Summer knew the Jarrett family members too well. They served their own interests and were only concerned about getting something out of her, milking her dry.
News about her pushing Grandpa Emerson down the stairs had spread far and wide through newspapers as well as the Internet. Meanwhile, Grandpa Emerson was still unconscious.
Who was Grandpa Emerson? A mover and shaker in the business world. He was influential and wealthy, the absolute head of the Emerson family. If Grandpa Emerson could not recover, the most terrible fate would await Summer.
Those people from the Jarrett family visited today just to confirm their fears. After that, they would sever ties with Summer. The Jarrett family had used her for far too many times, and she smelled their intentions from afar.
It turned out that Summer was right. That same night, Lynn took up some advertisement space in the newspaper to cut ties with Summer. The news made headlines.
Summer read the article a few times, took a screenshot, and instructed a bodyguard to buy a copy of the newspaper. It did not take long before Jessica rang her up.
“Isn’t he your natural father? He could never be more despicable than this. You didn’t push Grandpa Emerson. Before things are even clear, he already can’t wait to sever ties with you, afraid of being implicated. He’…” Jessica condemned Lynn as soon as the call went through. She was outraged when she heard about the injustice that Summer faced.
Once Jessica was done bashing, Summer calmly said, “There’s no need to get so worked up. That’s who they are.”
Lynn had never treated her as his own daughter. Even the article was not for the benefit of the Emerson family. Summer discovered that she had begun to understand Lynn.
“I’m serious. You don’t have to get so angry. It’s not like this is the first or second time. Ending the father-daughter relationship could be a good thing. At least, there’ll be one less problem next time.”
Jessica was silent as if she was thinking of something. After a while, she asked, “Have you talked with Big Boss? What is he thinking?”
“I don’t know.” Summer sounded a little depressed at the mention of Leonardo.
“You don’t know?” Obviously, Jessica was more worried than she was. “What is he thinking? If things keep going on like this, you’ll go to jail. Is that what he wants?” She sounded as if she had gone ape.
Summer had also been feeling down for the past two days because of Leonardo’s poor attitude, but she did not think that he was really going to send her to jail. She was calm, believing that Leonardo was just keeping something from her instead of suspecting her.
She turned around and comforted Jessica. “I’ll be fine. He won’t really let me go to jail.”
Summer mentioned that she had left the old residence, so Jessica was going over to see her tomorrow.
After the call ended, she heard the roar of the engine downstairs. Leonardo was back.
She put on her clothes and walked out of the room into the corridor. Once at the upper floor landing, she bent down to check the living room downstairs. When Leonardo came in, Ava went up to him.
“Young Master, you must not have eaten yet. Let me reheat the food for you,” Ava said.
Leonardo put his hand up and headed upstairs. As though he had sensed Summer on the landing, he looked up at her and started to scurry up the stairs, almost running. Going up to Summer, Leonardo gazed at her as if he was studying her. It was only after a few seconds that he spoke impassively.
“Why are you standing here? Get back to the room.”
He sounded like he was giving her an order, but she had gotten used to it and was not afraid of him. She replied with an “Oh”, but her legs did not move.
Leonardo started to lose his patience. “Summer! Did you hear what I say?”
She leaned on the handrail as she looked up at him, her expression and voice serious. “The room’s too far away, I’m tired of walking.”
She could see Leonardo’s face darkening. It was apparent that he was not too happy.
When Grandpa Emerson was sent to the hospital, what Leonardo said had really frightened her. Later, when she tried to make him divulge things in the morning, he knocked her out. Since Leonardo was being extremely discreet and she was unable to make him tell her the truth, she could only find comfort in messing with him.
Judging from past experience and his temperament, Summer thought Leonardo would carry her back into the bedroom, but he did not. Instead, he stared at her and spoke grimly. “Grandpa is still in the ICU, unconscious.”
Summer was startled for a while before she softly said, “I’m sorry.”
Right then, she did not care what Leonardo was hiding from her. What bothered her more was that Grandpa Emerson was still unconscious in the hospital.
She turned around and walked back to the bedroom. Leonardo looked at her as she went, then he followed her.
Once Leonardo entered the room, Summer said, “I want to visit Grandpa.”
“You don’t have to go,” he rejected her request categorically.
She did not expect him to say no so quickly. She was transfixed for a moment before she said, “I just want to see him.” She sounded almost like she was pleading.
Leonardo pressed his lips together, looking as if he was about to give in.
Just as Summer looked at him expectantly, he told her faintly, “Right now, you should just stay home.”
Running her hands through her hair in frustration, she turned around, took off her jacket, and lay on the bed. “Fine. I need to rest now. Just go.”
It annoyed her to see Leonardo because he was silent as a stone. He just refused to tell her anything. Closing her eyes, she heard Leonardo’s voice again.
“Did you ask the bodyguard to buy a newspaper?”
“Since you already know, why ask?” Her voice was frosty.
She thought Leonardo would say something, but what she heard was the door closing. Getting up and sitting on the bed, she started to wonder if she had gotten it wrong.
Grandpa Emerson was important to Leonardo, whereas she and Leonardo had only been together for a few months.
Furthermore, she did not have an alibi. Alisa said she harmed Grandpa Emerson because of Eliza; it may have sounded a little far-fetched, but it was not entirely unreasonable.
Looking at it from Leonardo’s perspective, he could have found it reasonable to believe that Summer was responsible. However, from Summer’s angle, the case was full of loopholes; someone had set her up. She was not going to give up without a fight, otherwise, she would go mad.
