Chapter 313 I Like It Challenging

Book:CEO's Substitute Wife Published:2024-5-1

Since Summer had said nothing, Jessica would say nothing. Accompanied by Summer, Jessica sat down beside Carl.
Sitting on the other side of Carl was Leonardo, and next was the strange woman, Kate and Tim. The woman was talking to Kate and occasionally to Leonardo. With a cigarette in his mouth, Leonardo did not seem to care about the woman.
As Summer pulled back her eyes, she felt Jessica nudging her arm. She looked at Jessica, who pointed her finger at her mobile phone. The next second, she received a text message from Jessica.
“The woman’s name is Amber Thompson. She has studied abroad. Her parents are some high-ranking government officers. She has a pretty solid family background. Kate is eager to match her with Leonardo.”
“Amber.” Summer spelled out the name in her mind. It was a beautiful name.
The room was quiet. Everyone was holding their glasses and whispering to each other. Summer looked down, not bothering to look at Leonardo again.
This was an entirely normal social gathering. Since Leonardo was publicly single now, the Emerson family would surely try to find him a woman. With his background and capability, the women whom the Emerson family would introduce would only get better and better.
They were equally stature in terms of family background, looks, and capability. Only such a woman could match up to the Emerson family. But still, it came as a surprise.
Seeing that Summer remained silent, Jessica leaned over to whisper in her ear. “Don’t you have anything to say?”
“No.” Summer took a deep breath and whispered back. “What can I say?”
Jessica frowned. Considering the current status of Leonardo and Summer, she really could not think of what more Summer could say. With this thinking in mind, Jessica felt just as upset.
She knew that Summer was the rightful wife of Leonardo, but all they could do was to sit by and watch as the Emerson family tried to match Leonardo with the other woman. Had it not been for the mess happening in the Emerson family, Summer would not have to suffer this humiliation.
Meanwhile, Carl was a total wuss in front of Jessica. He took a piece of fruit and asked, “Jessica, do you want a fruit?”
“No, I’m not in the mood. Don’t you talk to me. I’m tired of seeing men like you all.” Jessica raised her voice on purpose.
Jessica bumped into these people when she was having dinner with her production crew. She called Carl, who told her everything because he wanted to show his innocence. Carl told her it was Kate who introduced a woman to Leonardo, and so they had gathered here.
When Jessica heard that Kate was introducing a woman to Leonardo, she came over to check it out and found that it was true. So she informed Summer at once.
Jessica’s words had not caught Leonardo’s attention. But when it was Summer talking, he glanced over at Summer.
“Please excuse me. I have to go to the ladies’ room.” Summer got up and went out of the room.
As soon as Summer left, Kate followed suit.
Leonardo put out the cigarette stub in his hand and said absentmindedly, “Are you going out to catch up with your younger brother’s ex-wife?”
Kate’s face looked not too happy upon hearing what Leonardo said.
“Leonardo, mind your words.” Amber was her best friend. She just wanted to make a match for Amber and Leonardo.
Leonardo smirked and looked over at Amber. “That is my ex-wife. Isn’t she pretty?”
He had been having a stony face all night. Amber was caught by surprise to see him smiling suddenly. She had not made out what he was saying for a moment.
Leonardo cocked an eyebrow with a sneer. He then said not a word again.
Without waiting for Amber to speak, Kate said with her face darkening. “Leonardo, please mind your language.”
“I’m speaking the truth. I do feel that my ex-wife is pretty.” Leonardo leaned back on the couch, then looked over at Carl. “Don’t you think Summer is pretty?”
Carl swallowed hard; should he answer yes or now?
Seeing that Leonardo had gone overboard, Kate snapped. “That’s enough!”
Amber quickly and gently pulled Kate’s arm. “Kate, don’t be angry. It’s all right.”
Kate hissed and sat down. Leonardo got to his feet, dusted his clothes, especially his arm that Amber had touched before as if they were dirty. Amber took that all in. As she fought back her emotion, her expression looked a little unnatural.
Leonardo did not bother to look at her. “It’s late now. I’ve got to work tomorrow. Please excuse me.”
Kate said, “Since it’s late, it is not safe for Amber to go home alone. You’ve got to send her home.”
“Tim, send Miss Su home.” After Leonardo said that, he headed for the door without looking at anyone.
Kate finally could not hold back her anger and blurted out, “Leonardo!”
But he ignored her and walked out.
“This is too much!” Kate was fit to be tied, her chest heaving up and down, showing that she was anything but calm.
But Amber behaved exactly the opposite. She poured Kate a glass of water, looking determined.
“Your younger brother has an attitude, just like you. Only that he is more ill-tempered than you are. I like it. I like it challenging.”
Hearing that, Kate’s expression looked better now. “He has been this ill-tempered all along. You will get along with him with time.”
Amber nodded with a smile.
Jessica heard what the two women said and could not help rolling her eyes. She raised her chin and muttered, “Only if you get to chance to be with him. But the way I see it; Leonardo isn’t interested in Miss Su a bit.”
Amber turned to glance at her but said nothing. Kate was seen whispering into Amber’s ear, probably telling her who Jessica was. After that, Amber sneered at Jessica.
Before Jessica got the chance to dig at them, Carl stood up and looked frostily at Kate.
“Miss Emerson, don’t forget to settle the bill before you go. Leonardo and I might be close friends. But money and brothers don’t mix. We have to be clear about it.”
Kate was born with a silver spoon in her mouth. People would butter her up wherever she went. Not expecting Carl to treat her like this, her expression changed. But in the end, she still gritted her teeth and acknowledged that. “I know.”
Pleased with the reply, Carl nodded, then brought Jessica out of the room.
