Chapter 299 He Was Fine a Moment Ago, Then He Went Nuts

Book:CEO's Substitute Wife Published:2024-5-1

Due to Grandpa Emerson’s accident a year ago, the Jarrett family had been very eager to draw a line in their relationship with Summer as they were afraid of being implicated. Without even informing Summer, Mr. Jarrett had straight-up written to the press to disavow their father-daughter relationship.
The Jarrett family had always focused on their self-interests, and Summer was neither surprised that they would do such a thing nor hurt at all.
After all, she had already stopped expecting anything from them long ago.
That event was all over the town back then, and everyone present was from the entertainment industry, so they would have naturally paid attention to the matter.
Anyone with a discerning eye could tell at a glance that it was a ploy the Jarrett family had pulled just because they were afraid of being implicated with Summer.
While most people were likely to do the same thing as Lynn in the face of such a situation, it was admittedly not a very respectable thing to do.
Others would naturally look down on such behavior.
Vicky’s deliberate prodding of Summer, alongside her obvious sarcastic intentions, were so obvious that even a fool would have noticed it.
The other few girls, who were present, were not your run-of-the-mill characters either, and they simply smiled, not saying much.
Vicky had read the reports online, and she was inclined to believe that Summer had separated from Leonardo. As for the incident in the supermarket last time, she had chosen to forget it entirely.
She had intended to prod Summer a little and see the latter stomp about in anger, yet she did not want to be the laughing stock now.
She looked in the direction of the girls and coldly asked, “What are you laughing at?”
The girls there were brought up by someone else and did not even see Vicky on the same level.
No one in the entertainment industry was a good person, much less a woman.
One of the girls said, “What? Is the Golden Cauldron your territory now? We’re just laughing because we’re happy, or do we need your permission for that?”
In the end, they were all actresses, and that tepid barbed comment was particularly abrasive.
“Who do you think you are, speaking to me in that tone?” Vicky turned over to Adams the moment she said that, seemingly wanting him to back her up.
However, everyone in the entertainment industry knew that Adams had been doing as he pleased for the past six months.
First, he canceled his deal with Tip Top Entertainment, then he found a woman whose reputation stank like the sewer to be his girlfriend. His reviews had been deteriorating and the film offers he got were horrible, yet his status did not seem to have diminished much.
It did not look like Adams wanted to back Vicky up. He only glanced at the watch on his wrist and said, “I have something to do as well, I’ll take my leave.”
As Adams spoke, he turned and looked at Summer, his tone gentle. “Summer how are you going back? Need me to give you a ride?”
He had just called her “Ms. Jarrett” a moment ago, and now he was directly calling her “Summer”.
The seemingly intimate change in the calling of her name made everyone think about the scandalous rumors between Summer and Adams.
The two perhaps did share a chapter in their life together.
Summer was sure that Adams had done that on purpose.
He knew that both her and Vicky could not stand each other, and doing so would just increase Vicky’s hatred toward her.
“I don’t know you all that well, Mr. Wilson.” Summer directly headed out as she said that.
When she turned around, she saw the gaze Vicky had on her, and it was the gaze of someone who wished to rip her apart.
Summer found Adams to be a total psycho.
He had been doing fine, yet he suddenly went nuts.
He did not seem to care about his reputation or acting career anymore. It was as if he had just given up entirely and was digging holes for himself all over.
As soon as Summer left, Eliza followed suit.
She was particularly in the mood for gossip today. “Was there anything between you and Adams?”
Summer vehemently denied it. “No.”
Eliza and Summer had been working together for so long now, and Eliza knew a little about Summer’s character. If she could say no without any hesitation, then it meant that there was nothing.
But she was still a little curious.
“Then you and—”
Summer stopped and interrupted her. “Then what’s going on with you and Bowen? You even… Ughmmm…”
Before Summer could finish her sentence, Eliza forcibly covered her mouth.
Summer tried to push her hand away, but the latter was using so much force that she could not push her hand aside.
Summer gave up struggling. “Hmm?”
Upon seeing Eliza’s almost suicidal expression, Summer looked over in the direction of her stare.
Just right opposite them, Bowen had appeared out of nowhere.
So… did Bowen hear what she had just said?
Summer turned to Eliza, who glared at her before she turned to flee.
Summer was a little embarrassed, but she still greeted Bowen, “Mr. Diaz.”
“Ms. Jarrett.” Bowen nodded formally at Summer and returned the greeting.
However, as Summer was about to leave, Bowen suddenly stopped her. “Ms. Jarrett, the thing you said earlier…”
“I said nothing earlier. Ask Eliza yourself if you have any doubts.” Summer hurried out as soon as she said that.
Eliza did not wait for Summer and had already driven off.
Summer could not help but laugh. She had to hail a taxi back.
Standing by the roadside, she could not help but look back at Golden Cauldron’s main door.
She did not meet Leonardo tonight.
Just as she turned back, she noticed that a black car had silently stopped before her.
Summer’s eyes lit up, and her first reaction was to think of Leonardo.
However, the moment the car window came down and Summer caught sight of the person in the car, she could smile no more.
Jerome placed his arm on the car window and smiled deeply at her. “Summer, long time no see.”
“… Long time no see.” Summer took two silent steps back.
It was literally the case of speaking of the devil.
Perhaps, she should not have come to the Golden Cauldron.
The Golden Cauldron was Hoover City’s most established high-end club, and every person with status would often appear there. So, coming here today alone had her running into several old acquaintances.
Jerome noticed her minute movements, and he reached out to knock on the car window a few times as he slowly said, “I suppose we are old friends now. We haven’t met for a while now, and you don’t have to be so indifferent.”
“Some other day.” Summer pursed her lips and said, “I’ll invite you for dinner some other day.”
“Do I look like the kind who’s lacking a meal?” Jerome’s smile may have been gentle, but the words he spoke were not that easy to deal with.
Summer was still thinking about how to respond when she heard Jerome speak again. “Help me out with something in a few days’ time.”
“What thing?” Summer looked at him with caution.
Jerome saw through her thoughts and smiled as he said, “Don’t worry, it’s not murder or smuggling, or anything unethical.”
Everything that should have been said and not been said were all said by Jerome.
Without any recourse, Summer could only nod. “All right.”
