer with a hint of excitement in her eyes.
“Mrs. Jarrett.”Summer looked at Karen impassively.
Karen’s expression changed.”It’s been a long time, Summer. You still hold a grudge against me…”
“I don’t,”Summer replied almost immediately.
Karen looked at her, not knowing how to respond for a while.
“It doesn’t matter. There’s no reason for me to still be angry with you. If I still had a grudge against you, I’m sure you wouldn’t get the chance to speak to me here right now.”
Summer’s emotions were as calm as her voice.
She had given up on Karen. She would have forgotten about Karen’s existence had she not appeared in front of her.
