Breakfast didn’t seem to go as planned for everyone. There was more silence than there was at a graveyard with was hardly comfortable.
“Okay, these are the seats we preserved for you.” Jason smiled as he waved over to the seats facing the field where the competition would happen. “This is the best spot in the competition. Plus, you won’t even be blocked by the noisy could, they really do scream a lot so I hope you don’t mind.”
“My pack greats louder than most.” Hope chuckled out as she glanced towards Jason who smiled at her and nodded his head in approval.
“well then you won’t have much of a problem.” He chuckled before sighing out nervously as he glanced over the shoulder to the field where the contestants were already prepping themselves. “well, enjoy the competition and… uh… wish me luck.” He shrugged his shoulders, getting everyone’s eyes to widen in shock, apart from Kelvin who smiled slightly.
“are you competing?” Hope asked with wide excited eyes as she stared at him joyfully. “that’s amazing! Watching a beta upgrade to an alpha.” Hope smiled brightly.
“Thanks you.” Jason chuckled before sighing out once more. “now, if you will excuse me… I need to go.” He waved before sprinting off to where the other contestants were.
Emily stood staring as he rushed off with her heart pounding into her ears ever so loudly. Getting her knees to wobble a bit from the anxious feeling in her stomach.
“Are you okay?” Anna asked as she noticed Emily holding onto the seat with a slightly shaky hand.
“I’m alright.” She smiled slightly as she let go of the seat and ran a hand through her hair.
“you’re pregnant, aren’t you?” Anna whispered with a chuckle as she watched Emily glance at her in shock.
“how did you know that?” Emily furrowed her brows as Anna chuckled out and smiled innocently.
“when you were watching Jason walk away, I noticed you place your have over your stomach, it’s an unconscious thing the women from my pack do every time they see their husbands whenever they are pregnant. So since you just asked how I knew that, then it has to be true.” She chuckled out, getting Emily to sigh out as glance down at her stomach as she placed her hand over it, stroking it lightly.
“I am.” She said with a smile as she glanced back at him.
“It’s Jason’s, isn’t it?” Anna asked with a slight frown as Emily frowned completely and glanced over to the field where he stood from a distance. “does Kelvin know?”
“He does. But don’t tell anyone about it.” Emily whined as she placed a finger on her lips to indicate silence. “they will freak out.”
“so he accepted it… even though it wasn’t his?” Anna asked curiosity as Emily nodded in agreement.
“He only did so just so he could help me and Jason out.” She shrugged her shoulders with a weak smile ass he felt guilty crawl into her stomach. “he got upset at first, because he fell out of love with me and wanted to find someone who would love him back. So when he accepted that he would take responsibility… I felt bad for treating him the way I did.”
“wow… he sounds like an amazing person…” Anna smiled slightly as she glanced towards Kelvin who was talking to Harley animatedly. “does he like someone?”
“he hasn’t been in the pack for long, so no. He doesn’t have anyone of interest.” Emily shrugged, only to pause when she noticed Anna staring at Kelvin with wide eyes full of admiration. “do you like him?”
“me!?” Anna asked in a gasp as she shifted her eyes towards Emily with warming cheeks. “n-no!”
“Yes you are!” Emily chuckled out with a smile. “I know that face. But… aren’t you Harley’s mate?”
“he uh… he lied.” Anna frowned as she glanced towards the ground. “he loves Hope, apparently…” she cleared her throat as she pointed with her eyes towards Hope. Emily shifted her gaze to Hope who was now sitting by the seats Jason had shown them.
“I thought Hope loved Ace?” Emily asked in confusion and Anna shrugged her shoulders as she glanced at Emily.
“I thought so too.” Anna sighed out. “but they were…. Making out, this morning… I found them.”
“Well that’s really surprising.” Emily chuckled, only to frown when she noticed Anna’s sad gaze. “how long were you and Harley together for?”
“Uh…” Anna chuckled nervously as she scratched the back of her head. “two days ago, actually.”
“oh.” Emily nodded as she glanced elsewhere. “okay.” She nodded as the horn finally blew into the open air, clearly indicating that the ceremony was about to commence. “that’s the horn. We have to get seated.” Emily smiled at Anna who nodded as they walked to their seats.
Harley sat in between Hope and Kelvin. Emily sat beside Kelvin and Anna sat right after her as the other pack members gathered around. Others sat down and others simply wanted to stand to see and feel the action better off than those sitting.
Emily furrowed her brows at Kelvin so was still sitting down instead of heading off to the field to battle off for the alpha’s spot. She reached out her arm and nagged his shoulder, getting his attention.
“aren’t you supposed to be competing?” she asked in a hushed whispers as she pointed towards the field.
“no.” he shrugged his shoulders as he stared down at Emily. “I already trained enough for it but Jason was still too strong for me. We had a spar and he ended up winning. I surpassed most of the men my age and the army commander just clarified, painfully that I’m only going to get the beta position if Jason competes. So that’s why he has to win and I’ll become alpha.”
“You had a spar?” Emily asked with furrowed brows as Kelvin nodded his head in agreement. “so Jason has to win?”
“yeah.” He nodded. “you’ll become a beta’s wife. Since I can’t be the alpha.”
“oh.” Emily nodded slowly before leaning back on her seat. “right…”
Ace, who was sitting on the last seat and next to Hope couldn’t help but notice how awfully close Hope and Harley suddenly became. Of course they weren’t talking to each other but they seemed to stand and sit closely to each other since this morning. It was just odd that they were on bad sides of each other the previous day and are now glued to each other today.
He reached his hand over to hers that she placed on her lap and took her hand in his, lacing his fingers with hers as a smile spread across his face when she glanced up to meet him eyes.
