The chill breeze sweeps across his face as they speed away in the dead of night. The wind was loud in his ears, not loud enough to bury the sound of whistling, crackling, and a faint hum from above them. A dim light shone on them from behind, a car was catching up to them. Friday looked up to see what’s making the peculiar sound, “Adrian, are you seeing this?”
It never happened before, they never moved, not even a twitch. They were flying in the same direction as to where they were going. The dim light was getting brighter. Adrian pulled the clutch a little deeper. The floaters flew a little faster.
“What’s going on, Chief? What the hell were you talking about back there?” Jordan didn’t know what to think, he was following his gut feeling to get into the car instead of staying with his family. Esmee was helping Colby tying up a piece of cloth to his shoulder to stop the bleeding.
“Have you ever been to the garage basement, Jordan?”
Jordan looked in the rearview mirror, “No, I haven’t lived there for years, Chief … Did you go in there?”
Colby nodded, the pain was getting unbearable. “They’re going to kill them all, Jordan, it’s going to be a struggle of who’s going to be on top of the food chain and your dad has already made up his mind.”
Jordan was listening in disbelief, “What? What do you mean?” his eyes widen in the reflection of the rearview mirror.
He knew the situation was critical but it never crossed his mind that it might come to a point where they would consider something so horrific. It’s much too early to even think about it but apparently, his father was a man of vision, he knew there’s not much he can do to increase food supplies so he needed to adjust to the new circumstances.
“He’s been doing it for a while now, we have to find a way out of here … or otherwise …”
“We have to stop him!” Jordan exclaimed.
“It’s not that simple, once all the supplies are gone after no one is eating for days or weeks, they will reside to the same resort, it’s just a matter of time.”
Esmee listened in horror.
“He has half the men, half the guns, he owns the factories … I don’t know if we can afford to stand against him, Jordan.”
“There’s no turning back now, is there?” Jordan glanced at the rearview mirror and saw cars on their tail and at least two motorbikes. His father’s men were chasing them with guns, police sirens can be heard in the distance.
“You have to go to the island … find it, that’s our only resort, we can’t stay here anymore.” Colby peeked through the back window, they were still quite far.
“What about you? Are you going to the island too?” asked Jordan.
“No, I have to stay here, warn the people, protect them as much as I can, they are prey now, somebody needs to tell them that,” Colby winced at the pain of his wound.
They could see the trees standing tall like a wall of leaves, harboring a mystery on the other side of it. They would never be able to go through it by car, they have to go on foot. Adrian was still visible at the end of his headlights, he stepped on the gas.
As they got closer, they can see the electric wire fence installed along the tree lines. Adrian stopped his bike in front of it, threw a stick at the fence, it sparked.
“Shit!” he looked behind him, Jordan stopped Colby’s car and ran towards him.
“We can’t get through the wires!” Friday shouted.
A good right punch landed on Adrian’s face and surprised everyone. Esmee screamed as she ran out of the car. “That’s for sleeping with my girlfriend!”
It felt like a flash of lightning just struck his face, his brain turned off for a few seconds. He cupped his hands around his nose, his eyes watered and vision blurred.
“Are you out of your mind?” Friday screamed at his brother who looked like he was about to strike again. She pulled Jordan away from Adrian, “We have to get through the fences, Jordan, we have to leave!”
Esmee came rushing to Adrian, “Are you alright?” Adrian held his one hand up, still unable to speak.
Colby stumbled out of the car and moved to the front seat, “I’ll ram it with my car, get out of the way!!” The sirens wailed closer and the motorbike was visible.
The sound of gushing wind came from above and they looked up. One by one the floating shadows came storming against the fences. Sparks flew like fireworks, lit up the dark sky. They stepped back in amazement. Coby stopped to look at the burning fence with his jaw slightly opened.
“You have to go now,” said Jordan.
“What?? You’re coming too, right?” Esmee was hopeful.
Jordan looked at Colby struggling with his wounded shoulder, “I can’t … I have to stay here and help,” his voice trembled as he looked at Esmee with half his heart melted away. He was ready to let her go with Friday and Adrian. He knew it was the end of it, she made her choice the night she let him go.
Adrian grabbed his arm, “Come with us, Jordy … you can’t stay here.” The motorbike had almost arrived and the men were taking their guns out. Jordan pulled him to his chest, it was the warmest hug he ever gave to his blood brother.
Tears started to fill up his pupils, “Please take good care of them … I will never be able to live with myself if I leave now.”
Jordan cupped Adrian’s face with both his hands, “You’ve always taken care of me … I know they’ll be safe with you.”
It never occurred to Adrian that they would have to be separated, it would be the first time since they first met. Adrian nodded, he shuddered with a feeling he can’t describe.
Jordan moved to kiss Esmee on her sweet lips, he tasted her tears and tried to smile through his own, “I love you … even though you have your doubts, I do,” he knew there was no time for melancholy but he had to say goodbye to them.
“Friday … ” he hugged his sister tightly, “I know you’ll make it … go find that island and come back to save us all, will you?” Friday couldn’t let a single word out of her mouth, she nodded. “I’ll be here waiting, or I’ll go there and find you … when this is all over.”
He ran back to Colby’s car and took over the wheel. The men had arrived and started to open fire. Adrian, Esmee, and Friday ducked down away from the fence as Jordan rammed it down with Colby’s car. The police arrived and started firing at the men. The fences were down after the first blow and all three of them climbed over the car to get into the woods. Adrian took one last look at Jordan and Colby before he ran into the woods.
Jordan pulled the car back and ran over the men who were running after the three. Colby took out his gun and started shooting. The car took hits from the bullets but Jordan managed to dodge away and leave the area. They speed away to save themselves and ultimately the rest of Mofocity.
