Chapter 1736 Urgency

Book:That Stranger Lying Beside Me Published:2024-6-1

Richard only realized that Abbie wasn’t around when he returned home. Meanwhile, his parents and Leonard were waiting for him in the living room.
When Leonard saw that Richard had returned, he stood up politely and greeted him. Richard sat down and said, “Mr. Floyd, you don’t have to be so polite. My family doesn’t have so many formalities, so please sit down!”
Leonard sat down with a smile. “I came here today because I have something very important to tell you.”
Richard looked at Leonard lazily while Donald and Helen waited for him to continue. Leonard coughed dryly and said, “Uncle, Auntie, I didn’t mean to hide this matter from you, but I had no choice but to do so. I’m asking for your forgiveness before I talk about this matter.”
“Mr. Floyd, please get straight to the point and stop beating around the bush.” Richard was impatient.
“Fine, then I’ll just be straightforward. This has something to do with Abbie and the child. Actually, Emma isn’t my child.”
Richard let out a soft murmur as he thought to himself. Since that b*stard wants to talk about this, he didn’t have to worry about it anymore and it’d be best if Leonard told the truth on his own accord.
He put on a look of surprise as he pondered secretly, “Are you joking? If Emma isn’t your child, then who does she belong to? What are you trying to do by lying to us?”
Leonard had predicted Richard’s reaction, so he sighed and said, “I really don’t have any bad intentions and Abbie was the one that wanted to keep the child’s identity a secret. This is because Emma is Abbie’s daughter.”
Helen exclaimed, “How is that even possible?!”
Donald’s face also changed. If the child was Abbie’s, then the only possibility was that Michael was the father. Since this was the case, it was clear why Wayne had apologized to them.
There was an apologetic expression on Leonard’s face. “I didn’t know that she was pregnant when I saved her. She was in a coma for a long time, and only later did I know that she was pregnant. She loves her child very much, but she was worried that you wouldn’t like Emma when I brought her back to the country. In order not to burden Abbie and cause you any trouble, we decided to tell you that Emma is my child.”
Helen’s expression was extremely grim. Emma was Abbie’s daughter, but she had always treated her as Leonard’s child and she had never hugged Emma.
Although Michael was Emma’s father, she was still Helen’s granddaughter. How could a grandmother treat her granddaughter like this?
Helen felt as though her heart had been broken into pieces when she thought about how Emma had suffered after she stayed in the Clark family.
Leonard saw that Helen’s expression had changed and he thought that she was unhappy. “Auntie, Abbie didn’t mean to hide it and I didn’t help her on purpose. I just wanted everyone to feel better, so it’s my fault.”
“If that’s the case, why are you telling us this?” Donald also felt uncomfortable. Leonard must have a motive for telling the truth behind Abbie’s back, so Donald asked, “Why didn’t you hide it to the end?”
“I wanted to do that at first, but there are two reasons why I decided to expose the truth. The first is that I don’t think both of you like me very much. You think that I don’t deserve to be with Abbie because I have a child. You’re afraid that Abbie will suffer if she’s with me, and I don’t want both of you to be worried.”
He sounded as if he was doing a noble cause, which made Richard smile mockingly. Leonard then continued, “The second reason is because of the Davis family.”
“What about them?”
“When I heard that Wayne and Meadow had come to apologize, I felt that they had some sort of hidden purpose. Emma and Abbie look alike, so I’m guessing that the Davis family must’ve guessed Emma’s identity. Since they’re so attentive, they must be trying to take Emma away. Abbie loves her daughter immensely, so she definitely won’t allow her to be taken away. This is why I have no choice but to tell you the truth. I hope that you can make sure that Emma will be by Abbie’s side and no one will be able to take her away!”
Richard didn’t say anything and Donald also had a thoughtful look on his face. After that, Helen looked at her husband and then at her son. “Since she is Abbie’s daughter, why would the Davis family try to take her away? Where did they get the guts to do that?”
“Michael is a renowned lawyer and he has won countless court cases. I am afraid that he’ll mercilessly fight with Abbie in court over Emma’s custody.”
“How dare he!” Helen said angrily, “We’re not that easy to deal with. If Michael wants to go against us, he has to think twice.”
“I know that your family is very powerful, but back then… all of you fell apart when the accident happened. I’ve always felt that Michael is up to no good, so we have to think of a way in order not to let such a thing happen again.”
When Leonard mentioned the matter when Abbie had been harmed by Azalea, Helen became even angrier. She said to Richard and Donald, “Why aren’t both of you saying anything? Do you want the Davis family to take Abbie’s daughter away and let them do as they please?”
“Mom, nothing has happened yet, so why are you in such a hurry?” Richard said.
“We have to take precautions, right? It’ll be too late if we wait until something happens. Michael is not a good person, and neither is Wayne or Meadow. Anyway, the Davis family is rotten to the core and I will never let them take away my grandchild!”
Richard said lightly, “Don’t worry, no one can take her away!”
He then turned to Leonard and said, “Thank you very much for saving my sister, Mr. Floyd. We will never forget about your kind favour.”
Leonard immediately said, “It’s just a piece of cake, so you don’t have to thank me. I still have something else to tell you today. I’d better marry her as soon as possible to prevent the Davis family from causing trouble again. This way, there’s no reason for them to do anything.”
Richard rubbed his chin. “There’s no problem with that, but there’s something I need to remind you of. Do you still remember my conditions when you proposed to Abbie?”
“Yes, I do!” Leonard nodded.
“Let me remind you again.  We don’t expect Abbie’s husband to be rich or talented. We only hope that the man she marries will be loyal to her and he’ll treat her well. We won’t accept anyone that has illegitimate children or mistresses. Mr. Floyd, are you sure that you can meet such conditions?”
“Yes!” Leonard was certain that he did not have any scandals, nor did he have any affairs with other women, so he answered firmly.
“Well, I won’t object to your marriage since you can meet this condition, nor will my parents.”
Donald and Helen wanted to speak when they heard this, but Richard stopped them with a look. “Let’s wrap this up today. I’m going to discuss with my parents about Emma, so please leave. By the way, please find a highly respected person to formally propose your marriage to Abbie if you’re sure that your record is clean.”
