She looked up and noticed that Leonardo’s expression a little obtuse. “What’s wrong?” she asked.
He opened his mouth, trying to say something, but could not utter a word.
Summer had sensed the abnormality, her voice announcing her worries. “Are you alright?”
It was only after two seconds that Leonardo found his voice. “I’m okay.”
Leonardo tried to move his stiffened body and held her up. As crowds started to form around the accident scene, he held her hand and brought her back to the car. Through the car window he looked at the car that had nearly hit them. It was not an accident. Coming at that speed, the driver must have put the pedal to the metal to kill Summer.
A vengeful expression flashed across his eyes as he took out his mobile phone to call Tim.
“Come to the Golden Cauldron,” he told Tim.
After that, he made another two phone calls.
Summer could vaguely hear what he said. “No police report. This is personal. Keep your eye on the person.” When he finally hung up, she asked, “Just now—”
“Go to the hospital.” Leonardo cut her off.
She had noticed Leonardo’s face; it was pale like a sheet of paper. She thought he was hurt, but there was no blood on him, his body moment was normal, he should be fine. So she did not ask again,
As soon as they arrived at the hospital, he pushed her into the emergency room.
“Do a full body check-up.”
Summer looked back at him, struck dumb. “I’ve not felt anything wrong. I’m fine—”
All of a sudden, Leonardo said something irrelevant to the situation. “If you don’t feel like having a baby now, we’ll postpone it.”
“What?”
He ignored her question this time as he hurried the doctor to give her a check-up. She placed her hand against her forehead, and then said to the doctor, “Doctor, I’m fine. Just pretend that you have done all the check-ups when I am out of here.”
The doctor pushed his glasses up his nose, appearing hesitant.
She looked at the doctor with a pleading face. She was not hurt and did not need any check-up. It was too troublesome.
The doctor frowned as if he was seriously weighing the feasibility of what Summer told him. At last, in front of her anticipative face, the doctor shook his head with no expression on his face. “I can’t do that,” the doctor said.
Summer was surprised that there was still a doctor with ethics.
Just then, the doctor added, “This hospital is owned by Emerson Corporation. If I do that, I’ll lose my job.”
She knew Emerson Corporation was a conglomerate, but it never crossed her mind that the Emersons even owned a hospital. In that case, this doctor should know Leonardo and the earlier news, but at least the doctor was honest.
…
There was a lengthy list of check-ups, but since Summer was from the Emerson family, and the Emersons owned the hospital, the service was impeccable.
Other patients would have to make appointments to perform this full-body check-up, and it took a long time. But Summer had gotten it done in just a while.
Leonardo was by her side all the time. Luckily the doctor did not agree to her suggestion to fake her check-up. Now she was waiting for the report.
She looked over at Leonardo. “Do you want to do a check-up, too?”
“That won’t be necessary.” As if he had thought of something, his voice became softer as he spoke. “I’m fine. I do a full-body check-up every year.”
“OK.” That made sense; most people were having regular check-ups. She suddenly thought of what Leonardo said before doing the check-up.
“What did you mean earlier?” she asked.
“It means exactly what you are thinking.” There were no changes in his expression, but his voice was apparently tense.
Before this, he wanted to impregnate her and did not even allow her to go out. How come he suddenly had a change of heart? His capriciousness was even more difficult to fathom than women.
They both fell into silence. The doctor came out with her medical check-up report, looking hesitant.
Leonardo’s expression turned stern, his voice cold. “Get straight to the point.”
The doctor pushed his glasses up his nose and swallowed hard. “Mrs. Emerson is healthy. Just that…”
Leonardo shot the doctor a look. “Can’t you tell it all at once?”
“It seems Mrs. Emerson is pregnant. I need to do one more test to confirm.” The doctor braced himself and finished the sentence. After that he kept his head down and did not utter a sound. He was seeing Mr. and Mrs. Emerson for the first time, and sure enough, Mr. Emerson had lived up to the legend; he was as cold as he was scary, the doctor thought to himself.
Suddenly, there was silence in the room. Summer could not think straight now. She was pregnant? After Leonardo told her that there was no hurry for it?
“Really? Doctor, are you sure about it?” She had been confined to the house recently, but she and Leonardo had also not been making out during all that time. Could it be earlier when they did it without protection? But how could it be so easy?
“That’s why we have to perform a detailed test on Mrs. Emerson before we know the exact result.”
“Do it,” said Leonardo. His voice had softened a lot. He even sounded elated.
Summer pursed her lips. She could only get another test. When the result came out, Summer was still a little struck dumb.
“Congratulations! Mrs. Emerson is pregnant for sure.”
Leonardo took the test report in his hand, looking emotionless. After reading it, he nodded.
However, Summer was in no mood to study his expression. When Leonardo brought her out of the hospital and back into the car, her mind was still drifting elsewhere.
Although she was not prepared to have a baby this early, she would accept it and give birth to the child when she came to that point. But still, the feeling was too surreal. Leonardo still got what he wanted even though he had told her she could choose not to have a baby earlier.
She turned her head and looked out the window as she instinctively placed her hand on her tummy.
“Not happy?” Leonardo suddenly spoke with his low voice.
“What about you? You happy?” She turned her head to face him, her eyes cold.
He was suddenly uptight, saying nothing.
Just then, her mobile phone rang. It was Jessica.
“Where are you guys? I’m at the Golden Cauldron now!”
“I’m pregnant.”
Summer’s nonchalant voice got on Jessica’s nerves. “What are you talking about? Say that again! I don’t f*cking believe it!” Jessica could not help swearing.
The way she talked sounded exactly like Carl. They were made from the same mold.
“I’m pregnant,” Summer repeated.
Since Summer did not sound like she was kidding, Jessica finally believed her.
“Then… do you want to keep it?”
“If not?” Summer’s lips curled up in a forced smile. Unbeknownst to her, beside her, Leonardo had clenched his hands into fists.
