A Night Visit

It was a quarter to Midnight, the day had ended hours ago for Mofonians, even the Night Dwellers were locked in their houses having a game night and watching movies. Colby couldn’t wait until morning to tell Matthew about his finding. A probable solution to the nightmare ahead of them. He heard someone was talking on the front lawn of The Cromwell Estate.
“Did you get any?” it was Matthew’s voice. “Yes, Sir, three,” a man answered. “Good … you know where to put them,” Matthew instructed. Colby stepped out from behind the bush where he parked his car, he saw the man whom he was talking to drove a box truck into the back garage of the estate. Matthew’s face turned white as paper, “CJ? What the hell? Were you sneaking up on me?” “No, sorry, did I startled you?” Matthew sighed in relief, “No, it’s just … it’s late … you know, crazy things happen in the dark.”
CJ took another look at the box truck that went to the garage but the doors were already closed. “My hunters … they just caught some bunnies for Jacob’s birthday.” “Jeez Matt … whose pet did he kidnap this time?”. Matt chuckled, “He happened to know someone who breeds bunnies near the woods, but they’re not for sale … so yeah …” he laughed at the fact.
They went inside to have some drinks over their conversation, “Speaking about the woods …” CJ told Matt what he just heard in the recordings and he would like to explore the possibility of some truth about the myth. Matt was skeptical about it, he’s heard all kinds of stories about the island even before the separation and it was likely just folklore that Mofonians love to indulge.
“I saw first hand what happened at the facility, those scientists with their experiments … huh … what a fucking mess they made, and I was the one who cleaned up their fuck ups,” he put ice in his drink and stir it with his index finger. “There is no island … they promised me that island if I could find it, I invested a lot of money on that search … but they couldn’t find anything … it was bullshit … those crazy people were delusional and they took a chance on that and cost me a fortune,” he drank his glass empty. “Biggest mistake I ever made,” he added.
“I think that boy is trying to find it,” said CJ.
“Who? What boy?”
“The Addams boy, he was the one who dug out the files at the asylum, I think he’s trying to find it.” Matthew paused for a moment, his mind racing, “Isn’t he a suspect for that body you found?”
“Not in the meantime, insufficient evidence and … I questioned him myself, I think he was telling the truth.”
Matthew laughed at CJ’s answer, “You have one suspect and you let him go? That’s not good police work buddy … look … if he can find this island then good, we’ll just follow his lead, but … you need to make an arrest soon CJ, people are concerned with what’s happening lately.”
“Yeah, but I’m not going to arrest an innocent man.” Matthew put his hand on CJ’s shoulder, “You only need one arrest to ease everyone’s concern … and then you can figure out who really did it without people nagging on your tail.”
CJ took a spin on his drink, he was more interested in looking for the island rather than arresting Adrian for something he didn’t do. He shook his head, “I will get more leads … the body … it wasn’t done by one person, something’s not sitting right with me with that one … ”
Matthew leaned closer to him, “Arrest the boy … announce it to the people and then get him to tell you about how to get to the island.” CJ looked him in the eyes, that was the kind of person Matthew Cromwell was, he never completely agreed with him but somehow CJ never disappointed him.
He left the estate feeling uncertain. He walked out the door, past the bushes, and sat behind his wheel. He glanced at the door of the back garage and turned on his engine. Friday sneaked out from the house after his car drove away, she was listening to the conversation the whole time.
