Summer felt a little embarrassed, but she still thought it better to be safe than sorry.
Opening the front passenger door, she got into the car. It would not feel appropriate if she sat in the rear seat; that would make Adams look like her chauffeur, she figured.
As the car drove steadily forward, she took out a mobile phone and returned Jessica’s call. There was no answer from her. Summer started to get butterflies in her stomach. Had something happened to Jessica again? Just then, Jessica called, and she answered at the speed of light.
“Jessica!”
“Summer, where are you? I called your mobile, but it was off.” Jessica sounded a little serious.
Had something really happened? There were even more butterflies in her stomach now. “I was on the plane just now. What happened?”
“Didn’t you watch the news…” Jessica paused suddenly, as though she did not know how to continue.
“What news?” Summer started to have a bad feeling.
“It’s Laura…” The words were stuck in her throat, and she was getting irritated. “I’m sending you some photos. Take a look for yourself.”
The line went dead, and Summer received a notification on her mobile phone in no time. She logged in to her Wechat and saw the few photos Jessica had sent her. They were screenshots of news and Weibo pictures. Summer had to zoom in to get a better view of the content.
“Actress and a wealthy young man meet secretly in the mansion…”
There was nothing concrete in the article; it was all speculation. However, Summer recognized the woman and the mansion in the background in one of the photos.
She had met Laura a few times and left a deep but bad impression on her. Hence, she could recognize the woman with sunglasses at first glance. It was Laura.
Meanwhile, the mansion in the background was Leonardo’s mansion. She remembered that Laura had gone to see her in Jarrett Group, not only to apologize to her, which was very much out of her character, but also bring her some expensive gifts to show her “sincerity”.
At the time, she already thought Laura was up to no good, and when it came to Leonardo, she assumed that as long as she declined Laura, everything would be fine. Never did she expect that Laura would approach Leonardo in his mansion just like she had thought.
In the eyes of some people, even if Leonardo was ugly and impotent, his identity as the young master of the Emerson family was enough to make women find him an attractive and worthwhile target.
Now, Summer had a problem sorting out her feelings. Was this the reason Leonardo did not come to pick her up from the airport?
There were more screenshots of articles about the identity of Laura and the mansion’s owner. The analyzes seemed to be based on well-grounded arguments. Had Summer not known Leonardo beforehand, she would have believed the nonsense that “he is a limp d*ck but lecherous and would make do with any woman”.
Leonardo behaved like a hungry wolf in bed, but he would not make do with any woman. He could have any woman he liked if he wanted to. He did not lack choices.
In her mind, Summer rebutted every single word in the Weibo post while Jessica sent her more of them.
“I knew it. When Vicky and Laura came together, they would be up to no good. That woman is ambitious!”
“I should have kicked her out of the entertainment industry last time!”
“Summer? Did you read my messages? I think even if Big Boss wants a woman, he wouldn’t look for a woman like Laura. It would at least be someone younger, prettier, and more famous.”
Summer forced a smile, wondering if that was how Jessica usually consoled someone.
Adams saw her changing facial expressions and asked with concern. “What happened?”
“Nothing.” She glanced up at Adams, but her fingers were typing a message to Jessica.
“Haven’t these news articles and Weibo posts been taken down?”
“They were taken down long ago,” Jessica replied at warp speed.
“Thank God!”
“I’m on my way home. Chat later after I ask Leonardo about it.” After sending her last message, Summer put down her phone.
“How is Douglas doing?” Not seeing him for the past few days, she had started to miss him.
“I hired a cook for him. He is always on his games and movies. He told me a few days ago that he wanted to go back to Leonardo’s place.” Adams wore a forced smile. “It makes me look bad as an elder brother.”
Despite his constant complaint about not getting his pocket money, and how fierce and inhumane Leonardo was, Douglas still could not wait to go back to him. But his excuses went something like missing Summer’s cooking and that he had left behind his textbooks there. With all that said, he was more willing to stay with Leonardo than with Adams.
Instead of letting Adams send her home, she asked to be dropped somewhere in the city and took a cab to go home.
“Welcome home, Mrs. Emerson!”
A bodyguard came out, greeted her, and helped her with the luggage as soon as she got out of the cab.
As she walked inside, she asked, “Is the young master home?”
“The young master went out early in the morning,” the bodyguard said forthrightly.
Ava came to the doorway, greeting her, “I heard voices just now. Did you take the morning flight? You must be hungry, I guess. I cooked congee this morning, but the young master just sipped it. Let me reheat it for you.”
“Thank you, Ava.”
Summer went upstairs to get changed. When she was done and opening the door, she was swept into a pair of warm arms. The familiar scent wafted into her nostrils, and she wrapped her arms around him.
Leonardo lowered his head, kissing on the hair on the top of her head. “How did you come back? Tim told me he couldn’t find you at the airport.”
“I bumped into Adams at the airport, so he gave me a ride to the city. Then I took a cab home,” Summer told him frankly. But she started to sense his expression changing. He did not seem too happy.
“Adams didn’t mean it at the party last time. We just bumped into each other at the airport, and he offered to give me a ride. I thought it was inappropriate to say no.”
Summer explained patiently, but she admitted that she was in a fit of pique at the time. He had promised to pick her up at the airport, and she was so looking forward to it. But then when the plane landed, he told her he was not coming.
Leonardo just replied with an “Mm”. While Summer was still wondering what that meant, he came down with his kisses. She pushed him away, though.
“Ava is waiting for us downstairs. I skipped my breakfast, and now I’m starving.”
He did not feel like letting her go yet, but in the end, he relented.
