He rubs the back of his neck. “I didn’t just have you come back for him. I know he needs you, but I did too. You are my mate. I felt your absence as much as he did.”
“Markus.”
He holds a hand up. “I know there is nothing that we can do about it at the moment but that doesn’t mean that I didn’t miss you.” He takes the tray from my hand and sets it on a side table in the hall. He takes my hand afterwards. “I found a way to break the bond, but it is difficult. It wouldn’t be good to do while he is sick like this. I know it will have to wait, but it will work. You can be my mate, just like you were supposed to be.”
“Even though I am pregnant with his baby.”
He brings his body closer to mine. Sliding a hand behind my neck. “Even then. I love you Sophia.” His lips slide along mine. “You do still love me right?”
I close my eyes. “Yes, I still love you Markus. I never stopped.” But I take a step back. “But right now you know that Darius needs me. I can’t leave him like this.”
He looks on the verge of tears. “I know. If he wasn’t my brother I would have told you to let him die a hundred times over. His only saving grace is that he is my blood. As soon as he is well enough, you will be my mate.”
I ran into Markus’s arms. I have never loved someone so much in my life. I am crying a little. He is holding me tight. We don’t stop until there is a throat clearing down the hall. We both look to see the Alpha with the pack doctor.
I turn and address them both. Wiping my face of all traces of tears. “Good to see you again doctor.”
“I wish it was under better circumstances.” His voice is somber.
I led the way back to the room. “Let’s discuss this with Darius. He has agreed to what I decide.” I can hear the Alpha let out a breath of relief as we step into the room.
I close the door behind us to give us some privacy and turn on the light. It has been off this whole time, I figured Darius liked it that way. But I am done hiding. “Darius the doctor is here.”
He sits up on the bed. “I know he is here. It’s not like he is going to tell me anything different.”
I take a seat on the bed. “Well, doctor, you can enlighten me on how things are going.”
The doctor takes a seat in one of the chairs by the table. “Well, as I told Darius yesterday, the best option here is surgery. His body doesn’t seem to be responding to the medication well. He insisted that it was because you were gone. But the fact that he hasn’t been eating or sleeping very well. He has been in this room without any sunlight or even shifting. His emotional state hasn’t helped his physical state.”
“So, what do you suggest that we do?”
“Continue with the medication for the next week. With you here I would like to see if his emotional state will improve. If we can improve that then he will have a greater success rate with the surgery. At this point if I was to take him there, I don’t think he would survive.”
“I see, then we will continue the course this week and I will work on improving his health in the meantime. That is what I am here for.”
I feel his hand reach for mine. The doctor gives me a smile. “Thank you. I understand that you are going to need prenatal care soon. Feel free to stop by the clinic when you get a chance. We want you in good health as well.”
I look at Darius. “Did you tell everyone?”
