Summer was touched by Douglas’s words. She patted him on the shoulder and said, “I’m fine.” She had been staying at home for the past few days. Other than eating, she did not go anywhere. What could have happened to her?
Douglas smiled. “Good to hear that. Even if there’s anything, Leonardo will protect you.” He did not know what Leonardo had said in the hospital the other day.
Summer forced a smile. She had something to say to Leonardo, but now that Douglas was there, she was tongue-tied.
Leonardo and Douglas walked Summer to the hospital exit. The bodyguard, who had brought her to the hospital earlier was still waiting there.
Leonardo instructed the bodyguards. “Send Mrs. Emerson home.” His face looked frosty.
Summer really wanted to say something, but she hesitated. Douglas had sensed that in Summer, and he thrust his thumb back over his shoulder. “I better go back up to the ward.” Then off he went.
Summer looked around before she held Leonardo’s arm and brought him to a quiet corner. After she made sure that there was no one around, she leaned close to him and said urgently, “Leonardo, on New Year’s Eve, I saw your aunt and dad sneaking into a room, but they came back out after a while. I feel like they must have some secrets—”
“That’s enough!” Leonardo snapped, flinging her hand away.
“Leonardo! What I’m saying is true.” Summer threaded her hand through her hair in frustration. “You have to believe me.”
“You haven’t even cleared your name yet. What makes you think that I can trust you?” Leonardo looked extremely distant. “One more thing, you’re talking about my aunt and dad. Are you trying to say that they’re conspiring to kill my grandpa and set you up for it? That is ridiculous!”
“I didn’t say that!” She did not say it out although that was what was on her mind.
Leonardo’s expression stiffened, but he quickly calmed down. Staring Summer in the eye, he spoke in a threatening tone. “Isn’t that what you want to say? My aunt and dad are Grandpa’s own children. Why would they want to harm him? Do you think I’d believe that?”
“Didn’t you tell me before that the Emersons have something to do with your mom’s case? You—”
Leonardo did not allow her the chance to speak. He whisked her into his arms and shoved her into the car. His voice was impassive as he said, “Don’t let me hear that again.” He then slammed the door shut and left.
Gazing through the window, Summer looked on as he returned to the hospital without turning back. She leaned back on the seat, clenched her fist, and forced it down on the upholstery, feeling frustrated.
Unfathomable. Leonardo was just too unfathomable. Even if Douglas said that Leonardo would protect her, she wanted to know what was in Leonardo’s mind the most. Otherwise, she would be on pins and needles all the time.
Yet, Leonardo’s attitude was always so cold, and he kept everything to himself. She did not know what he was thinking, and it did not help that he was so cold. She did not know how she could keep trusting him.
…
The car stopped in front of the mansion.
“Summer!”
Still sitting in the car like death warmed up, Summer heard Jessica’s voice.
She turned her head and saw Jessica standing outside.
After leaving the hospital, Jessica was worried about Summer and thought she might as well go back and wait for her outside the mansion. She saw Summer and opened the car door for her.
“How did it go? Did Big Boss do anything to you?”
Summer got out and shook her head as she sighed. “I was hoping that he would do something about me.”
Jessica frowned at her answer.
“Let’s get in first. It’s freezing out here.” Summer brought her into the mansion. They went into the bedroom, and Summer told Jessica about her conversation with Leonardo as well as her thoughts on it. Jessica was dumbfounded after she heard about it.
“How-How could it be? Grandpa Emerson has been treating his two children very well. When his daughter got married, her dowry was to the tune of hundreds of millions. And don’t forget, that was twenty years ago,” Jessica spoke of her analysis. “Talking about Big Boss’ father, Grandpa Emerson has treated Michael very well. He brought Michael into Emerson Corporation, and when Grandpa Emerson retired, he handed the company to him. I can’t see a reason for this brother and sister to conspire against Grandpa Emerson…”
Summer did not rebut her point. Instead, she nodded in agreement. “That’s right. They have no reason to harm Grandpa Emerson. If they were just against me, they didn’t have to go to great lengths to use Grandpa Emerson to set me up.”
After all the speculations, they still came back to square one. They could be right and also wrong. It seemed that everything was so complicated and interconnected. Yet, they could not make sense of things, and their theories could not hold up to scrutiny.
Seeing Summer’s nonplussed look, Jessica comforted her. “Don’t think about it too much. I believe that Big Boss is on it. He won’t let anything happen to you. All you need to worry about is your baby.”
Summer pursed her lips and said nothing. Everyone told her that Leonardo would fix it, yet he refused to tell her anything. She was like a headless chicken, not knowing what to do.
She thought of what Douglas said and asked Jessica, “Do you know about Leonardo’s twin sister?”
“I know.” Jessica sat down beside her. “Her name is Emerson Jinyun. I heard that she is pretty, living abroad, and a successful career woman.” Thinking that what she had said was too general, she scratched her head and added, “That’s all I know. She is very low profile.”
“I got it.” Summer nodded.
“Why are you asking about this? Is she coming back?” Jessica was quickwitted.
“She should be back in two days.”
“She’s a nasty character. You need to be careful.” Jessica looked worried. “Now that everyone in the Emerson family thinks you are the person who pushed Grandpa Emerson, once Emerson Jinyun is back, she will surely look for you.”
“I know, but don’t you worry about me. Like you said, Leonardo will take care of it.” Summer smiled as she got to her feet. “Let me walk you out. You should spend time with your dad and mom during New Year…”
Jessica was moved, and she stood up. “All right, I’ll see you around. If you need anything, just call me. If I can’t answer, call Carl. He has time on his hands, and please feel free to order him around.”
