Chapter 871 From Abroad

Book:That Stranger Lying Beside Me Published:2024-6-1

William was aware that Thomas had been carrying the Saunders family’s DNA in his body. Hence, he had long speculated that Thomas was not part of the Gurney family. He was not taken aback by Silas’ findings and asked, “Did you manage to get ahold of how he was being adopted?”
“Unfortunately, no. He was not adopted locally but was instead brought back from abroad. I was told that he was an abandoned child. The president of the Gurney family went abroad for official matters and brought his butler alongside him. The butler coincidently saw Thomas, who was a baby who got abandoned. He decided to take him in as he felt pitiful towards Thomas and had no children with him as well. However, he was very secretive about this as rumors claimed that Thomas was his child that was born out of wedlock. I had spent a great amount of effort to obtain this piece of information.”
“Really?” William thought for a moment and said, “Alright then. However, let’s put this matter aside for the time being as Abbie is now your main focus. She’s feeling moody and is currently hanging out with Thomas. You shall be assigned to become her bodyguard for now. Remember, she is not allowed to have a hint of injury at all.”
It was impossible for Silas to not know what he meant as he had been servicing William for many years. He immediately agreed, “Mr. Howard, you need not worry at all! I will keep a close distance with Miss Clark and her safeness is being guaranteed by me.”
Valeria had heard the conversation clearly between them. She swiftly grabbed William’s phone away from him when he hung up the phone call.
William grinned while shaking his head and said, “Honey, don’t you think it’s an unwise choice to take my phone away? You would affect my work performance as this phone is for official matters.”
“It’s okay as I would not disrupt your work progress. I promise to return the phone back to you whenever it relates to your official matters!”
The phone suddenly rang just when Valeria finished speaking. She obediently handed the phone to him as it was from Marcus. William raised his eyebrows towards her and answered the call. Marcus reported, “Mr. Howard, I’ve already arranged for someone to send over Talitha’s bloody video. We would receive an update about the aftermath real soon.”
“What? I did not expect you guys to be so quick on your feet as I initially prepared to delay things for a bit. However, let’s not make a fuss about it since you have already sent the footage over.”
Marcus was stunned for a moment upon hearing about William’s plan and asked,  “Would I mess things up?”
“I have no idea but let’s not worry about it. We shall now see how it goes.”
Marcus sensed that he had ruined William’s agenda due to his rash decision. However, there was no use crying over spilled milk. He replied, “Mr. Howard, I would like to report an additional matter to you. Lucian is finally back!”
William was not bothered by it at all and said, “Alright. Just instruct someone to keep an eye on her shall do. She has no power to cause a scene.”
Braelynn took a day off to rest at Natalie’s villa after being attacked just now. She felt uneasy for doing nothing and had been busy going through some business documents in the study room. She glanced at the surveillance camera screen upon hearing a doorbell alarm.
Lucian was the one who pressed on the doorbell. She had disappeared and claimed to be traveling abroad ever since Devon was caught in a mess.
Everyone knew that it was an excuse and she was hiding instead to come up with a plan.
Braelynn frowned upon seeing Lucian making an unexpected visit. She felt a ride of mixed emotions as she viewed Lucian as her mother for more than twenty years. Lucian had nevertheless brought her up despite how cunning of a person she was.
Braelynn pressed the remote control switch to open the door. Lucian marched forward with fruits in her hand.
She looked around Natalie’s home while making her way towards the living room. She felt a sense of familiarity as she used to be a regular visitor.
The majority portion of flowers in the yard was planted alongside Natalie. Lucian used to think that she could spend the rest of her life residing here with Natalie. However, it was evident that she was not fated to be with Natalie.
She felt a sense of despair upon thinking about the good old days. She composed herself and entered the living room while Braelynn came down from upstairs.
Lucian asked with a worried expression on her face, “Braelynn, are you alright?”
“Mummy, when did you come back from abroad? Why didn’t you call me beforehand?”
“I just arrived today and received news that you were injured. I came over swiftly as I was worried about you.” Lucian placed the fruit on the coffee table and continued, “Let me have a look at your wound!”
“Don’t worry as it’s not a big deal.” Braelynn did not want to make a fuss and pointed to the sofa, “Mummy, do have a seat. I shall make you a cup of tea.”
“It’s fine as I’m not feeling thirsty at all.” Lucian refused and questioned, “Who did this to you?”
“I have no idea. They escaped after realizing that their plan had failed. Father, President Saunders, and President Garcia have already arranged for someone to seek things out. However, I have yet to receive any updates from them.”
“You are gentle and not one who simply offends others. Something fishy must be going on. Have you got yourself involved in other matters?”
Lucian meant something else but Braelynn chose to play dumb and asked, “Mummy, what are you talking about?”
“Well, Mrs. Howard may have dragged you into this mess. You may have been attacked as someone is holding a grudge against her, right?”
Lucian was an utterly intelligent person. Her speculation was accurate as Valeria was indeed related to this incident. Braelynn shook her head and said, “I did not dwell too much on it but we would eventually know about the truth soon.”
Lucian changed the topic upon seeing Braelynn had no further comments about the incident, “How’s President Garcia doing nowadays?”
“Very good!” Braelynn’s reply was concise.
Lucian wanted to ask more about Natalie’s situation. However, she changed her mind upon seeing Braelynn not interested in this topic.
Lucian eventually excused herself after chatting with Braelynn for a while. She was lost in her thoughts upon making her way back home. There were no updates about Devon ever since the scandal broke out. Raelyn and her twin daughters were experiencing waves of hardship. Hardy was also being caught in a mess. Hence, Lucian decided to lay low as it was not a good time to act.
She needed to hang in there as she had been holding up for so many years. However, it was a challenge to cause a scene as she was all alone in her team.
Lucian’s phone suddenly rang when she was struggling to come up with something. She glanced at her phone and realized that It was an unknown number. She rejected the call as she assumed that it was a spam call.
The same number had called her once again. She frowned and eventually answered, “Hello?”
“Miss Barnbook, how have you been?” The man said with a sneer.
“Who are you?” Lucian asked as she wondered who the caller was.
“Miss Barnbook, you are indeed a busy person! I did not expect you to forget about me so soon. Well then, I shall introduce myself once again! My name is Gurmisran Knight. Miss Barnbook, does my name rings a bell to you?”
Lucian was stunned. Gurmisran had called her! What was his motive for calling her out of the blue?
“Mr. Knight, it’s you! To what do I owe this pleasure?”
“I just suddenly thought about you as we have been partners about twenty over years ago. Miss Barnbook, don’t you want to reminiscence the good old days with me?”
Lucian was feeling displeased and replied, “Mr. Knight, we have made a promise to cut ties with each other. Have you forgotten about it?”
“You’re right, we did agree to that years ago. However, nothing lasts forever. Don’t you think so?”
Lucian interrupted him without hesitation, “I am not one who dwells into the past! Mr. Knight, I hope that you would honor the promise that we had made with each other!”
Gurmisran sneered and said, “Miss Barnbook, are you sure about it? Could you be confident that you would no longer require a helping hand forever? One would not act so rashly, don’t you think? It’s wise for you to be flexible as things aren’t going so well for you nowadays.”
Lucian was speechless as he had a solid point. Gurmisran continued with a stern voice,
“Miss Barnbook, I would like to have a word with you. Let’s free up our schedule to meet with each other soon!”
