Amelia strolled leisurely along the well-lit corridor of the bustling office, savouring each delectable bite of her glazed doughnut. The tantalising aroma filled the air as she made her way, a small indulgence amid her busy day. As she approached a closed door, a muffled commotion reached her ears, piquing her curiosity.
Intrigued, Amelia’s curiosity propelled her to investigate further. She reached out, slowly pushing open the door, which yielded effortlessly, as if inviting her inside. Peering through the narrow opening, she caught sight of Claudia, her colleague, engaged in an animated conversation over the telephone. A hint of jubilation adorned Claudia’s countenance, her voice infused with delight.
“No need for that again,” Claudia’s melodic voice chimed, punctuated by an enchanting giggle. “Everything is fine now.”
Amelia’s brows furrowed inquisitively. What was Claudia referring to? Who was she conversing with on the other end of the line? Clutching her doughnut, Amelia remained concealed behind the partially opened door, eavesdropping intently, eager to unravel the mystery unfolding before her.
The tantalising conversation continued to unfold, each word intensifying Amelia’s curiosity. Claudia’s voice resonated, though slightly muffled. Eager to catch every detail, Amelia leaned closer, her senses acutely attuned to every syllable.
“Yea, she doesn’t remember anything again, so we are good,” Claudia declared, her voice tinged with a mix of relief and satisfaction.
Amelia’s eyes widened in confusion. Who was Claudia referring to? Her mind raced, attempting to piece together the fragments of the puzzling conversation. Determined to glean more information, she inched closer, her doughnut momentarily forgotten.
Suddenly, a gentle tap on her shoulder interrupted Amelia’s concentration. Irritated, she swatted away the intrusive gesture, eager to resume her surreptitious eavesdropping. But the tap persisted, prompting Amelia to groan audibly in exasperation.
“Not now, Laila,” Amelia huffed impatiently, assuming it was her coworker attempting to divert her attention. Oblivious to the true identity of the interrupter, Amelia disregarded the interruption, focusing solely on Claudia’s conversation.
However, the tapping persisted, growing slightly more insistent. Amelia’s frustration mounting, she finally relented, her gaze shifting from the partially open door to the unexpected visitor standing before her.
“Liam!” Amelia gasped, her heart skipping a beat as her eyes met his curious gaze. The surprise of his presence sent a jolt of both shock and intrigue coursing through her veins.
Liam, her boss and confidant, stood before her, his penetrating gaze searching for answers to the questions brewing in his mind.
Amelia blinked, momentarily taken aback by Liam’s unexpected appearance.
His presence added an additional layer of intrigue to the already captivating scene unfolding within the office.
Liam, with his piercing eyes and enigmatic demeanour, exuded an aura of mystery that Amelia couldn’t resist.
“What’s going on, Amelia?” Liam inquired, his voice laced with genuine curiosity and a hint of concern. “Why are you eavesdropping on Claudia?”
Amelia’s mind raced, attempting to find the right words to explain her actions.
She hesitated for a brief moment, her gaze shifting between Liam and the partially open door.
Sensing her internal struggle, Liam extended a comforting hand, his touch offering both reassurance and a gentle nudge to share her thoughts.
“I… I overheard Claudia speaking on the phone,” Amelia confessed, her voice barely above a whisper. “She said something about someone not remembering anything, and it piqued my curiosity.”
Liam’s expression softened, his eyes filled with understanding. He nodded, signalling his willingness to join her in uncovering the truth even though he knew she was the one Claudia was referring to but didn’t know why.
“I understand your curiosity, Amelia,” Liam responded, his tone comforting. “But let’s remember to respect Claudia’s privacy. Perhaps we should approach her directly and ask for an explanation.”
Amelia nodded in agreement, appreciating Liam’s rational perspective.
They shared a silent understanding, their unspoken bond propelling them forward. Together, they moved away from the partially open door, leaving the mystery behind for the time being.
Amelia’s mind continued to wander, contemplating the enigmatic conversation she had overheard. Questions tugged at her thoughts, intertwining with a growing sense of intrigue.
