Chapter 5

Book:Fleeing My Mate Published:2024-6-2

He drives us back to the packhouse. I never really came here before, there wasn’t a need. Even during gatherings my aunt and uncle insisted that I stayed home. They didn’t want me to embarrass them. Now here I am being introduced as the Alpha’s second son’s mate.
Darius comes around to my side of the truck and takes my hand to help me down. Ever the picture of the perfect mate. Only I know differently. Only I know that this is not a normal relationship. He holds my hand walking into the pack house only for us to be stopped at the door. “You’re serious, this is your mate? I thought you were messing with me.” A blond girl glares at me. I only know her from the times she would dump my lunch on my lap.
Darius growls. “Watch what you say Amber. At least I can say this about my mate. She doesn’t fuck around with any dick she can smell.” He pulls me further away from Amber. I guess that is her name. She still gives me a death glare.
He kisses my fingers. Is that supposed to make me feel better? I could care less, if she wants him then she can have him. Please take him. So then he can leave me alone. I want to be free of Darius as soon as possible. The sooner he moves on the better. I know that isn’t a wolf thing but I can hope right. “Don’t worry about Amber, she is just jealous. She wanted to be my mate.”
I mumble so that only he can hear me. “Why didn’t you pick her?”
“Because you are my mate.” He smirks at me. Yeah, that is not a fucking answer.
He leads me into an office on the first floor. It’s empty inside but I am assuming it is the Alphas office. It screams power. There are three leather chairs facing a huge oak desk. Files are packed high on the desk and a high back leather chair sits behind it. A large window covers the back wall. I can see pictures on the shelves, walls and his desk.
Darius lets go of my hand. “Wait here. I am going to get my father.”
I just nod and stay in the room. I decided to look around at the pictures. Curiosity I guess. I see a lot of pictures of Darius at various stages of his life. On the desk is a picture that really captures my attention. It’s the boy. He is with a younger Darius, but the boy is there. That means that Darius knows the boy. I don’t know when I picked up the picture but it is in my hand when the door opens again.
A large man with a pleasant smile on his face comes into the room followed by Darius. He is an older version of Darius, just as large. Only he has brown eyes, they look really kind. He points to the picture in my hand. “That is the last picture of both my boys before Markus went off to training. He is back next week.”
He takes the picture from me looking at it fondly. “Isn’t this going to be a great week for the pack. Darius finds his mate and Markus comes home. Hopefully Markus will find his mate when he comes home too.” He sets it back down on his desk. Then he sits in the big high back chair. “So, tell me about yourself.” He seems really eager to know about me. I can’t understand why anyone would want to know about me.
I take a seat in the leather chair in front of the desk. Darius comes and takes the seat next to it, pulling my hand into his lap. He must have stopped to get a new shirt because he isn’t shirtless anymore. “Well, um… Alpha sir… there isn’t much to tell.”
He waves it off. “Oh, and modest too. Just what Darius needs. Where do you live?”
“With my Aunt and Uncle on the far side of the pack lands.” His pleasant smile is putting me at ease a little. At least the Alpha isn’t a psycho.
“I think I remember you. Your parents died in that car crash about fifteen years ago, correct.” He gives me a sad look now.
“Yes sir.” I nod my head.
“Well, I am glad that your aunt and uncle took such good care of you. I haven’t seen much of you over the years, but I am sure it is because you were focusing on education. Darius says you are first in your class.”
“Yes sir.” Sure why not? I am first in our class, but that isn’t because I wanted to focus on my studies rather than do stuff with the pack.
He gives me another kind smile. “Enough with that sir stuff. Call me dad. You are marrying my son after all.”
Just then a mass of red hair runs into the office. It’s attached to a woman about the Alpha’s age. Her green eyes are the same as Darius’s. She flashes me a huge grin and pulls me into a standing hug, thus taking my hand from Darius. “Oh, my goddess, he found you. You are so beautiful.” She cups my face and continues to beam. Then she gets a puzzled look on her face. “Why are you wearing Darius’s shirt?”
Darius rubs the back of his neck. “I got a little carried away mom.”
She laughs. “Well, it’s understandable. He told us that he would catch your scent sometimes at school, but couldn’t find you. What are the odds that he would find you on the last day of school?” She seems giddy and excited. I guess from her standpoint it is exciting. I would want my son to find his mate. To her that is all that happened. Not that her son would bother me on a daily basis.
“Yeah, crazy.” I say. I have no idea what else I am supposed to say. Darius gave me no preambles for this. I am rolling with the flow at this point. Whatever comes out of my mouth.
“Did you scent him too?” She asks. Still holding my face.
“Yeah, I guess we kept missing each other.”
Darius sighs and takes my hand, pulling me away from his mom. “Mom, she was really focused on her studies and you know I wasn’t ever really into that stuff. We just were never in the same area’s at the same time. But today I passed her locker when she was cleaning it out and just knew it was her.” He pulls me into his arms. I want to gag.
His mom claps her hands and almost looks like she is going to cry. “My little boy is getting so big.” Yeah, your little boy is insane.
He groans. “Mom.”
She waved him off and sniffled a little. “Well, I will let you get settled. You don’t live in the packhouse so I assume you need to go pack. Then later we can sit down and talk more.”
I bow my head. “Thank you Luna.”
She chuckles. “Oh, call me mom. I have a daughter.” She squeals in excitement.
Darius chuckles and takes my hand. “Well, dad, mom if you will excuse us, we do need to get her things from her aunt and uncles.”
His mom smiles. “Yes of course. Hurry back. I want to get to know this girl.”
I smile and leave with Darius. He kisses my fingers. “You were such a good girl.” He purrs at me.
I am so repulsed right now.
