Since Leonardo did not allow her to visit Grandpa Emerson, she would go on her own.
However, Leonardo told her that she had to stay home the night before, so he had definitely instructed the bodyguards to keep an eye on her.
Despite knowing that, she still decided to give it a shot. Just as expected, she was stopped at the door.
“Where are you going, Mrs. Emerson?”
She cocked an eyebrow and squinted as if she lorded over everything. “It’s none of your business.”
The bodyguard looked unintimidated. “The young master has given instructions that you are not to go out, Mrs. Emerson. If there’s anything you need, tell us, and we’ll do it for you.”
“What if I insist?”
“I’m sorry.” The bodyguard bowed his head, his attitude and tone firm. It seemed that Leonardo had handed down his forceful order; she was not going anywhere.
Summer did not fight it. She turned around and went back inside. Sloughing on the sofa in the living room like death warmed up, she spaced out.
“Summer! I’m here!”
Jessica’s voice was heard all of a sudden. Summer looked in the direction of the voice and saw Jessica coming in through the door. Summer’s eyes narrowed, recalling the time when people from the Jarrett family came. The bodyguards had stopped them outside the entrance.
“Didn’t they stop you?” While she spoke, Summer patted the spot beside her to signal Jessica to sit down.
Jessica sat beside her. “No, they know me and even greeted me. After that, they just let me in.”
Summer’s mind was racing. When the Jarretts came, the bodyguards blocked them outside. Yet, when Jessica came, they allowed her in. Needless to say, Leonardo must have instructed them to do so.
Jessica noticed that Summer was deep in thought. “Don’t think and worry too much. Give birth to the child, and Big Boss will handle everything else,” she exhorted.
“He’s not allowing me to go out again.” Summer sounded fed up.
Jessica thought for a moment and said, “Perhaps it’s for your own good. With the news of Grandpa Emerson’s incident spreading, staying at home could be a blessing in disguise.”
“I don’t want to sit here and do nothing. I don’t know who set me up, and I have no idea what Leonardo is thinking. It all happened because of me, but now it seems that I’m far from the epicenter.” She paused, then added, “I want to go out.”
Jessica thought Summer had a point, and she asked, “Are you sure you want to go out?”
“You have an idea?” Summer turned to look at her.
Jessica blinked and suddenly screamed at the door. “Summer, what’s going on?! Have you passed out?!”
She gave Summer a push, urging her. “Now, faint! Quick!”
Summer closed her eyes and feigned it. Jessica’s scream had attracted the attention of the bodyguards and maids.
“What happened to Mrs. Emerson?”
Jessica shook her head, appearing to be in a panic. “I don’t know, she just fainted all of a sudden. We have to send her to the hospital. She’s pregnant now…”
Jessica’s acting deserved an Oscar. The bodyguards did not suspect them at all but sent Summer to the hospital, the same hospital owned by Emerson Corporation and where Grandpa Emerson was admitted.
Jessica, of course, followed. She sat in the backseat so that she could take care of Summer.
Once they arrived in front of the hospital entrance, the car door was opened as Leonardo came out to carry Summer out of the car. His face was grave.
Jessica saw him and was struck dumb. She just thought of helping Summer bluff the bodyguards and getting her out of the mansion. She did not expect to see Leonardo there. So, she secretly wished Summer good luck; she had done what she could.
Jessica grabbed her handbag and caught up from behind. “Big Boss!”
“Why has she passed out?” Leonardo did not look at Jessica. His face was still grim.
Jessica feared him and looked sheepish when she heard the question. Nevertheless, she forced herself to look calm. “She just fainted suddenly while we were talking…” Her voice became softer toward the end of the sentence.
Leonardo had long legs, and his steps were quick. Jessica had to partially jog to keep up. While they were moving, she secretly glanced at Summer, who was in Leonardo’s arms. Summer opened one of her eyes slightly and blinked, signaling Jessica to leave.
Summer had her eyes closed the rest of the time. It was only until she arrived before the hospital that she took a peek and discovered that she was at the same hospital as Grandpa Emerson. Things were not looking good, she thought. When she was being carried out of the car, she could already sense that Leonardo was the one carrying her. The thing was, her cover would be blown during the medical examination.
Nothing was probably going to happen to her, but Jessica, her partner-in-crime, could be implicated. Jessica got the hint and quickly smacked her head and said, “I realize I still have something on. Big Boss, I have to go now…”
Leonardo did not even look at her. He just continued to carry Summer and headed toward the emergency room. Jessica left as fast as she could.
Just as they were about to arrive at the ER, Summer suddenly spoke. “Leonardo.”
He abruptly halted in his steps, looking down at her, face impassive. “I thought you fainted?”
“I’m awake now.” Summer played along.
Leonardo smiled mirthlessly and put Summer down.
Summer knew that Leonardo had figured out their clever trick, but at least, he did not just drop her down abruptly. He gently let her stand on her feet.
As she got to her feet, she said, “I want to visit Grandpa.”
Leonardo’s lips curled up, but there was no smile from him. “Summer, do you really think you’re clever?”
“Not as clever as you are.” She shook her head.
As if her reply had pissed Leonardo off, he raised his voice. “Then go home!”
“For what? Go home and guess what’s in your clever brain?” Summer was firm.
There was instant silence.
Leonardo had been staying in the hospital since tragedy struck Grandpa Emerson. He was lacking sleep and a proper diet, appearing haggard except for his eyes, which were as sharp as ever. That was how Leonardo was; he seemed like Ironman, behaving as though he was omnipotent.
Every time Summer thought she had understood him, he would do something unfathomable again. He was too domineering. If he wanted to hide his thoughts, no one could take a peek.
The two of them remained silent for a good one minute before Leonardo finally said, “Follow me.” He seemed to have given in.
