Stanley telling Summer that he was her fiancé was just to gauge her reaction. However, she turned out to be unsure of herself. As a man with common sense, he suspected that Summer had lost her memory, and his relaxed expression evaporated.
“Doctor, please conduct a comprehensive medical check on her.”
The doctors in the ward had also noticed Summer’s reaction and appeared solemn. After they gave her a full body checkup, one doctor asked Stanley into his office.
“Mr. Bates, your fiancée, Miss. Jarrett is a little weak physically. Other than that, she’s generally fine, but her brain has suffered a severe concussion, causing memory loss…”
After Stanley heard what the doctor said, he thanked the doctor and returned to the ward.
Summer was sitting on the bed, fiddling with the TV remote to flip the channels. A nurse attending to her was talking to her, telling her how envious she was because she had a fiancé who never forsook her.
The nurse turned her head and saw Stanley standing at the doorway. She blushed. “Mr. Bates.” He was not only handsome but also good-tempered and affectionate. If not for his “love” toward Summer, the nurses would have confessed their feelings for him.
After the nurse left, Stanley sat down on the edge of the bed and quietly looked at Summer. After lying on the bed for three years, she was skinny and weak. Her face was pale, and she was slow in her reaction.
When she finally noticed Stanley’s stare, she turned her head and looked at him. Her expression told Stanley that he was a stranger to her. “They say your name is Stanley?” she cautiously asked.
The nurse just told her that she had been in a coma for three years, and a man called Stanley had been looking after her steadfastly. He told her he was her fiancé, but she could remember nothing about it. She did not even remember her name, let alone if she had a fiancé by the name of Stanley. She had lost her memory and her past. She became scared when her mind drew a blank.
“Yeah.” Stanley stared at her intently as if he was thinking of something.
Summer subconsciously fiddled with the blanket. “They also say that you’re my… fiancé…”
“That’s right.” He nodded his head.
After a few seconds, she shook her head in confusion and retorted, “That’s not true.”
If Stanley was her fiancé, why did she not find him affable at all? Feelings could have been lost along with her memory, but how could there be not a hint of affability when they were so intimate before?
“You think I lied to you.” Stanley looked a little intrigued.
“You…” Summer thought of what the nurse said. She shook her head and spoke hesitantly. “No, perhaps our feelings weren’t that deep last time. Otherwise, I…”
Since Stanley had been waiting for her for three years while she was in a coma, it showed how steadfast he was. She trusted that he did not lie. Maybe she did not find him affable because their feelings for each other were not deep enough.
“You’re right. Our feelings weren’t deep enough, but that’s in the past. We can start anew to understand each other.” He held out his hand with a smile. “Nice to meet you. My name is Stanley.”
His smile was too sincere and contagious. Summer trusted him completely now. “Nice to meet you, my name is…”
“Summer,” he reminded her.
“Nice to meet you. My name is Summer.” Her eyes brightened up like the stars in the night sky.
Stanley held her skinny hand and fell into thought instantly. This woman was skinny to a horrible point, yet she was still unusually pleasant to look at.
…
Summer remained in the hospital for half a month. Once she could start eating normally, Stanley brought her out.
It was September. The air was cooler now as autumn had just set in. Summer wore a gray knitted sweater with a white shirt beneath, and she looked gracious with her long smooth hair cascading down her shoulders.
Sitting in the passenger seat with the window wound down to let the air in, Summer closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She felt happy to smell the familiar scent in the air. She turned to look at Stanley with a smile. “Stanley, I must have grown up in this city because I can smell the familiar scent in the air.”
“Really?” He turned to look at her, his eyes staying on her face for two seconds before moving away.
As the car came to a cross junction, Stanley brought the car to a stop and waited for the traffic light to turn green. Summer looked out the window.
Next to them was an expensive-looking black vehicle, the rear windows of which were being lowered while a little girl was heard saying, “Emerson… be friends! I don’t want to be friends with you!”
Perhaps due to being too little, the little girl could not express herself clearly when she spoke fast. Summer looked up at the girl who was about three or four. She had a balloon in her hand as she tried to climb out of the window. The girl had black and soft hair with neat bangs on her forehead. Her eyes were big and black as well, and she looked extremely adorable with her mouth pouted.
Summer’s heart was in her mouth when the girl climbed up the window. Just then, a big hand with well-defined phalanges reached out to hold the girl by her tummy and take her back down. The little girl suddenly extended her hand, which was as white and soft as tofu, and pointed at Summer. “Pretty girl…”
The man who was holding the little girl glanced in Summer’s direction. “Rosie, your aesthetic sense makes me wonder if you are my daughter.”
He was an extremely handsome man with a perfect facial structure. His black eyes were deep-set and piercing. Summer just looked at them for a second and could not help but retract her eyes. But at the same time, her heart skipped a beat. She reached to press her hand against her chest, and her face was pale.
The traffic light turned green, and Stanley drove ahead. He noticed Summer’s expression. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” She shook her head.
