Chapter Thirty-Nine – Not a Wade.
Connor ran his hands through his hair, looking outside the window. Girls, they would be the doom of him.
The junior girls were playing basketball outside so he watched them from the corner of his eyes.
He’d be graduating soon and leave the cursed presence and with his current heartbreak, he was more excited to be leave.
Someone walked in. “Connor, don’t let that chick bother you. They are many fishes in the sea.”
It was his best friend, Bliss, she plopped down besides him, unpacking the snacks she came in with. “Hungry?”
His eyes remained on the junior girls playing basketball, they were now bickering about something. “No, thanks. I’d be heading home soon.”
Bliss stopped the burger going to her mouth and frowned. “Huh? Because of that bitch you are going home early? What about the anime you’re watching at my house?”
Connor faced her with a sorry smile. “Right, but I’m really not in the mood now. Start without me. I’m really sorry…”
“Ugh!” Bliss dropped the burger on the table and stood up. “Yeah right! I told you not to date her! She only dated you cos you’re a Wade!”
Connor’s eyes widened as his annoyance heightened. Could she be less blunt? Why rub it on his face that he was used?
“I’m not even a Wade so she’s wrong. I’m a Jefferson. Wade is my aunt’s family.” He replied silently.
Bliss rolled her eyes, biting into her burger. “You know what I mean! You’re related to them, they are powerful and wealthy. Any girl will be interested in you for that, yet you fell for it.”
“I like her, okay! I wasn’t just dating her cos she wanted to date me! I actually like her!” he barked back, swinging his bag behind him and stomping out.
“You keep saying ‘like’. Haven’t you gotten over her?” Bliss frowned. Connor gave no reply as he left.
Bliss shook her head had yelled after him. “After sulking come to my home by evening. We’d start that anime together!”
He slammed the door behind him without saying a word.
Sometimes his best friend could be bad to him like other girls. He couldn’t talk to her about his heartbreak as she’d fault him. It wasn’t his fault he had feelings.
A car honk brought him back to reality. His eyes stung as he looked up, he fought back the tears. Damien was resting on the car, looking at him worriedly.
Connor forced a smile. “Hello, why did you come?”
He sighted Arya inside the car and his smile fell. “Oh, you came with him. I’m sorry for the trouble.”
Damien held his cousin’s hand, while opening the car door for him. “I didn’t know you have a girlfriend.”
“Had.” he corrected, climbing into the car.
The junior girls noticed at the basketball court gawked at him and his cousin. Connor gritted his teeth. They really only cared about him because he was related to the Wades.
He slammed the car door shut and Damien frowned slightly. The car left the school premises. Arya watched Connor from the side mirror.
“You’d be fine okay? Maybe it just didn’t work out.” she consoled, not knowing the circumstances of the heartbreak.
“Yeah, that could be it. It’s not because she didn’t like you, she would, you’re an amazing guy.” Damien added.
Connor stayed calm. They had no idea. And he didn’t want them to. “Thanks. I’d be fine. Just need a little sleep.” He looked outside the window. “We are heading home, right?”
Damien glanced at his wife looking outside the mirror, admiring the tall buildings. He smiled, then replied Connor. “Definitely. Arya’s sister, Anna, was kidnapped earlier today.”
Arya withdraw from the window with a sullen face. Connor snapped his head to see her. “Really?”
She nodded. “And I think the culprit wants me as well. I’ve been receiving weird texts and addresses. The person must know me really well.”
Connor breathed in and out. “That’s scary, on so many levels. Maybe it’s a family member? Do you have bad…?”
Damien frowned at him and he stopped halfway.
It wasn’t a family member, at least not in this case. Damien knew it’d be related to Debby. More related will be Debby’s criminal uncle who dotes on her.
Her father might not have anything to do with his shady brother but Debby always ran to her uncle when she wanted some shady deeds done.
He had seen it firsthand when he was robbed in China and in few minutes, the robber and his items were brought to his hotel room by Debby and her Uncle’s boys.
They were near invincible and it was futile involving the police, or Interpol in his current state. They had connections all over.
With how dangerous they were, he didn’t want to involve Arya more. He’d handle it himself and make Anna do the same, for her sister’s protection.
“Family member? You think? Well, I have a shitty aunt but she’d never… wait!” Arya sat up straight. “My cousin was acting weird recently…”
“Arya please.” Damien pleaded. “Let’s not jump into conclusion yet. I told you I had a lead, right?”
Arya bit down her remaining words and pouted. Lucy still had to answer to her on her sudden niceness. Her head nearly hit the glass of the windshield as the car came to an abrupt stop.
“Oh my, I’m sorry!” Damien apologized immediately, his eyes still on the sight before him. Connor hid behind his cousin’s chair, staring, with shaky eyes at the sight before him.
They just drove into their estate street and three of the policemen were shot dead, turned face down and staining the green grass with blood.
“Call Selena and my mother, quick!” Damien yelled.
Connor pulled his phone and began tapping.
Arya held her hands in her mouth, tears nearly brimming out of her eyes. She had told those policemen goodbye as she left for university that day!
“Selena didn’t pick up but texted she’s in a spa. Aunt’s phone rung but she didn’t pick up either.” Connor reported.
It wasn’t good enough. Damien came down from the car, to the amazement of Arya. “Those kidnappers forge texts, they could have Selena and had faked that text.”
Connor’s eyes enlarged. So things were that bad?
The car door opened and Arya jumped down.
“It’s me they want, right? I don’t know why but they should leave your sister and mom out of this!” she yelled.
Damien’s legs got heavy, he couldn’t go into the house to check if his family were in there.
What if he met a big mess? They were all dead? And his servants too? Were they killed?
He couldn’t move, nothing moved around him either.
