Fu Yao calmly replied looking at her back.
“So, we are square now.”
Fu Yao walked away from Shen Qieyi. She was left by herself in dismay. Shortly after, she fell onto the floor and stared helplessly into the space.
She didn’t understand what he meant by that.
He told her that after the divorce. Does that mean every suffering she went through was his doing?
Shen Qieyi wanted to laugh at it. But she can’t bring herself to.
When he hated her, he cruelly humiliated her. Now that he didn’t hate her, he revealed the truth to her that he should have had that affair so he could hurt her.
Fu Yao was being too cruel to her.
What made him so cruel that he trampled on her heart? What made him speak of the truth so casually?
His hurtful action caused her endless pain.
Shen Qieyi had no one to rely on anymore. However, even when she was at her worst, she never regretted meeting him.
At this moment, she wished she was still a child, carefree without a broken heart, without sad tears.
He made her doubtful of everything from the beginning until now. Every gain and loss, was it worth it?
If she had a chance to start over, she would choose not to love him again.
At the same time, things were going on in the Tipsy Lounge.
Zhong Han was here acting intimately with a couple of ladies. He then joined his friends sitting in a booth in the middle of the lounge.
Zhong Han had been glancing at the entrance the whole night. He tilted his head and muttered to his friend, “Why does Fu Yao suddenly invite us for a drink?”
While Zhong Han was confused, Fu Yao appeared by the door later than promised.
Zhong Han stood up and thumped his chest. “F*ck, what’s wrong with you?”
Fu Yao walked past him and calmly sat down. “I’ve gone to tie up the loose end.”
“Your ex-wife?” Zhong Han handed him the drink while nagging him.
Fu Yao nodded as he replied, “Yes.”
Zhong Han choked and didn’t know what to say. He could only offer him drinks. “That’s alright, as long as it’s settled. Drink up.”
Fu Yao picked up his glass and gulped it down. His phone on the table vibrated suddenly. Zhong Han hastily grabbed it as soon as he saw it. His heart skipped a beat as he glanced at the caller ID.
Zhong Han nudged Fu Yao, “Hey, it’s Fu Laoye. Wanna answer?”
Fu Laoye was supposed to be resting at this hour. There must be something urgent if he called.
Two of them looked at each other with the same thinking.
Fu Yao took over the phone and went to a quieter corner to take the call.
“Grandpa.” Fu Yao didn’t have time to think of a strategy but hastily picked up the call.
“You brat, come back home right now!” Fu Laoye shouted angrily.
Just as he was about to decline, Fu Laoye’s voice yelled again. “What’s wrong? Now that you have successfully pushed Shen Qieyi away, am I next?”
Fu Yao stood rooted to the spot, feeling his mouth dry up.
As he arrived at the house, Fu Yao walked in quietly.
Fu Laoye was sitting on the main seat in the hall. He skimmed through the pages in his hand with his eyes half-squinted.
Fu Laoye felt movement by the door but kept his attention on the pages ignoring Fu Yao.
“Grandpa, I’m back.” Fu Yao stood straight right in front of him. He didn’t show even the slightest of his pain
Even though Fu Laoye did not have the best sight or smell, he could tell that Fu Yao reeked of smoke and alcohol.
Initially, Fu Laoye planned to have a proper conversation with him. However, seeing Fu Yao come home in such a state, exactly like someone who had been fooling around, made him even more furious.
Fu Yao stood rooted for a while, slightly swaying back and forth. It was impossible for him to ignore Fu Laoye’s obvious rage. Both of them confronted each other in silence.
It had been thirty minutes since Fu Yao came in.
Fu Yao was the first to surrender. “I’m sorry I did not talk to you about the divorce.”
Hearing this, Grandpa immediately threw the album in his hand into Fu Yao’s arms. Fu Yao tried to catch it but failed, and the album fell just right about his feet.
Fu Yao bent down to pick up the album holding his wound. He tried to hold back the urge to utter a sound in pain.
The album was a scrapbook journal of his growing by his grandma. He thought back to when Fu Laoye was so absorbent in it earlier, and his heart softened,
“Grandpa, I’m sorry, I know…” Fu Yao continued.
Fu Laoye interrupted with his deep voice, “I’m sorry? Who am I to accept your apology? You have grown so much that it is no longer my place to say anything to you.”
Fu Yao couldn’t bear his grandpa’s mockery. All he could do now was suppress his anger and keep quiet.
The room went still for a moment.
Fu Laoye had always been bad-tempered. Even though Fu Yao rarely looked timid as he was now, Fu Laoye still wasn’t satisfied and looked at him like an eyesore.
“Hmph! I could never understand you. I knew your marriage failure was not because of you two.”
“How is Shen Qieyi? Did she insist on backing out empty-handedly from the divorce? Where is she now? Do you know?” He truly cared about Shen Qieyi and was angry about the decision to divorce.
Fu Yao thought of the divorce agreement. Shen Qieyi must have been busy preparing it. However, she eventually decided to back out from the marriage empty-handedly. How foolish of her.
“After she moved out, she lived in Mellow Garden. I think she might live better now.”
The image of Shen Qieyi confronting a group of men this morning made him stop his words.
Fu Laoye muttered in a low voice, “It’s our fault. Give me her address. When I have the time, I’ll visit her in person and apologize.”
Fu Yao kept his silent.
Fu Laoye’s grey hair and wrinkled face made him look exceptionally frail. “Help me to my room for rest. I’m tired.”
Fu Yao quickly stepped forward and bent slightly to help him up. “Please move slowly.”
Fu Laoye held the stair handle on one side and gave Fu Yao a side-eye. “There is something that I will only say once.”
He stopped and looked at his grandfather earnestly. “Pray tell.”
“I won’t interfere in any romance affairs of yours. You are free to do whatever you want, but Shen Qieyi will always be my one and only granddaughter-in-law”.”
Fu Yao was stunned, but he had no way he could agree with him.
“Grandpa, I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed.” He said truthfully. Hearing that, Fu Laoye gave him a firm punch.
The next day, as just dawn arrived, Shen Qieyi went out earlier than usual. She strolled around the pet market, then to the supermarket, and brought back loads of goods.
As soon as she took out the key and was about to open the door, she heard a peal of joyful laughter come from the neighbor’s house across her. She stopped for a second and then walked into her door.
After unpacking everything, she picked up a bouquet and walked to the balcony. After neatening the flowers in her hand, she knocked on the door of Mr. Chen’s house.
“Coming!” After a few seconds of silence, she heard a response from inside the house.
Shen Qieyi waited patiently and stretched her hand to wipe off the dewdrops on the petals.
The door creaked open. It was Mr. Chen at the door holding Chen Ying in his arms.
“Sister!” The kid’s eyes lit up when she saw Shen Qieyi.
Mr. Chen glanced at his daughter, smiled, and nodded to Shen Qieyi.
Shen Qieyi handed the bouquet to Chen Ying. “Do you like it?”
Chen Ying held the bouquet in her arm before she floundered toward Shen Qieyi.
She understood what Chen Ying meant and leaned over toward her.
The child gave Shen Qieyi a big kiss on her cheek and made her happy.
