“They are all red, why do you need to look so hard for?” Ace asked annoyed as he watched Penelope staring with a her concentration poured on finding the perfect tomatoes.
“You wouldn’t understand.” She rolled her eyes as she stood up and grabbed four more tomatoes and tossed them into the basket he was holding out for her. “It’s a cooking thing.”
“Oh, a cooking thing.” He clicked his tongue and cringed as she grabbed his wrist and pulled him towards another stand of vegetables. “Your pack doesn’t sell these things?”
“No. We work together and there is no reason to do it.” She shrugged her shoulders and smiled at the woman behind the stand.
“So they stand here all day just watching vegetables?” Ace asked in confusion as he watched her pick out the lettuce. “Why not just distribute the vegetables.” He pointed out and Penelope stood up instantly and glanced at him in shock. Her bright brown eyes stared right up at him, getting him to feel slightly uncomfortable.
“Not only are you cute, you’re smart too!?” She giggled out as she clasped her hands together in admiration. “Wow. Like a baby born with the brains-.”
“Hey, I told you not to call me that. Please.” He growled as he stared sharply at her, getting her to tilt her head slightly to the side as she smiled out cheekily. “I’m serious. Don’t let the others hear you.”
“Oh no they won’t.” She winked and chuckled out as she turned to the stand and grabbed the fresh lettuce before dropping it into the basket. “There, we have everything-.”
“Meat.” He corrected as he held out the basket. “There I literally no meat in here.”
“The kitchen pantry has been back in the mansion.” She chuckled as she began to walk away.
“I thought we were cooking at my place?” He asked as he followed behind her, slowly catching up to her.
“Your place doesn’t have any meat.”
“We could get some along the way.”
“Fine.” She sighed out as she turned to face him with a rather seriously gaze. “I just don’t trust you. That’s it.”
“Makes sense.” He nodded and she smiled out and turned away from him, continuing to walk towards the mansion. “Afraid I would kill you?”
“No.” She shrugged her shoulders and sighed out slowly. “You’re not my gender.”
“Wow.” He laughed out as she chuckled and glanced around herself. “I’m sorry to burst your bubble, but you’re not as attractive as you think you are. I’m not in the slightest attracted to you.”
“Ouch.” She smirked as she glanced up at him and nodded. “Well, that’s one thing. I feel less scared now.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me.” He rolled his eyes. “Did you honestly think I would trap you in my house and take advantage of you?”
“Mmh. Yeah.” She nodded and hardly spared him a glance.
Ace furrowed his brows as he stared at her back while she walked ahead seeming distant one more like she was back at the river spot.
He took in a sharp breath and sighed out as he glanced down at the vegetables, staring at how perfectly colored the vegetables she picked were. He had to admit, she was good at picking the vegetables.
“What’s wrong?” He asked, only to feel her tense up and turn sharply with a small smile. She chuckled a little as she clasped her hands together.
“What do you mean?” She asked with a soft tone and raised her brows in question. “I’m completely fine.”
“Okay.” He nodded, knowing too well she wasn’t going to say anything. “But it kind of annoys me when you pretend to be okay.” He said, knowing too well he still had to say it. “You helped me at least let me help you.”
“I’m hungry. Help me make lunch okay?” She winked and turned away from him, skipping towards the mansion.
Ace pressed his lips together as he followed slowly. Now very sure she wasn’t going to tell him anything. She wasn’t going to tell him any part of her life. About the boy she was secretly seeing. The boy that tried to kill her despite being loved by someone like her.
Ace didn’t want to force her to tell the truth about everything she has gone through, after all, she doesn’t really trust him as much as he trusted her the instant she helped him with his broken love life with his sister and his past all together. He didn’t want to admit but Penelope was the closest thing to an actual friend he can recall having. She doesn’t seem to be having another motive for helping him and sticking around him, she doesn’t seem to be trying to get him to say something she wants to know. All she thought about was the present and what they were doing at that moment.
Despite just getting to talk to her that same morning, he felt like he had been talking to her ever since he met her as Hope’s boyfriend and hardly talking to her, except about how he was in the way of Hope being with Harley.
“Hey.” He called as he rushed up to her the moment she moment the doors of the mansion, stepping into the large corridor that branched to countless rooms. “Did you notice, all we ever talked about was how I was getting in your way of matching her up with Harley?”
“Yes. And I was serious about it.” She rolled her eyes with a chuckle as she glanced over her shoulder to meet his gaze. “That was a perfect match for me. I worked hard for it and spent years trying to perfect I and suddenly you appear with your handsome face and tear up my plans.”
“Oh, so you think I’m attractive? I should actually be the one insecure being in the same room with you.” He laughed out as she opened the doors to the vacant kitchen , since it was way past lunch time.
“I only said your face was handsome. Don’t praise yourself so much. You’re not as attractive as you think.” She rolled her eyes playfully and he smirked out as he placed the basket onto the counter.
“Giving me a taste of my own medicine?” He asked and she nodded with a wink as she stared at him.
