Summer read almost all of the posts. She consoled herself, saying that it was a blessing in disguise. If she had a social media account, the entire online community would have swarmed her with nasty remarks. It was hard not to get angry when she read such vicious verbal abuse. Summer could not help but call Vicky.
The phone rang for a long while before Vicky answered. “What a surprise to have you call me. What is this about?” Her voice was soft and composed, as though she did not know what was going on in cyberspace.
Summer sneered, the corner of her mouth cocked at an angle. She fought back her anger and made herself sound natural and cool.
“The hot searches on social media, and the news online; what’s going on?” She had checked. It was not just on social media, but several media outlets had also published news about her. It was all over the place. People generally enjoyed reading gossip, especially family squabbles of the rich. Therefore, the media did not want to miss the opportunity.
There was an added nonchalance in her voice when Vicky said, “What news? I’m busy. I need to help Dad manage his company while I wait for my brother to graduate, unlike you with so much free time to watch entertainment news.” Her casual reply carried overtones of a superiority complex.
After she graduated, Vicky joined the management of the Jarrett Group. But Summer had gotten an entirely different treatment. Forget about the management, even when she requested to work in the lowest rung on the ladder, her mom, Karen dismissed her outright, telling her off, “You’re not as capable of your elder sis, you’d be no good. Find yourself a job outside.” Even her dad, Lynn never gave a damn about her studies and work.
Thinking of all that, anger almost rose to her nose. Forcing her words through her teeth, she said, “Don’t pretend anymore. I know you did it. I have no idea what you’re up to, but your dirty tricks aren’t going to work. I’m part of the Emerson family now. As much as they dislike me, they’re not going to let anyone defame me.”
Vicky’s expression changed. The Summer she knew was a dumb woman, but after Summer married into the Emerson family, she somehow became less stupid. Vicky had no idea how Summer had suddenly become smarter than before, but it was not a big deal to her. She had Summer’s lifeline in her hands.
The corner of her mouth quirked, and her voice was soft yet confident when she said, “Don’t you care about Karen?”
Every time she bossed Summer around, Summer would be obedient like a dog when Karen told her to do as she was told. So, she knew that Karen had a special place in Summer’s heart.
When Summer heard that, her grip on the phone tightened, and she pressed her lips together. “Whatever,” she said before hanging up.
As soon as she put down the phone, she felt someone looking at her. She looked up and saw that the door was open. A man was leaning on the door frame with his arms crossed. If that was not “Douglas”, who else would it be?
“How… How did you get in?” Summer was shocked. She had obviously locked the door when she went to bed last night.
Leonardo was swinging a key in his hand and cocking an eyebrow when he passingly said, “What do you think?”
“Get out!” Summer’s face flushed with anger. Where did that man get the key to her room?