What secrets lay concealed within Claudia’s phone call? And who was the person she spoke of, the one who seemingly couldn’t remember?
While Liam walked alongside Claudia, his mind couldn’t help but wonder why she was discussing Amelia’s memory loss with someone on the phone. He contemplated asking her about it later but decided to brush it off for the time being.
“Uhm… Amelia,” Liam called out, trying to capture her attention as they strolled together. Lost in her own thoughts, she didn’t respond.
With a hopeful smile on his face, Liam mustered the courage to ask, “Will you have dinner with me?” However, Amelia remained unresponsive.
Observing her distant demeanor, Liam reached out and gently grasped her shoulder, causing her to flinch. “What… what?” Amelia’s voice trailed off, causing Liam to sneer in frustration.
“I just asked you a question, and you weren’t even paying attention,” Liam frowned.
“Oh, I’m sorry. What did you say again?” Amelia urged him to repeat the question.
“I said, will you have…”
“Amelia!” Laila’s voice pierced the air as she shouted Amelia’s name from a distance, drawing her attention.
Amelia turned her gaze and spotted Laila waving at her, beckoning her to join her.
“Next time, Liam, I have to go,” Amelia hastily remarked before running off to Laila, without waiting for Liam’s response.
“What the heck?” Liam scoffed, his eyes fixed on Amelia and Laila engaged in conversation before eventually walking away.
“She didn’t even give me a chance to talk. At least she should have heard me out. Even though she doesn’t remember me, I’m still her boss,” Liam whined to himself, feeling somewhat dejected, as he continued down the corridor.
Passing by him without even glancing his way, Elliot reminded Liam, “You have a doctor’s appointment at 4 p. m., mister.”
“Oh yeah,” Liam agreed, acknowledging Elliot’s comment even though he had already moved on.
Arriving at the hospital, Liam was guided by several nurses to the doctor’s office. Although he didn’t require their assistance, they persistently offered to help him, murmuring among themselves about how attractive he was.
“Here we are. The doctor is waiting for you,” a nurse informed him, gesturing towards the door.
“Thanks,” Liam replied.
“You’re welcome, Mr. Scott,” the nurse flashed him a grin before shyly stepping away.
“Okay, that was cringe,” Liam sneered to himself before pushing open the door.
“Oh, Mr. Scott, nice to see you,” the doctor greeted Liam, rising from his seat, but Liam gestured for him to remain seated.
“So, tell me, doc, how is my health? Any changes?” Liam asked, hoping for positive news.
“Well, yes, Mr. Scott. Looking at your recent report, it seems you might not need a heart transplant after all. Instead, you could undergo heart surgery,” the doctor informed him.
“Well, that is good news, I guess,” Liam sighed in relief.
“It is, Mr. Scott. Just continue to find happiness and avoid excessive stress,” the doctor advised.
“Sure thing, doc. Anyway, I have to go now,” Liam stood up, ready to leave.
“Goodbye, Mr. Scott,” the doctor bid him farewell as Liam exited the room.
Deep in thought about the doctor’s words and his improving health, Liam couldn’t help but attribute his progress to the joy he felt whenever Amelia was by his side.
“Liam… Liam,” a voice called out, causing Liam to halt in his tracks as he heard someone utter his name from a room he was passing by.
“Who is that?” Liam questioned, receiving no immediate response. He contemplated leaving but the voice called out to him again
Liam let out a sigh and gave in to his curiosity. He decided to enter the room, intrigued to discover who was calling out to him. As he stepped inside, he noticed a woman lying in a hospital bed, her face covered by an oxygen mask and various wires attached to her.
A wave of sympathy washed over Liam, and he wondered if this was the person who had been calling him. Strangely, he felt a sense of familiarity, as if he knew her from somewhere. Determined to catch a glimpse of her face, he cautiously approached the bed.
With each step he took, the memories started flooding back, crashing into his mind like a tidal wave. As he finally laid eyes on the woman’s face, his eyes widened in disbelief.
“Mom…” Liam whispered, his voice trembling with emotion.
